The Musketeer

I am posting this as a warning to all would be purchasers of "The Musketeer" DO NOT in any way shape or form, purchase this disc. It is absolutely horrible, Im sure even PDJ has something bad to say about this pile of stinking manure.....

Bad acting, horrible effects, (especially the rain falling in only one spot in the shot.) and to top it off, a horrible plot....

Please for your sake, do not go anywhere near this DVD.

Already picked it up unfortunatly. Not that good of a movie. The transfer was kinda bad too in my opinion. Grany in many scenes with washed out colors. Unless that's what was intended.

I was actually cruising the net while the movie was playing so I didn't really catch the plot other then ***SPOILER ALERT*** bad guy kills parents, son seeks revenge for the rest of his life searching for...(get this) THE MAN IN BLACK!". (Sound familiar anybody?)

Mena Suvari turned in another STELLAR performance (NOT) and the presence of Catherine Den-whatever her name is didn't do a damn thing for the movie.

The fight coreography was cool though.

thought the movie was pretty crappy. the only thing it had going for it was the fight scenes, and even those were screwed up by bad directing. They would zoom out way too much during the fight scenes IMO.

I rented this last week and thought it was awful. The lead was really weak and the story boring. Plus, it was so obvious that it wasn't him during all the stunts--i mean painfully obvious. What a waste--why would Tim Roth take a role that he's played a dozen times already??

Yeah, I thought this looked like a cheesy poopfest, but thanks guys for setting the record straight and saving a few of us $20! And I know I'm usually sarcastic, but that was the honest truth! How long was this at the theaters, one showing?

I'd rather the money was spent to give us some new transfers of Richard Lester's The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers. The first is better than the second, but the second is far better than either of the musketeers pretenders that were produced since.

Who has a gun?

Horrible piece of crap movie. The action scenes could have been good but the directing just sucked. Quick cuts and zoomed in and out way too much. Cant tell what the hell is going on. Another american film with lousy directing in fight scenes. When will the madness stop with these MTV action directors!!!

I completely agree...even at 627 dvds, I refuse to buy "The Musketeer." I saw it in the theater and it was hideous. Had "The Wash" not come out a few weeks later, it would have been the worst of 2001. Ughhh.

Im still gonna rent it. I cant wait to see it!

I wish and pray for a SE of the Disney version though! Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, and Oliver Platt were great! I want a special edition so bad. Commentary would also rule.

It's not the DVD's fault: The original film was hideous. The action scenes are filmed in extreme closeup; you can't tell what the hell is going on. The famous fight at the inn is film in backlit darkness, so you can't see anything there, even in well-composed scenes. Also, the director has a penchant for obstructing actors (and I use the term loosely) with objects during tracking shots of dialogue (candelabras, pillars, etc.)... Another hoot is a character who wears the same shirt after some ten years have elapsed...
And don't even get me started on Mena Suvari's acting.

A movie which should have been prevented from being immortalized on DVD...

Hear, hear! I love the Lester Musketeer films. The current DVD's of those are at least better than the TV prints I had on tape. Great casts with Michael York, Oliver Reed, Faye Dunaway, Heston as the Cardinal, Spike Milligan (!), et al, and William Hobbs' superb fight choreography, George MacDonalf Fraser's clever script which faithfully adapted Dumas' novel.

Lester actually filmed one long epic based on Dumas' novel, and the decision was later made to release the film in two parts, much to the chagrin of the stars who were only paid for one film. Aside from adding some brief narration, and having Lalo Schriffrin score the second one (Michel Legrand scored the first one), the films are pretty seamless. I always think of them as two parts of the same film, and do not really prefer one part to the other. The first is funnier, the second more dramatic.

These films are must-sees! The Musketeer looked like asswipe to me, and I don't even plan on renting it.

This movie was at the TOP of my list of worst of 2001 (in the Best/Worst of 2001 Thread). (right next to Kiss of the Dragon and Pearl Harbor). Though Musketeer is FAR worse than the other two.

Let's see, there's laughable editing (scenes change abruptly for no reason), the most uncharismatic male lead in a long time (he looked like he stepped off of Dawson's Creek), sleep-inducing and predictable storyline, uninspired direction by a hack director, Peter Hyams "End of Days"......and on and on

People have been quite cruel towards Mena Sevari and some have said her face resembles, get this, an "alien", or even nick-named her "frog-face". To tell you the truth, I agree! Muhahaha.

The 70s Musketeers by Lester were outstanding. Exquisite cinematography, and that familair witty tone of Lester, make them very enjoyable. And I don't particularly care about Raquel Welch but one must admit she was amazingly hot in those films.

Kinda reminds me of Christina Ricci to some extent. Apologies to Ricci fans out there, but it's true.
