Can anone recommend a good dvd store in NYC?

I'll be visiting friends in NY next week and I'd like to check out some good dvd stores. I can only play region 1 or 0 dvds, but I'd like to find strange or weird stuff that my local chain stores don't carry. For example, I'd like to pick up a copy of the Battle Royale region 0 dvd or vcd if I can find one. Any help? Disco Stu....? Anyone?

Thanks

Your first stop should be J&R Music on Park Row, across from City Hall. Also stop at Kim's Video at St. Mark's Place in the village, and Norman's Sound and Vision, right around the Corner.

I seem to remember Virgin's DVD section to be rather HUGE.... (TimesSquare, anyway)... I spent nearly 90 minutes walking around in that place!

ditto on that! I spent about 2 hours looking for stuff, and ended up buying nothing from this store, although, they do have a HUGE selection, I recommend it!

Yesterday I saw quite a few copies of Battle Royale.
Was showing Disco Stu around the London dvd stores with a pal.
Not seen this yet,but my pal is going to borrow it to me.
Any reason as to why its not out on Region 1?
Is it due a cinema release?

The Virgin in NYC Times Square (basement floor) is gigantic, but also check out the HMV store around the block (also basement).

The HMV I think has better cataloging of titles/genres and better deals on top new titles.

The Virgin Megastore has HUGE selection - practically every DVD...but at retail price. The Wiz on Broadway (around 4th) has decent selection and very good prices (all DVDs are at least $5 below retail it seems)....plus they put out DVDs before release date. Only thing that sucks is the high sales tax %. But, Virgin to me is only good for browsing and not buying. (They had a big 2-for-$20 sale last time I went with $14.95 SRP titles...which normally go for $9.99 at The Wiz. Also check out The Wiz when they have those $2 off all DVD days. Definitely cool.

The Virgin Megastore is awesome!! I was there in '98 when I was still buying LD's. I went to the Virgin Megastore in Paris last year, and their region 2 selection was astounding, but I was surprised to see how big there collection of R1 imports was...Pricey though! Damn! They also had a shiny new recordable DVD player...holy crap I'm going off topic...

Sorry, I was not able to get to a computer until today.

If you want Battle Royale, go to Chinatown, all the way on the east side up Canal, on Bowery Street. There are three stores on the east side of the street. You can buy the R3 Battle Royale there for $11-13, depending on which store you're in. Kim's will charge double that. If you're looking for the all-region PAL, you won't find it, except overpriced at Kim's. I have this disc, which I'll sell to you if you like.

Kim's has the best selection for all of your alternative needs. The best pricing for new stuff is Disc-O-Rama, on 4th between 6th and 7th, Blowout Video on 45th and B'way, and Entertainemnt Outlet on 40th and 5th, 14th and 5th, and another one in Chinatown.

For used, Entertainment Outlet, Disc-O-Rama on 4th btw. 5th and 6th (seperate store), Tower Records on 66th and B'way, any Blockbuster, and any of the Kim's.

hmmm...I don't think a PAL disk will play on my very-vanilla region 1 dvd player. I'd like to at least find the vcd, which is supposed to be decent.

J & R on Park Row is the best place, both in terms of price and selection. Virgin is a rip-off in terms of price.
