Canadian DVD's

Last month I bought the Canadian version of Trainspotting for the extras that the US version didn't have. I also just saw a post about Pulp Fiction that said the Canadian version had more extras also. Are there any more movies that have better Canadian versions or that just aren't available in the US? thankx

I remember hearing that the Canadian version of "Memento" is different somehow than the U.S. version. I've always wondered what the differences were.

Anyone?

The Canadian version of Memento, which I have being in Canada, isn't as good as the US version. It doesn't include any of the extras, and only includes a hackney backwards versio. It's somewhat neat, but I hope a true SE gets released someday.

According to an eBay contact I have, the following Canadian DVD's have more and/or better features than their US couterparts:

Sliding Doors
Trainspotting
Pulp Fiction
Red Violin
Good Will Hunting
ExistenZ

The Red Violin is much worse. It is pan and scan and 2.0 stereo in Canada. Very dissapointing for a Canadian film too.

Re: O! Canada!

Six volumes of Hal Roach's uncut, remastered Little Rascals shorts circa 1929-1938 are available in Canada; only the first volume is available in the U.S.

I've heard that GINGER SNAPS has a lot more on it than the US version...don't know for sure tho. Didn't like that flick enough to pick it up.

Are these volumes the ones released by Cabin Fever Entertainment? If so, I can say that they can be found many places, cheap. I first found them, of all places at my local supermarket, a Pathmark. They have an audio and video section. Some of the video titles are the current children's releases, but most of the stuff, both audio and video, are public domain titles or cheapie music collections by a third party distributor. In between various bare bones Jackie Chan DVDs (that are transfers from a poor VHS source), and crappy public domain titles were these Our Gang/Little Rascals discs. The market was selling them for only $7.99, and I had a coupon making them $5.99! I own four of them. Another plus: When they were released on VHS, each volume of Little Rascals had about 80 minutes of material. Each DVD consists of TWO volumes, so we're talking 2 1/2 hours-plus of material for a low price.

Since then, a local A/V chain, CD world (I think they're just a Jersey chain, 4 or 5 stores) started carrying these titles, as well as other Canadian imports. They're still reasonable, 10 dollars or less. They won't sell any Canadian version of a title available in the US, and some of the Canadian titles are the more simple releases. I almost bought Heavenly Creatures till I realized it was full-frame (if anyone knows that this is an open matte, let me know, and I might still pick it up), and the original 2-channel stereo track (also in francais).

Laughing Gravy, if you weren't talking about the Little Rascals shorts released by Cabin Fever Entertainment, I'd suggest you try to pick them up anyway. They did a great job cleaning them up about 10-12 years ago. No lame attempt at a 5.1 soundtrack, just a real-spruced up picture, and a price that's phenomenal. I've seen other releases of Our Gang/Little Racscals, and they don't compare to the Cabin Fever discs, IMO.

If you liked Ginger Snaps the Canadian version is the one to get.

The Canadian release of GINGER SNAPS is presented in its OAR of 1.85:1 anamorphic as opposed to the US release which is P & S and devoid of supplemental material.

some (initial?) copies of trainspotting had a 'CD side' of train sounds on the flip. unfortunately, the only thing on my flipside is a label. what was different on the sliding doors disc?

red violin: as solidsnake posted, its in pan and scan, 2.0. the universal US release was widescreen anamorphic and included at DTS soundtrack i believe. good will hunting: i went through three copies of this before getting a refund. a friend of mine went through two as well. so, you've been warned.

Has anybody bought "Cube" in the US? The Canadian version is BB but the US version has a commentary and deleted scenes etc. The film is Canadian! It was funded by Norman Jewison's film school in Toronto. Now I have to order it from the US . That pisses me off. Its Trimark in the US and Alliance Atlantis in Canada I think.

We also have Heavenly Creatures up here, it hasn't even been released in the US. It's a pretty shitty DVD though, but I got it for $6CND.
