American Pie 2: Half-baked transfer

Why did Universal try to jam so much onto a single disc? The trailer for "The Bourne Identity" looks better than the feature. This should have been spread over 2 discs with all the audio tracks. (Like Universal did with Cape Fear). This image is not terrible, but it is really dark making it look like your watching something through a neutral density filter.

I was disappointed to see this. The bonus features and all are nice, but I think Universal has dropped the ball this time and sacrificed transfer quality. I was surprised. Picked up Tron also, and that transfer completely blows AP2 away.

Surprising also because THE FAST & THE FURIOUS looked so good. I'm pretty forgiving with transfers, but I thought something was off on my calibration until I popped in Tron. I read a review at DVDtalk just a minute ago, and it says the same thing. Too much! This disc is like the anti-superbit.

Anyone else find this?

Here's Dan Ramer's comments from DVD File:

The film's theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1 is presented in anamorphic video. I'm pleased to report that edge halos are rare and not at all intrusive. Small object detail is excellent; the little numerals on Jim's home are clearly readable in a wide shot. Colors are rich and nicely saturated. Chroma noise and smearing are totally absent. Contrast and brightness track well throughout the full video dynamic range. Shadow detail during dark scenes, like when Jim and Michelle meet secretly at band camp, is commendable. Compression artifacts like blocking and mosquito noise are not visible. The overall effect is very film-like, and that's what I most want in my DVDs.

Re

I picked this up today. Yes, I agree, this should have been 2 discs, but I really found nothing wrong with the picture. What I did have a problem with were the menus, so annoying the way they did the main menu....

By the way, with 4 audio commentaries, making of, DTS, and a bunch of other stuff, I doubt there will be an Ultimate Edition for a really long time.

Also, the only thing space issues wuold cause is compression artifacts. The colors and brightness is all about the transfer itself, for the most part.

The first movie didn't have the best transfer either. Their still basically well marketed low budget teen movies.

I just got through watching AP2 and I too noticed that the colors seemed a bit oversaturated and the picture was a little dark in some scenes.

Also, can somebody tell what was so unrated about the "unrated version". It looked like the SAME version that I saw in theaters. Maybe I'm missing something?

Chris, thanks for agreeing with me. There have been reports on other sites, but none here. There is something up with this transfer. I watched TOMBSTONE right after it, and the difference was staggering. American Pie 2 actually made me check my calbration. Disappointing.

I can't really pinpoint anything different than theatres. I think some of the raunchier scenes may have a few extra seconds, but damn if I can find them. Same thing was up with the original.

I noticed the same thing. And besides the weak transfer, somebody freakin tell me why I saw a couple of deleted scenes on some damn entertainment news show that were not on the @#$(* disc!??? This collector's edition, then a few months later the real ultimate editions comes out - is crap. If they start working on the damn dvd as soon as the movie is completed, they maybe could do it right the first time. But, who am I kidding, where's the repeat buys in that???

I found it to be a litte dark in some scenes as well. One that comes to mind is when the guys were sitting on the curb talking about moving to the beach. That scene seemed a bit dark and grainy. Maybe that goes hand in hand?
