Fire Walk with Me - Documentary
Has anyone had a chance to check out the documentary included on the Fire Walk with Me DVD? I thought it was horrible.
Goofy edits, sped-up footage, fragmented / insubstantial interviews - they made everyone involved with Twin Peaks look ridiculous. All that's missing are fart sounds at every edit and Benny Hill music playing in the background. It is as if they wanted to dilute and subvert any power this film and television series might have had. By not including the deleted scenes everyone petitioned for and then slapping together this P.O.S. documentary, New Line has added insult to injury and made suckers of all die hard Lynch fans. |

I have NOT seen this DVD, yet, but I bought 2 copies yesterday as gifts for my mom and a friend of mine.
I was surprised to learn the video transfer was NOT anamorephic... ![]() I have this on LD and if the extra features basically suck, then I might not buy this DVD after all.... Or maybe I will to get the dts audio.... How is it, by the way? Peace......

The DTS audio is good. It isn't reference quality or particularly aggressive in the surround department but it's good. This whole DVD release is a big f**k you to everyone who has waited so long for this film.
Wait until you see this documentary though. Oh my God. It looks like they sat a hyperactive twelve year-old in front of Final Cut Pro and said "could you please ruin this for us?" |

Maybe the wanted to make the documentrary "weird" to stick with the "weirdness" of the movie and the whole "Twin Peaks" phenomenon?
Peace......

It's really really juvenile. :rar: sigh. . . perhaps we can petition new line for deleted scenes from the documentary? so we could, uhm, actually hear the interviews that took place? instead of: Michael Anderson: Garmonbozia........ Kyle: ".... Yeah, that was really funny." |

Damn! This does NOT bode well!
I picked up the disk late last night and didn't get a chance to look at it at all.....guess I'll check it out tonight. And I was SO looking forward to the documentary (sigh).

Not anamorphic? Strange. From the DVDFile review:
"The image quality is by far the best the movie has ever looked on home video. Its sharp, anamorphically enhanced picture brings more detail to the photographic textures Lynch likes to capture." Can anyone confirm this? |

I bought the DVD last night at Wal-Mart - got it for $14.95, no less! - and watched the first 25-30 minutes of the movie. I will admit that the print used for the DVD is extremely clean and free of blemishes, which is cool, but the film appears to be more of a "matted"-style widescreen transfer. Then again, I was watching it rather late last night, so maybe it was the suggestion that it looks like a matted transfer.
Haven't had the opportunity yet to look at the 30-minute documentary yet, but I would assume that they didn't want to re-hash a lot of what had been used on the Twin Peaks Season One box set. The theatrical trailer looked like it could have been cleaned up a bit, though. Anybody view the DVD credits thing on the disc? Is that bizarre or what? After the credits, it just keeps on re-looping that closeup of the guy eating from the spoon. What in the world is that all about? I got tired of looking at it after 30-40 seconds of a constant re-loop and went back to the main menu. Has the Region 2 release come out yet, with the reported deleted scenes on there? If so, let me know, because I want to find that one for my collection!

Ughh. This is all so damned diappointing. I don't have my disc yet, but this is ridiculous. I remember a few months ago at a New Line chat they were saying how excited they were about the disc...blah blah blah. I don't know. For a film I care about this much, I'd like to hear more positive news.
Can't seem to get a straight answer on is it anamorphic or not? and is the DTS sound mix good or not? I guess I'll have to wait and see for myself. ![]()

I liked the season one documentary. Although it is made up of material shot during the same season one interviews, The Fire Walk with Me documentary is complete crap. It's the choice of material and the way it is edited that drives me crazy. It's the worst piece of... supplementary material I've ever seen.

As for the DVD NOT being anamorphic, there were NO anamorphic indicators on the packaging and the page for this title on DVD Empire does NOT list it as being anamorphic. So I concluded that this title is NOT anamorphic.
Again, I have NOT watched the DVD (yet), but I will borrow my friend's copy (the gift) and try it out. I'm sure others will post as to whether this title is anamorphic or not. ![]() Peace.....

Amazon.com says "• Widescreen anamorphic format" as well as being mentioned in the dvdfile.com review.
Again, I don't remember seeing (or for that matter, not seeing) any words to the contrary on the package..... I'll have to check it out later, I'm sure others will as well...

Aside from not being anamorphic and having a terrible documentary, Fire Walk With Me has no scene selection option. I have to admit that I was hyped about this dvd and I was completely let down by New Line. I don't think they really cared about what the fans of Twin Peaks/Fire Walk With Me wanted, I just think they knew the demand for this title on dvd and got it out as fast as they could without taking the time to make it an excellent dvd. Maybe one day (may not ever happen) MGM or Columbia-Tristar will pick up the rights and release a damn fine SE or something of Fire Walk With Me and I say that because New Line sure as hell didn't. Oh, and the way the documentary is presented, it looks as if New Line's janitor was in charge of making it and in charge of producing the whole dvd.

Here's what I think: A seriously good study of the film whether it be one of the excellent essays from Wrapped in Plastic or what have you. Critical reviews both negative and positive (I miss the days when Criterion did this with some titles. I've only seen it recently on FIGHT CLUB (liner notes) and BAISE MOI (nicely done) all TV and radio spots (Anchor Bay would have done this and made it cool) Information, pics and whatever else from its premiere at Cannes. just more, more, more. If friggin' BONES and NEXT FRIDAY can be Platinum Titles, why can't this be...

this is getting funny. But it is Lynch's decision most likely. Still, that's a bit frustrating. Even though I understand and love the guy, it's a bit of an aggravation. I'm really glad to be finally getting it on DVD, but Jesus, couldn't New Line have made this a bit more fun for us after this time. I do appreciate the DTS though. ![]()

according to DVD Journal, this is indeed an anamorphic transfer. I think their review of the film itself is :flush:

According tothe DVDfile review:
there IS chapter stops! But there is no scene selection menu. Just thought I'd clear up some confusion. So you can use your remote to jump ahead and back to scenes, but there's no menu to guide you .I'm POSITIVE this DVD is anamphic. the initial release news said so, DVD File saus so, DVD Journal says so. i don't see how they would all miss this news. Sadly, I HAVE to buy this DVD soon. I love the movie too much to wait, and I'd love to see it in widescreen, and I do not foresee another DVD coming anytime soon. It's really too bad about the documentary. It's too bad DVDFile made no mention of how crappy it appears (I guess the reviewer liked it is all). |

Jeez. It's Anamorphic. I'm watching it right now. And, yeah, it's "matted". At least now it's matted correctly, though. No cutting the angel's head off.

I had a feeling it was a "matted" format rather than true anamorphic widescreen. It looks too convenient as a matted transfer to be anything else but.
And I agree, the WB was really chintzy on the extra features - a trailer and slipshod 30-minute featurette? Not to mention bizarre DVD credits? (Anyone figure out just what the deal was about the DVD credits yet? I sure can't!) Besides, has anyone overseas been able to find the Region 2 release with the outtakes on it? If so, let me know, please! At the very least they should make a DVD release the same across the board and not different for different regions. I can understand rights issues, but they should also gear it for the fans as well.

There is no region 2 release with outtakes. There is just a suggestion that there might be. The French company that owns the footage (and indirectly financed the film -I think they ended up with the assets of the company that did) might do their own DVD with the scenes. The hope is, if it gets made, it might filter over to us in region 1. Here's a link http://www.geocities.com/fwwmfight/

What does an anamorphically encoded DVD have to do with a film print matted for 1.85:1??? Any aspect ratio can be made anamorphic on DVD! Or do you refer to the fact that the film does not appear to be shown as filmed anamorphically? If that's the case, it's because, contrary to most of Lynch's canon, TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME was not filmed with an anamorphic (i.e. 2.35:1) lens... In short, an anamorphic, 1:85:1-matted widescreen transfer is what was required out of this disc, and that's exactly what we got. Oh, and to your comment that the theatrical trailer could have been cleaned up--what in the sweet f*ck are you smoking (again, with all due respect)????????????????????????????? That is one of the cleanest, most meticulously transfered trailers I've ever seen on DVD, and it's especially pleasant, considering the movie is a decade old...
