How weird are we?

I am a certified DVD nut. My friends just say I'm weird
I keep an excel document detailing when I last watched a movie and how many times I have seen it.
I also have several sections in my collection

movie series, i.e., Tremors 1,2,3
Remakes of Movies and TV shows
Kung-fu
Sci-Fi
Action/Adventure
Comedy
Arnold
Mel Gibson
Bruce Willis
Jet Li

Does anyone else have similar idiosyncrasies?

I too keep a spreadsheet of my collection, but it isn't as detailed as yours! I don't know anyone personally that has our similar obsession.
I feel this is not weird, but is what makes us unique.

The only database that I use to organize my dvds is dvdprofiler. I do keep my disks organized by section. I have seperate sections for specific directors along with these sections: foreign, music, epics, comedy, action, horror/sci-fi, drama and maybe a couple more. I keep reorganzing things. It keeps me entertained.

I don't use any online tracking services, but I do have a nice Excel spread sheet going for my inventory.

I have the "have" tab and the "want" tab and the "future" releases tab.

I also list purchase price vs. MSRP, studio, genre, main stars, etc.

-Flash

PS. I never thought about listed last time viewed or number of times viewed. Interesting idea.

I haven't catalogued my titles anywhere online or on a computer. I have a friend who does.

But I do keep my dvd's organized on shelves alphabetically by studio, and I don't like when they are out of line. I like to be a little weird that way.

I too have an Excel spreadsheet! And I too have a "seen" check mark column on it! I also have my collection on dvdaficionado.

I keep all of my DVd's together in alphabetical order. I have a spreadsheet with them all listed, again alphabetical, with a little blurb about how I feel about each specific film. Needless to say, I had some time on my hands when I reviewed all 145 of them.

I also keep at least one empty DVD space per shelf so as not to put pressure on those FRIGGEN STUPID SNAPPER CASES that pepper my collection.

Once a week I experiment with my collection to see if I can store it better than just boring old a-z.
My missus thinks i'm insane because it always ends up back the same with another couple of hours wasted. This week I might try J.P's idea of storing the collection according to genre or actor and see how that looks.

I like to keep a record of what commentaries I have and havn't listened to.This ensures I don't forget about anything.I am very particular about watching/listening to everything on every disc at least once and with so many discs, extras and numerous commentaries it's hard to keep track at times.I suppose this is a combination of my appetite for information on films and also wanting to maximise use of the format because let's face it, it's a film enthusiasts dream!
And of course i like getting value for money.

I'm just not that obsessed with my collection. They're on my bookshelves in alphabetical-chronological order.
The only discs that aren't mixed in with my collection are the ones that I haven't watched yet...ones that I'm not sure if I'll keep.

I, too, have an Excel spreadsheet with all my DVDs on it. It has individual sheets, sorted by "Movies", "TV", "Multipacks" (for the ultra-cheapo 2 on 1 disk normally reserved for B grades & lower), "Music", "Box Set Movies", "Want", and "ATF" (those select disks I'd want with me on a deserted island).

I only have checkboxes for "seen" (there are a few disks I own that I haven't gotten around to viewing) and date of the movie release.

Mine is a bit unique, though, for the fact that it's contained in my Sony Clie color Palm device....for those "I'm at Fry's -- what DVDs do I have/want?" and for sharing with people at work "on the fly."

Not as unique as you think, I know a few people that do this, as well as myself

I'm also guilty of that.

Also I never put the DVD on my shelf untill I've watched it.

I also am constatly making lists Exaples: Best comentarys, best picture, best sound Etc. I think I've watched High Fidelity too many times.

Lastly I never let anyone borrow a DVD from me untill I've watched it. Yes Im an obsessive copulsive.

I have everything sorted by genre (thats what a year of working at the video-store did to me) and I get flak from my fiancee all the time...

I always want to re-org my collection ala "high Fidelity", but can't think of a good way to do it... Auto-biographical is too tough...

I just use DVDProfiler to keep track of things, but I've started to stick post-its with notes on a film inside the case... Stuff like which comentaries I've listened to, and what chapters are good for a demo...

I was working for an xml company a while back so for fun I made a custom dtd (document-type definition) for dvd cataloguing, which I use to keep track of what dvds I have/want.

I keep my dvds arranged alphabetically, with one row designated for movies I haven't watched yet. I don't have a palm or else I would have the data on it as well.

So include me in as "one who is weird/geeky"

I'm pretty anal about my collection. I have a DVD/Video shelf. The top 2 shelves hold my wife's collection of ceramic teddy bears.
The next 2 shelve hold my/our collection of almost 100 DVDs, arranged alphabetically. (the bottom shelf is our Disney VHS's)
I usep DVD profiler, but my internet connection at home sucked, so I stopped. Then I created a database on Lotus Approach, and I used a lot of Profiler type info, and I scanned covers & everything, but then it became a pain.
So I rebuilt my database, put in less info, no pictures, and it's current, becuase I input it this past week.

I have all my titles seperated by the company that published the movie( ex. 20th Century Fox, Dreamworks,etc.).
Then I fill in what the aspect ratio the movie is presented in. I feel for me it's a better way to track which pan & scam titles I can upgrade to widescreen when it's double dipped(ex. Wiily Wonka).
Finally, I write in the type of surround sound is used DD 5.1 DTS
DS 2.0 and such.
Man am I anal about my collection.

Does anyone remember the scene in Barry Levinson's "DINER" where Daniel Stern yells at his wife (Ellen Barkin) about the way she had is records all out of order!? "You have James Brown mixed in with the R&B section!" *L*

I keep mine in order of the studios... this way know what to expect from the movie (based on the studio).

10 years or so ago with my laserdiscs, I use to do a nice looking catalogue with the title, director, ratio, sound format, plus the extras included. The movies were grouped in to the different chapters (drama, comedy). Yes chapters... a couple pages per section... one for Drama, one for Comedy. It took a couple pages just to properly and visually display the info for each chapter/section.

Plus at the back I had different pages on diffrerent topics for all the common questions asked about home theatre... "What is widescreen", "What is surround sound"... its very visual and easy to understand, as well as teaching them what the hub-bub of all this home theatre stuff is... plus the movie section was easy to use and helpful for those people who did know what to look. :-) ...Other Home theatre nuts like us!!

But now i have too many movies (on lasersdsics and dvds) that it got too big... and time consuming to update and print out with the tabs for easy seeing at a glance. it was like manufacturing a book/magazine each time I updated it.

I think people were more impressed with the design of the catalogue then what movies I had... but once I played the movie!! :-) WOW!!!

All I do is seperate my Hong Kong movies from my main stash, and I keep my snappers seperated from everything cause they look ugly. No particular order on my shelf, just thrown around and about.

I have mine alphabetically and DVDs like Akira are in front all of them. Some box sets are in there alphabetically, my Kubrick Collection is seperated though. My Criterions were seperated also and are put in a seperate rack, spine arranged. My other sets are put away specially also. I need to get another rack for Television sets also.

On my computer I have each movie, and how many discs and what region it is. Im also part way on doing a 2 page spread for each film, with film & Dvd details - for handy reference.

I used to keep 2 charts. One based on how many times I saw a movie, and what percentage of times I watched it. And also another chart with percentage of overall time I watched the film. (I thought the 1st chart may be slightly unfair as some movies are 90 mins and some are 200).

I stopped doing the chart once the collection hit 50 cos really i spent too much time each day updating this rather than watching movies. ANd now with a collectoin 5 times as big, fuck would be a masisve pain. - although sometimes I wish i still did it.. I should start one from today since its the first day of Autumn. Nice time to start
