Donnie Darko

Has anyone seen this movie at all. I love the website and the trailer for the film and from what it sounds like the dvd is packed with extras, I'm just wondering how good the movie is.

It's an extremely amazing movie. Probably within my top 5 of 2001. Highly recommended.

Dustin's review is here: http://www.themovieboy.com/directlin...onniedarko.htm (It was #1 on his 2001 List.)

Thanks PD for linking my review..."Donnie Darko" is a masterpiece, and like he said, it was EASILY my #1 film from 2001. The studio completely ruined its financial chances, as it definitely had the capabilities to catch on with audiences had it not been thrown out (briefly) to the public without any advertising or promotion. It is not to be missed when it comes to DVD on the 19th

This started showing at only one theater here in Austin a couple of weeks ago --around the time reviews for the DVD were popping up at dvdfile and ign and the like.
Based on those reviews, I went and saw it, and thought that it was pretty good. I'm sure that I'll appreciate it more with another viewing (or two). I'll definately be picking it up next week.

GREAT interview with writer/director Richard Kelly posted today over at DVDShrine:

Good insight as to how the DVD production companies can totally fuck things up.....

I loved this flick and I'll be picking up the DVD.

Anyone have interpretations of the ending they'd like to share? Due to my feeble mind, I had trouble piecing together what actually happened in the movie...

As I took it, he went back in time through the little time deal in order for that girl who got hit by the car to live...but I am not exactly sure. Also, how did the engine crash in his house in the first place?

Picked it up blind and watched it last night.Wow....what a thoroughly compelling and engrossing movie.

Though I certainly need to view it again to help fill in some of the peices I couldn't quite make fit! It's a bit of a headscratcher at the end.Well for me it was anyhow

A highly recommended purchase

Apparently no one wanted to add their input as to possible ending explanations, so here's another question.

*SPOILERS AHEAD... I suppose...*
Donnie promises the heavy-set asian girl that someday, things are going to be much better for her. Does anything ever come of this? Was there something I missed here, or was this never resolved?

I don't know that anything necessarily "comes of this"...i take it more as Donnie being wise beyond his years and recognizing that, for her, things will get better. High school isn't the easiest time, after all.

ggggrreatght!

okay, I'm back, watched it

Well what I can say is that this film pissed me off in many ways,

first, THIS FILM HAS NO DAMN RIGHT TO BE SO GREAT!

second, how in the hell did this film slip through the cracks, its basicly a straight to video release, and deserved much better, the dvdfile reviewer might have been right when he said that it might not have been apropriate to push it so soon after 9/11/01, but really they could have held off or something!

third, the writer/director Richard Kelly is 10 days younger than me ! Damn with I would have went to fim school!

I just finished watching DONNIE DARKO on video (I have a strict no DVD rent's policy--this way when I get the DVD it looks a 100 times better than video--but i digress) The movie was very very original and I am a sucker for time-travel movies and I definitely have to watch it again but what I wanted to know was--(FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO PICKED IT UP EARLY) Do the commentaries explain a little more about all the twists and turns? Somebody let me know b/c the movie freaked me out yo!

This was gonna be a blind purchase for me today, based on all the great stuff I've heard. But let me ask you this... if I don't generally like David Lynch movies and their ilk, am I likely to enjoy Donnie? I've heard comparisons to Mulholland Drive (which I did not care for), and it scares me a little.

If you are the type of person that describes movies as "weird" then you might not like this. Personally I have never described a film as "weird" mabye "interesting". To me a description of "weird" means that you like movies that are "normal" like crap like 'Pearl Harbor' or 'American Pie'. Well I guess mabye to me "weird" means I'll like it, just me, I rather orginal or creative plotlines or story devices.

and if you look above,,, I absolutely Adore 'Donnie Darko'

I didn't use the word "weird", did I? I do like movies that are off the beaten path, such as Being John Malkovich, Delicatessen, and Brazil. I just don't tend to care for deliberately obscure, esoteric stuff like David Lynch tends to put out.

So I guess my question would be, is Donnie Darko closer to Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Terry Gilliam, or to David Lynch?

I can't really answer that question, but I also dislike it when moviemakers equate inaccessibility with art, and I definitely don't feel as though Richard Kelly did that with Darko. Maybe, though, you should avoid the blind purchase and give it a rent first, because although everyone here (including myself) seems to be pretty high on the flick, I think it may be of the love it or leave it variety.

Dont think I can answer that either, but I'd say that the first time you see it it will seem halfway obscure, second time it all come in clear

Here's my take on it...

In the montage after Donnie sets everything right, all the people have remnants of memories of what happened in the tangent reality. Thus, Jim Cunningham is full of remorse, (Apparently commiting suicide not long after, if you go to the website) Frank is dumbfounded and rubbing his eye, and Cherita (the girl you asked about) is lying in bed smiling, remembering Donnie's kind words. (If you recall, she had a crush on him, and now she takes to heart his words that everything will be better for her.)

I absolutely loved this movie, and it pains me that it has been so ignored. I'm going to make it a personal crusade to make sure this movie viewed by as many people I know as possible.

To those that have yet to decide, you may not enjoy this movie...but I urge you to check it out and see for yourself.

Oh my God!!!
This movie has to be one of my most favorites since it still has left a lasting impression. Thouroughly enjoyful and a great original story to boot. It was the first time I ever saw a movie and then commentary in one sitting. The commentary did explain in greater detail about the story and time travelling. i would love to say more but I will not ruin it for anybody. Just go watch the movie and judge for yourself.

Simply fucking brilliant. This is definitely one of my favorite movies of 2001. I love how the ending is left pretty wide open and doesn't just straight up tell you what happens in the end and why and is open to broad discussion and deliberation. We need more movies like this.

I finally got to see this film over the weekend. I ran out and bought this and Legally Blonde this weekend. I can't believe this movie didn't make it in the theatre!!! IT is one of the best movie I have seen. Simply amazing and the performances by everyone was great.

There's some great humor. I found myself LOL when the scene with the video of Partick Swayze's character came on. That was hilarious! There are also some very touching scene, the one in particular that I thought was perfect was when Donnie is sitting with his mother and he asks: " How does it feel to have a weirdo for a son?" and she emotionally replies: "It feels great". WOW and then the whole smurf thing. BRILLIANT!!!

Donnie darko has everything,
after watching last night's oscars, Its sad that a great film like this went so overlooked. 'A beautiful Mind' was good and all but Donnie Darko was 10 times more orginal. I guess it goes to show how politics and popularity rule in hollywood.
