Hmm... more than I thought.

I toyed with the idea of trying to collect them all.... but it's just soooo hard! Plus.... the "impossible to find for less than $300 ones" being missing would drive me crazy.
But... for now I have:

  • Dead Ringers
  • Do the Right Thing
  • Insomnia
  • Last Temptation of Christ, The

I just ordered "The Night Porter" a couple of days ago..hopefully it won't disappoint. John Woo's "The Killer" and "Hard Boiled" are awesome disks, as well as "Silence of The Lambs". I wish Criterion would release "2001 - A Space Odyssey" since that is a classic and deserves a decent release!!!!

Used to have Armageddon, but I couldn't justify owning that one, no matter how good the special features were. Sold it, and used that money to get the new Tron DVD.

Anybody that has Yojimbo, is it a good movie? I haven't been able to rent it yet, but my friend says that it's relly good. He said the plot is similar ("A samurai for hire plays the sides of a town for all its worth", is what he said) to Last Man Standing, which is like based on Yojimbo.

Yojimbo is a fantastic movie. It has been oft copied , sometimes whole (Fistful of Dollars, Last Man Standing) sometimes in pieces (Star Wars). But you cannot beat the original, which has Toshiro Mifune and Kurosawa's amazing directing.

LaserDisc:
CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND
I think I might have this LD as well. Is this the boxset w/ AC-3 audio?

Peace.....

No, that is Columbia/Tri-Star's 1997 LD release of CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND: THE COLLECTOR'S EDITION, which I also own (CE3K ranks in my top three films of all time, and this was the very last LD I ever bought), and most of which was ported over to the DVD release (most, but not all--no extensive photo galleries on the DVD, or unedited original trailer). The Criterion Collection LaserDisc was released years prior, and features the original 1977 theatrical cut, with the added footage for 1980's Special Edition tacked on a la carte at the end of each side, so that the viewer could program that footage to be entered into the film proper, in an embryonic version of DVD's seamless branching. Depending on how you programmed your player, you could watch the theatrical cut, the Special Edition cut, or a mammoth synthesis of the two. A handful of years later, Spielberg made what he considers his definitive cut of CE3K, entitled the COLLECTOR'S EDITION, which is, again, the LD you refer to. So, if you own both the Criterion release and the Columbia/Tri-Star release, you have no less than four different edits of CE3K at your hand!

Just discovered Criterion....

A lot easier to type than Werther's list. Naturally, I'm jealous too.

Re

I have a rather modest collection.

Armageddon - #40
Brazil - #51
Chasing Amy - #75
Robocop - #23
Rock - #108
Rushmore - #65
Silence of the Lambs - #13

I really like Criterion. But I really don't see the big deal. I never plan on getting them all. Most of their titles don't appeal to me.

I don't plan on ever striving for all of them, but there are still a bunch that I want. Right now I have:

Brazil
Beastie Boys: Video Anthology
Chasing Amy
Silence of the Lambs

Plan to get (soon):

Seven Samurai
Yojimbo
Sanjuro
Hidden Fortress
Rushmore
Spartacus
Robocop (if I can)
Time Bandits

Anyone out there who has The Killer or Hard Boiled, I'll offer you a mighty sum of $10 (CANADIAN!!!!!) to part with them.
