Training Day worth a blind buy?

Is the Training Day flick worht a blind buy? I've heard good and bag things about the flick. And also . . . is the casing a keep case, or a snapper? I heard from alot of people it's a keep case, but wasn't the flick from Warner Bros.? Thanks a ton!

I thoroughly enjoyed it....Denzel's performance was great! Now that said, you might want to give it a rent first.

I hate this film. IMO, it was the worst film I saw last year.

Wow, you must not see a lot of movies.

Some people don't like it because it's not what they expect. It's not a wall to wall action movie. It turns out to be more of a thriller, or a cat & mouse (you only realize that at the end).

Although I liked this movie a lot, esp. the performances and direction...can't see why anyone ever would blind buy a movie that they have never seen....makes no sense to me, rent it and then see if you like it.

It's worth seeing for the great performance by Washington, but I wouldn't recommend buying it.

I often "blind buy" movies as I consider renting a waste of money....

And, as mentioned in another thread, isn't going to see a movie at a cinema a "blind buy" considering :

a) You haven't seen it before
b) Two cinema tickets can be as much as a DVD anyhow....

Still, as mentioned above, this was (and is) a whole 'nother topic!

Certainly worth a purchase. I really enjoyed the film. This is the best I've ever seen Ethan Hawke, and really he is as much the lead or more so than Washington. An exciting and stylish little thriller that like JOY RIDE, is elevated above the norm by the performances.

This might influence your purchasing decision.

I read on two other message boards that Best Buy will be having Training Day DVD for $14.99

Absolutely.

Denzel is ferocious in this movie. A great role for him and Ethan Hawke makes up for Reality Bites with applomb - ...

I love buying blind...and getting stuff on DVD is the equivalent to seeing it at the theater for the wife and myself + you own it now. I mind the online reviews and the boards and have been 95% satisfied with my blind purchases. You can always use them as coasters!

If you love cop movies you will like this one. I enjoyed it so much but if your looking for a cop movie like Lethal Weapon it really is not like that IMO it is better b/c they put action into the movie really well. I Can't wait to buy it and see it again.

I wouldn't recommend it. Black and white characters (no pun intended) and a sub-par plot. Not awful for a one-time viewing thing, but not a great movie and certainly not one that I'd want to revisit.

While I don't get to see everything that I would like to, I do see alot of films. Many movies that got a second life and became popular on cable and video I saw in the theater. As far as last year went, I skipped films like Freddy Got Fingered which I may have put on the bottom of my list if I had gone.

I saw Training Day opening weekend and I left this film angry. The usher told me that a lot of people walked out of it and others told him they didn't like it.

I think there is some merit in buying DVDs instead of renting them because the purchase cost is so low. PhlaQ may like this movie, a lot of people did. I didn't.

I have discovered, when I hear "the acting is so good" it usually means the film as a whole sucks.

I was propped and ready to buy Training Day because of the possible keepcase, but in a mag I saw it advertised with the snapper, so I was a little torn. In my collection, my dvd keepcases out number my dvd snappers by a long shot. I don't figure it will hurt to add one more snapper to my collection. So, I will pick up Training Day as a blind purchase.

For the guys thinking about buying this blind and asking for other opinions...wouldn't it be faster to look up some reviews on the net instead of asking on a message board and waiting for people to respond? There are thousands of on-line movie reviews that could probably give you a quicker (and more accurate) idea of whether or not this flick is for you.

That said, Training Day is a pretty awesome movie in the tradition of To Live and Die in LA, Falling Down, and Heat, so if you liked any of those, chances are you'll like it.

It got mostly positive reviews and was a fairly sizeable hit when released last fall, so I have to ask...If you saw the trailers and read the reviews at the time and didn't deem it worthy of seeing in a theatre, then why would you want to own it?

Why not ask here anyways? I rather listen to you guys.

Well, I finally watched my "blind" purchased copy of Training Day and I thought the movie was good, but not great. I guess I had built-up expectations of major intensity, especially from Denzel's character, and I just didn't get that feeling.

I do NOT regret buying the DVD and I DID enjoy the movie, and would probably watch it a few more times. Besides, Eva Medez was hot....

The video and audio quality were good, I thought.

Overall, I give this DVD a

Peace.....

ditto. i liked it but i don't think i could watch it again. too many plot twists for the sake of plot twists resulting in a fairly predictable viewing

I agree with tomdkat. I bought it blind also, and while I don't exactly regret it, it'll prolly be a while before I see it again. Good movie, just not the kind I'd wanna see again the next week.

*****SPOILER ALERT!!!!*****

Regarding the dreaded "Snapper"

When Warner Brothers puts out a DVD I want to buy, I wait until I can get it at Hollywood Video previously viewed.

Hollywood rents all of their movies in Keepcase style boxes so studios like WB and NL send them inserts that fit in keepcases.

So when they sell the previously viewed copies, you get the same cover art as the snapper, but in a keepcase!

Cheers.

I rente it first, and I am glad I did. I will eventually buy this, but it wasn't one of the better movies I have seen lately.
