What Is The Best New Jersey Trilogy Film?
In a previous post, I said I am watching all of the films (including the Television series in one day). I went to see Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back in the theatres. Going to pick it up along with The Musketter and some more today. So, which is the best? I would say Chasing Amy. It is the greatest comedy ever made.

Funny how opinions vary.
Anyone ever hear the rumor that Clerks was originally supposed to be filmed from a high angle, as if the audience was watching a tape of what the security camera had recorded? -Flash

1) Clerks
2) Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back 3) Mallrats 4) Dogma 5) Chasing Amy Mind you, the top 3 are so close that it is a virtual tie. As for Chasing Amy, I don't know. Its a good movie, there is no denying that and I do have to buy it on DVD soon (Maybe when I pick up J&SBSB this Saturday) but I guess the overall movie didn't appeal to me quite as much as the other 4. Haven't seen Clerks: Uncensored, so I cannot rate that. |

For the record, I voted Mallrats. This is not a position I can defend convincingly, but at least two other people claim to agree. They didn't actually vote, which perhaps goes to show that people are who liked Mallrats aren't all that bright.

1. Dogma- for being able to balance tone wonderfully and being able to make a good film out of a concept that could have easily become a saturday night live sketch. A film that is not acknowledged now but will be in the years to come by critics and fans. I honestly don't know why everyone knocks it so much- some of you guys need to watch it again.
2. Clerks- I first saw this film while working in a small grocery store, and my brother worked across the street in a video store- so the movie had a very profound affect- I saw so much of myself in Dante. Still do see a little of him. one of the best "where do I go with my life now" comedies ever made 3. Mallrats- Okay, I didn't like it the first time, because I saw Clerks on video two weeks earlier and the movie spoke to me more than maybe any other 90's film did. But after seeing Dogma in 99 I gave it and Chasing Amy a second chance. Very glad that I did because they are both great movies. Although Chasing Amy is the better of the two, I put this one ahead because it's so much fun. 4- Chasing Amy- alright everyone here thinks it's the best but consider my perspective. Dogma was a brilliantly realized theological/dramatical/comical masterpiece, Clerks was the best comedy of the 90's and Mallrats reminded me so much of high school days- The first three films on this list had personal worth more than just being great films. Amy is an amazing movie and I appreciate it as a film rather than a personal experience. 5. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back- This movie is uneven and a little on the annoying side at times but still a very funny movie. Again like Chasing Amy I enjoy it as a film but it doesn't have much personal importance. |

Like most of you, I like them all, but if I had to rank them...

Mallrats
Chasing Amy
Clerks
Dogma
Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back
Clerks - The Animated Series
I obviously have high hopes for Jersey Girl, which apparently Kevin has now finished the first draft of...

I wont put the cartoon in my choices, mainly cos it is a cartoon. And ive only watched the J&SBSB DVD once, and one cinema run but at the moment it stands.
1. CHASING AMY 2. CLERKS 3. DOGMA 4. JAY & SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK 5. MALLRATS But J&SBSB may go up to 3 or down to 5, and Dogma may flick depending on my mood at the time. But the first 2 on my list are set in stone. "Well look at this molosh mother fucker right here"

1- Mallrats
2- Clerks 3- Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back 4- Chasing Amy 5- Dogma However, I tend to see Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back as more of a "Greatest Hits" movie. I'm STILL trying to figure out why every keeps calling these 5 movies and a TV series a "trilogy" Go here for my short rant. Last edited by Chris Knight : 03-01-2002 at 06:53 PM. |

I know the movies are counted as the trilogy.. Not numerically a trilogy like they once were, but was the cartoon ever counted as it?

A trilogy is 3 movies... hence the prefix "tri" as in three.
It was a trilogy when it was just Clerks, Mallrats and Chasing Amy. When it got past three movies it ceased being a trilogy, but rather a series of movies. It is now a saga... the View Askew Saga or the "View Askewniverse." |

I know what a Trilogy is.. I understand the concept.
It is now just the grouped name for the movies. The trilogy now doesnt have the tri value.. Its just the grouping name Kevin Smith uses for the movies, like calling it the ViewAskewniverse, but that includes films like Drawing Files & Vulgar

joeykelly, if you are such a big fan of Kevin Smith, why even bother reading a thread about his films? Does bombing others threads bring you some sort of sick pleasure, because we don't appreciate that around here.
Bottom line... think before you post. j

1. Chasing Amy- Without a doubt, this is Smith at his best. I think it's because the story was so personal to him that it works so well. It also has the most fleshed out characters each with their own intricate flaws and facets. It also has some of the best one liners. No one can deliver Kevin Smith dialogue like fuckin Jason Lee. Genius!
2. Mallrats - That's right, Mallrats is number 2. I think this one will continue to become more and more appreciated as time goes by. Lots of great dialogue and fairly fleshed out characters. This movie's achilies heel is Jeremy London. Sorry, but this guy is as wooden as a cigar store indian. Thank god for Jason Lee because he steals this picture and carries it on his back. On a side note, this movie also contains one of the best pieces of unused Kevin Smith dialogue: In an unused opening voice over, Brodie introduces all the characters and says this about Brandi: This is T.S.'s girlfriend Brandi Svenning, I saw her naked once when we all went to the beach. It was a bit awkward, but I did what any friend would do when he's just seen his best friend's girlfriend: I excused myself, and filed away the visual for future masturbatory use." ![]() 3. Clerks - Quite simply the funniest use of $27,000 ever. When I watch this one now, I think of how much funnier it could have been if Smith had a little more money to hire better actors. This movie has some of the best dialogue in any movie I had seen before or since. Great observational stuff, especially the "auto-felatio" bit...Genius. After repeated viewings, the actor's delivery of the lines gets to be a bit painful to watch and makes me yearn for better actors.... 4. Dogma - This was a great attempt at doing a lot of different things all in one movie. The cameos kind of took me out of it a bit, and the nature of the story didn't grab me. Admittedly, I need to watch this again, I am gonna rent the SE disc one of these days, so my opinion on this one is still shaping... 5. Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back - Definitely the weakest of the bunch IMO. I appreciate Smith wanting to do a "just for fun finale", but this one had too much recycled material for me. It was great to see all of the characters again, but none of them really did anything new, I especially at the "would you like a chocolate covered pretzel?" line. All in all it served it's purpose and was fun, but it could have been funnier. I think it was a mistake to not give Jason Lee more to do. I haven't seen Clerks TAS yet so I can't comment on it. I can't wait to see Jason Lee as Fletch in Kevin Smith's Fletch Won, but I don't know offhand what's going on with that project. Cheers. |
