Superbit Comparisons

Sure we've all talked about picture/audio quality. But I want to know what features we're missing out on. I know the 5th Element standard ed has nothing, absolutely nothing so superbit is an obvious choice. The ones that I do want to know about are the Johnny Pneumonic (sp?), Gattaca, and upcoming Starship Troopers DVD. Are the extras on any of those enough to make me say "i need the old one!"?? Also, Johnny and Gataca SB as good as the 5-element SB?

If you're looking for extras I think SB isn't your choice, the whole space in the DVD is dedicated to A/V quality.

I'm still waiting for those 2 disc SB releases.

Vertical Limit - The superbit will be missing Commentary, Making of, documentary, and a boat load more.

Johnny Mnemonic - The original DVD had nothing so no worries here.

Dracula - See above

5th Element - see above.

Desperado - See above

Big Hit - the original dvd had a commentary and some other extras.

Gattaca - Missing featurette, Deleted Scenes and trailers.

Air Force One - Missing Commentary and Trailer

CTHD - Don't remember what was on the dvd. But it had features.

The original CTHD has a making of that was originally broadcast on Bravo I think. I don't remember what else it has, other than animated menus that gave away the ending of the film.

Well that's the other way around than what I thought. I always thought Gattaca had nothing and Johnny Mnemonic had some extras. Hmmm, so Johnny Mnemonic is a SB no brainer but how are the extras on Gattaca? Sometimes the featurettes are just plain boring and the deleted scenes were obviously cut for a reason. Is that the case w/ Gattaca?

I have not yet checked out the Gattaca dvd, but on another message board (don't know if I can post a link here) they were discussing the Gattaca DVD before the Superbit was ever mentioned and everyone said the deleted scenes added to the film and were great and said the featurette (about 15 min) was interesting as well. And the older dvd had great audio/video quality as well. I just watched this movie in my Biology class about 2 weeks ago (teacher was having a baby, so we had a sub) and loved the movie. Thinking about buying it and if I do, I will go for the older version, because it was great audio/visual and has some interesting features from what I hear, while the superbit just has great audio/video.

I'm not a huge superbit fan so my opinion is probably not the best.

I love the Superbits editions. The quality is outstanding. In most cases I already had the regular release and I repurchased the superbits edition.

As far as Starship Troopers goes, there's a 2-Disc SE supposedly coming out by the end of this year, so I'd personally hold off on the SuperBit.

I'm getting a DTS receiver soon, and I was going to pick up the Superbits of Fifth Element, Desperado, and Dracula, as the originals are already pretty featureless. Would you say Superbits are worth it for the DTS track? I'm getting a new TV too, but it won't be quite high-end enough to take full advantage of the improved picture.

I've got the Desperado SB, and the DTS track is pretty impressive, the picture is a bit better too.

The picture on the Desperado superbits disc is stuning. And the DTS track is absolutely fantastic.

I'll take A/V quality over extras any time. I don't need no stink'en extras.

Don't worry I'm sure they will be released again as SB SE, so that people will go out and buy them again.

Well, since other people are debating superbits again, I thought I might barge in and give my 2 cents.....

Superbit is a waste of a dvd. One of the main things that got me hook on dvds were extras. And the audio/visuals are always great. So why get a dvd with super A/V, when you can get a dvd with great A/V, and special features......

It doesn't add up to me, but then again, I don't have a 50 inch Flatscreen projector tv, anyways, those who want superbits will buy them, I however, will not.

In response to the question about the Gattaca DVD: the featurette was short; wasn't as "fluff" as some, but certainly not in depth. The deleted scenes were very interesting, although uneven. Some of them seemed to have been cut only for time, while some were obviously better left out. I believe the trailer was there also, though I'm not at home and can't check right now. I always like to have the trailer, though, myself.

As for the picture, I've never had anything to complain about, but I'm only watching them on a 25" TV. If you've got a huge, HD setup and those extras (admittedly, not TOO many) don't interest you, you may want to spring for the superbit. If you're down here with the rest of us mortals I'd suggest the standard version, as I'm sure it's a lot cheaper.

anyway, i'm going to check my store if there are any gataca dvds and check out the features that way.
