Alien & Aliens - Theatrical Version?
Does Fox have any plans to release Alien and Aliens DVDs with the theatrical cut of the movies? I'm not fond of some of the added scenes and I'd like to see discs with the option of playing the original or recut versions. Unfortunately, the current discs only have the rejiggered movies.

Well, maybe if they do an Aliens 5 Star Collection like they're doing with Alien, they'll do the seamless branching deal. Or have both versions like The Abyss. I doubt it though.
And like Dehrian said, I think the version of Alien is the theatrical version. It has instead deleted scenes that weren't added into the movie.

My mistake about deleted scenes added to Alien. I am glad to hear that a REALLY special edition of Alien is coming out. Maybe there's hope for Aliens; it's not like Cameron doesn't know how to do it, he gave us three different versions of Terminator 2.
As for "rejiggered," I'm happy to have expanded porkchop's vocabulary. :-) |

I actually prefer the extended version of Aliens, mostly because it explains exactly how the Aliens were discovered and how Burke ordered them to investigate. Clears up some of the confusion.

I preferred the extended version of Aliens as well. It also adds more punch and meaning to the Ripley/Newt relationship. The sequence where Newt and her parents and brother go to the alien spaceship DOES explain things more clearly, but its not the greatest stuff in the world. I'll let it slide though. At least now we know what to call the colony. Hadley's Hope.
As for the Deleted Scenes in Alien, I really enjoyed them, and felt that the vast majority of them would have added to the film if put back in via seemless branching. |

I think the original, theatrical version of Aliens is a better film. The pacing of all the action is screwed up in the extended director's cut.
however, It was interesting to see that added footage. I'm just glad I have my Laserdiscs of the series as well as the DVDs so I can choose. ![]()

I prefer the extended cut of Aliens, for reasons stated above. However I can certainly understand the want of some people to have the original version.
After seeing that deleted scene where Ripley finds Dallas, I was so hoping somehow they would cut it back into the movie. I think it was the most emotional scene in the entire movie. I'm very glad to have been able to at least see it, though. |

The Deleted scene with Dallas perplexes me a little. There is only 1 alien and I assume that it cocooned Dallas with the intent of having it host a faehugger. However, there arent any face huggers anywhere cause the Queen et al are back on the alien space ship. Very confusing, I suppose the Alien was just acting on instinct.
I to wish this scene had been added back in, it would give some excellent foreshadowing into ALIENS. |

I think the only version of Aliens worth watching is the "rejiggered" one. It expands on Newt and Ripley's relationship, shows the loss of Newt's family, and reveals the death of Ripley's daughter, which is entirely left out of the theatrical version. This goes a long way to explaining why they become so attached to one another, and why Ripley is willing to risk death to save the little girl: she's come to think of Newt as the daughter she never got to know, and will not let another one die on her.
