Out of Print List

I am looking for a list of DVD's that are out of print. I was alerted by a friend to the whole Silence of the Lambs thing, right after I had seen a copy for sale somewhere. I got back and it was still there, yeah! But I don't want to miss another movie because I wasn't informed. Help.

What "Silence of the Lambs thing" are you talking about? Which version is out of print? Cause I saw a plain looking version at the store that was labeled "Out of Print". Should I have gotten it?

The Criterion version is OOP along with the original Orion release (which has a snapper case, compared to the keeper with the other two versions). The MGM version that came out in August (which can be seen in my DVD Profiler if you want to know what it looks like) is basically the same as the Criterion.

Nope, it isn't the same as the Criterion at all. The Criterion has a wicked commentary, one of the best IMO, and has completely different extras, a different transfer, and the original 2.0 audio. The MGM SE, which I have since it looks better, is misframed at 1.78:1 (where as the Criterion is 1.85:1) and contains a documentary, a better transfer, and a 5.1 remix. All in all unless you have to own every single Criterion ever the MGM SE is a very very good disc. Get that and another dvd instead of just the Criterion.

edit -
adding to Stu's list:
- Charade Criterion
- Jerry Maguire (I think)
- The Unbearabe Likeness of Being Criterion
- First Printing of Seven Samurai Crition with restoration feature
- Sid & Nancy Criterion

There was quite a large discussion back in August when the MGM version came out about the difference between the two. Someone mentioned them being almost identical...

I don't own the Cirterion, so you're probably right Snake.

It is not the same! The MGM disc does not contain the commentary track. The Criterion version is not in 5.1 or anamorphic. The Criterion is still preferred by most collector's because of the quality of the extras.

Add to OOP list:
Bull Durham - Orion
Dances With Wolves - Orion

The only extra on these are a commentary. MGM now owns both of these titles and I think SE are in the making for both. Unless they licence the commentary rights, which is unlikely, the commentaries will not be included in any SE. Maybe they will redo the commentary?

Speaking of The Silence of the Lambs, I've noticed that most of the copies of the MGM discs on the shelves now say "1.85:1" on the back. I haven't seen the transfer yet, but I guess it could have either been fixed, or it may have been a simple misprint on the first runs that's now been corrected.

It might be 1.85:1, I have watched both version and the MGM SE looked a little wider. It's a matter of a difference of 0.07:1 though. Not much to notice... and the Criterion extras are not that much better. I have the commentary ripped to my computer so if I ever want to listen to it I just line up the audio, and the documentary on the SE is way better then the text stuff on the Criterion.

Re

I just got my Criterion of Silence last week.

I was in a Suncoast, and they had about a million copies of the MGM Silence. I flipped through them all and saw a Criterion marked as 24.99 with all the others. There was only one Criterion, it was brand new, did I get a good deal? or can this be had cheaper?

I got the Criterion because one day, it will be worth big bucks and really really hard to find. Where as i've seen the MGM one used for about 12 bucks.

How much is the Criterion of SOTL worth? Thanks for any info.

You'd get about $30 for it on eBay.

It isn't worth that much unless it is still factory sealed. I seriuosly doubt it will ever be worth big bucks since the Criterion version was one of their top sellers (if not the best) so there are LOTS of copies floating around out there.
