Anyone get Fresh?

Anyone find this yet? I haven't been able to find it in the stores. How is it? any good? I know I'm going to get it just wondering what you thought. Been waiting for a dvdfile review.
Thanks.

I got a gift cert at DVD Empire today as a V-Day gift and I used part of it to buy Fresh! Woo-Hoo!!!

The movie is cool and that is the MOST important factor to me. I'm sure the audio and video performance will be MORE than acceptable......

It's at least worth renting, if nothing else......

Peace....

This was always my personal favorite of the "hood" movies, moreso than "Juice," "Menace to Soceity," "Boyz in the Hood," etc. It has a great central performance by Sean Nelson and Sam Jackson and Giancarlo Esposito are terrific in smaller roles. The only problem it has is a rather unbelieveable ending.

I just watched FRESH last night on video. I really enjoyed it--Very good movie and a great acting job by Sean Nelson. I'm going to pick it up on my next DVD run...

I went to go buy FRESH today, but was shut-out!
The biggest Canadian retailer for DVDs told me, it's not on our system, I'd say at least a month until we (Canada) get it.
BWAH!?!?!?!?
The only times I recall a delay between US and Canada for a new release was with Boogie Nights: 2 disc, Bamboozled, and a few others.
I was really looking forward to getting this film!
Maybe the salesman didn't know what he was talking about... I'll check their webite I guess.

Any other Canadians here encounter such a problem???

I saw Fresh in the theaters when it first came out...don't recall it being that good....I'd have to say Boyz, Menace, Juice and Baby Boy are all superior. Snoop is a comic genius in Baby Boy. pac is in peak form in Juice. Tate as O-Dog is outstanding in Menace. And Boyz gets props in all areas. Fresh didnt stand out to me.

Re

I suggest you rent or buy Fresh again, because in my opinion, besides Boyz N the Hood, Fresh is THE best hood movie out there. I liked Menace, loved Juice, and tolerated Baby Boy, Fresh, is it's title, Fresh. It IMO focuses on what inner city life does the toyoung ones, while the other films mentioned are about adults and older people. I like the "drug" atmosphere, since the other movies totally neglect this life. Great movie, one of the best. I have it on VHS, and will pick up the dvd ASAP.

Back to the dvd, I am glad Beuna Vista didn't release this as one of their lame "Widescreen" dvds with nothing but a trailer or even that. They "kinda" went all out. They gave us a commentary and a production featurette (I imagine this is really short) and basically nothing else. But they put a little effort into this release and I give them props for that. Although I am a little dissapointed with the Stereo sound and them not going out with a 5.1 mix. But I can't complain. At least this is finally out on dvd.

Haven't seen any reviews on the disc, can someone point some out?

DVD looks

I loved Fresh and I really want the DVD.. unfortunately, I live in Canada and have run into the same problems as you, Marq. I'm going to a Weakerthans concert in Toronto this weekend, and I was thinking of dragging my girlfriend along to all the downtown DVD retailers on a search for it, but if it's not going to be out for another month that'll be kinda pointless... Does anyone know for sure when the DVD is going to be released in Canada?

I'm of the opinion that Fresh is the best hood movie for several reasons. First, it was the one that surprised me the most. Second it has a much more subdued tone than the other films. Finally, it has dated the best. Menace is still a good film, even it seems very obvious at this point. Juice is incredibly dated, in language, style, and attitude, granted the performance by Tupac (as in most of his films) is the best thing about it. Boyz in the Hood was always the least subtle, and now it looks incredibly preachy. And I haven't seen it in almost six years. Each scene is a "message" scene. That's why the biggest laugh (for me) in Don't Be a Menace, was the one with Keenan Ivory Wayans as the mailman, who shows up during each overblown emotional scene and says "Message!"

Crap, I must be losing my mind. I thought Fresh had the trailer included.

Other than that, I am glad to (finally!) own this film. I think it has stood up very well over time. I agree that Boys In the Hood comes off very preachy.

I wish i could say the same tomdkat!

I've been looking for this DVD every couple of weeks since it was released in February!!! Damn Canadian retails (this is the longesy by far I've had to wait for a DVD past its release date... by far!). Maybe I'll just order it online. I've been craving it for too long now.

When I got my player and made my list of "must own movies", Fresh was one of them.

One of the things I am really happy about is the 16 x 9 transfer. I had figured it would be non-anamorphic like Good Will Hunting (USA) and Pulp Fiction. I am also glad they put on Sean Nelson's audition tape, I thought that was interesting.

Marq, I don't understand why it is taking so long to get to Canada. Do they just not want to carry it? I know at least one Canadian retailer who declined to carry Welcome to the Dollhouse.

I went to a couple of stores on the Feb. release date and asked if it came in and they looked it up and they said it was not on their systems... ie: not to be shipped to Canada. I checked back a couple of weeks later and they both said they'd have it in by April. Checked in April, still nothing. Same thing for May and June.
For some reason it's not being shipped to my area (and maybe the country as a whol?). It's not they don't want to carry it, they just aren't getting it. I don't understand why they don't just ship it in as an import from the U.S. though.

Oh well, I'll order it soon enough.
By the way, I've seen Welcome to the Dollhouse in most every store I go to. I'm holding out on that one for a special edition (that will likely never come considering the sparce extras on Happiness and the upcoming Storytelling).

I haven't seen it anywhere in Hamilton or Toronto either... so I think we can probably extrapolate that it's not being shipped in Ontario, and probably not anywhere in Canada... which really sucks, because I'd really like to add it to my collection.

Rhett, it's a damn conspiracy!!!

I'll be on the lookout for it when I'm in the U.S. this summer. I'm going to Cleveland and perhaps North Carolina.
We shall see....

Any updates on Fresh and whether any Canadians have found it? I saw it in a local HMV recently, but it was 42.99, and that seemed a bit ridiculous... It would cost less for me to import it from the States. What's up with Miramax? As far as I know, The Crow (the newer version) isn't available here either...

Funny, I finally saw a copy of Fresh at my local HMV last Monday! The copy I saw was also overpriced, at only $35.99.

However, this was UGLY. The cover art was completly different than the US release (it very heavy on the yellow), and it of course had twice as much writing on the front, back, and spine due to that damn bilingual Alliance obsession. Except that the french title was also "Fresh", so it was just written twice (once upside down) on the spine. Very ugly sleeve as a whole.

Based on that and the inflated price, it looks like I'll have to import it from the US when I next order from Amazon. I haven't seen it anywhere else (Future Shop, etc), but now that I have seen the Canadian release, I'd much rather the US version.
Alliance is definitely mucking up the Canadian releases of Miramax titles big time. The end does not appear too soon, either...

Thanks for the heads-up on the packaging Marq, I didn't take a good enough look at it to notice that. Fucking Alliance... :rar:

I'll have to import it too. Call me obsessive, but I won't be able to tolerate having the ugly Alliance version in my collection.
