The forgotten western that NEEDS a S.E. - The Long Riders!

This is probably one of the BEST westerns ever made! I was thinking about it last night cause I saw a movie with Keith Carradine and he comes out in this long forgotten western. Never has the Story of The James gang ever been told so well and so convincingly. My dad loves this movie and I saw it for the first time around Christmas and I loved it! The best thing about this movie is that it tells the story about a gang full of brothers, and all the actors are actually brothers! I was blown away to see that James Keach and Stacy Keach (TV Titus) were bros! Than I saw the Carradine bros and I didnt know David (Kung-Fu) and Robert (Revenge of the nerds) were related. I couldnt believe it. It was weird seeing a "nerd" in the movie, but after awhile it didnt matter, I was totally convinced that he was a cowboy. Than there are the Quaid bros, that everyone knows, and the Guest bros. I love this damn movie. Real life brothers playing roles of people that actually existed and were actually brothers. I think a commentary with each of the brothers would be a dream come true. This movie deserves it.

Any thoughts?

I like this movie, too. The deal with the real-life brothers seemed like a gimmick at the time it came out, but luckily all of these brothers can act, and I think there's something in that connection that helped make the film work. It was also beautifully filmed, though with a strong sensibility of the time in which it was made, especially regarding violence. Although it's a western, it's closer in style to Bonnie and Clyde than anything John Ford ever filmed. The climactic shoot-out is stunning, and it has stayed with me since I first saw the film in the early 80s.

I think this may have been Ry Cooder's first turn at film scoring, and he did an excellent job, coming up with something authentic sounding and yet new for western films.

I would love to see an SE of this one.

BTW, Ravenous, David, Keith and Robert Carradine are half-brothers and there's a considerable gap in their ages, but it still works.

Half Brothers? Im gonna take a guess and say that Keith and Robert are full brothers cause they look alike the most.

Do you watch the Tv show Titus? It has Stacy Keach as his dad. A few weeks ago David Carradine did a cameo as his drunken best friend. That was so awesome!

My understanding was that all three Carradine brothers had different mothers. I never really saw much similarity among them in either appearance or vocal tone, so it just kind of fit.

On a tangent, I like that David has a good sense of humor about himself. He did an ad for Lipton Iced Tea several years ago that presented him as Kane (sp?) being challenged by bullies for his tea, but instead of beating them up Kung Fu style, he goes into a Stooges routine. Hysterical!

Master: So what have you learned, my son?
Kane: It is best not to sip...?
Master: Coitainly!
