This is really good news! I hope Criterion makes a new anamorphic transfer of 400 Blows.

If anything is different between the two versions, some people might pay more for the first version just to have that one in their collection, but probably not at the price it is at now. This is probably a good time to stick any 400 Blows CC onto eBay.

mmm... another shot at Ran...

(from above article)
"Now Wellspring is making an effort to bring out better quality discs, either in partnership with a company like Criterion or on its own, Cattabiani said. For instance, Wellspring itself will reissue an improved, remastered edition of Akira Kurosawa’s Ran..."

That's great news. I've avoided getting the Fox Lorber/Winstar version because their discs have been disappointing to me for the most part. The only one I've seen that's pretty decent is 'Yi Yi'.

I had no idea Wellspring was the same company. I just started seeing their name recently.

In fact, there's a very good anamorphic transfer in France, made by MK2 for the SE which includes Truffaut's short "Les Mistons", commentary tracks and lots of extra features. The film and the short have English.

A perfect (and very cheap if you buy the whole Antoine Doinel Pack) DVD edition.
