Classics/Musicals that were released on LD but not on DVD

Let's start a new topic - Classics that aren't on DVD!

You know, if MGM still owned their own film library, we would have most of their classics on DVD now! There is such a shortage of Elizabeth Taylor, Judy Garland, and musicals in general.

So what are some classics/musicals that have been released on LD but not DVD? Let the floodgates open!!

Andy

Was Grease ever on LD?
Does this count as a "classic"?
I would love to have this on DVD. "Summer loving, had me a blast..."

There's a criterion LD of "The Tales of Hoffman" but it's not out on DVD... though I think it will in the near future. But that's the one I want.

- Easter Parade (PAL LD)

- Rich, Young and Pretty

- Three Little Words

- The Band Wagon (PAL LD)

- It's Always Fair Weather

- Bells Are Ringing

...from other studios...

- We're Not Dressing

- Showboat (1936)

- Down Argentine Way

- The Gang's All Here

- Star!

- Romance On The High Seas

- Finian's Rainbow

...and many others (e.g. the Astaire/Rogers Musicals)...

Personally, I'm waiting for all of the old Bette Davis classics. I have the ones that are out now, about 5 or 6, but there are many more.

1776!

There was a LD restoration of 1776 that featured scenes and numbers that had been cut from the release. It also featured an interesting commentary track by the director that explained how Jack Warner basically buggered the film. I would love to see this released on DVD. If it ever does get relesed, it'll probably be the cut version (like the cut version of The Alamo that was released on DVD).

I was thinking of 1776 as well. I have that LD (a Pioneer Special Edition) and it was one of my most exciting finds on video. It cost a bloody fortune, but it was worth it. That one may be hard to find, but Columbia later released the same version on LD (though probably without the commentary) and that one may still be available here and there. I found a copy for my sister a couple of years ago for $15.

The story is that the film was shown in its full 3-hour version for just a few days worth of previews. Then Jack Warner pulled it and ordered it trimmed to just a little over 2 hours. He claimed it was so it could show more times daily and make more money, but it was believed by some that, as a conservative, he was offended by the song "Cool Considerate Men." He had the cuts made without the director's (Peter Hunt's) knowledge and ordered the negatives destroyed. Fortunately, the editor saved the cuts and took them home, and someone found the original stereo soundtrack. It was a restoration on the order of A Star Is Born, and the result is fantastic even if the cut portions don't look so good. There's about one minute of missing footage and a couple of minutes in black and white that were pulled from a work print, but it's still incredible to see the whole thing in its Panavision OAR.

If it were released on DVD (and it should be) I don't see why they couldn't use the full version. I bet that modern equipment could make it look even better.

I wish they would release the Val Lewton Collection on DVD.
BEDLAM, GHOST SHIP, CAT PEOPLE, ISLE OF THE DEAD, LEOPARD MAN, THE BODY SNATCHER, CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE, I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE, SEVENTH VICTIM. I have the laserdisc set but it would look great on DVD.
