Boogie Nights surrounds?

I was just watching my Boogie Nights disc tonight (2-disc SE) when I realized that there is virtually NO surround mix on the DD5.1 track. I remember the Criterion Collection Laserdisc having a pretty aggressive surround mix and the DVD has a rather full 2.0 surround mix ... so what gives?

Have I got a bum disc or are the DD 5.1 surrounds intentionally subdued? This is a film just screaming for aural ambience to accompany the great visuals, yet all the sound on my disc seems to be spread across the front soundstage.

Anyone's help here would be greatly appreciated!

It's either your system or your particular disc. I can't check right now but I recall especially the scene when Dirk arrives at Jack's house for the first time..the whole pool party scene...you should hear plenty of action all around in that scene.

This was one of the very first discs I played when I got 5.1 so I was aware of it

PS- This might go better in the glitch exhaust. If so, a kind admin will move it for ya..don't worry.

I know its not the system, as other discs with active surround fields sound fine.

I'll re-watch the pool party scene when I get home tonight, but if I recall correctly, the only surround activity I really heard in that scene was when the camera goes underwater.

What about the new years eve part (I believe the chapter's called Little Bill's New Year)?

----------SPOILER------------

During the whole musical build up to and including the shot of the suicide, there is absolutely NO surround activity on my disc. Ditto on the musical montages following the making of Dirk's first movie.

Can anybody shed some light on how the DD 5.1 tracks for these scenes play on their systems? Again, I'm referencing the 2-disc SE of this title and I'd hate to think I got a defective copy.

Did you select DD5.1 and not Dolby Stereo? All I can say is Boogie Nights has a great 5.1 mix, at least my dvd/system does.

Yes, I definitely selected DD5.1 because I compared it to the DD2.0.
Thanks for your responses all, I guess I'll just have to go rent a copy and see how that one sounds.
