Movies that scarred you for life...

I was just watching an old fave: Friday the 13th part 1. Thinking to myself when I was 6 and this was new I unfortunately had the opportunity to see it peeking over a chair at a sister's slumber party. I had nightmares for WEEKS! And another scene in Creepshow with the zombie dad coming for his cake...

"I waaaant myy caaake...." ACK!!!! more nightmares.

I wouldn't eat cornflakes for years...

I wish horror movies had the same effect on me as when I was a kid and was wondering if anyone else wants to share similar thoughts.

I think the sounds in the Exorcist scared me the most.

Poltergeist freaked me out... especially the clown scene. I didn't even own a stuffed clown and I was afraid to go to sleep at night.

The Evil Dead.

I went to a slumber party at my friend Dave's house in the sixth grade. It was the greatest.

Then they put the movie on. At the time, Sniglet's were really popular, and there was one that defined the person who holds the sheet up to their eyes and then covers them before the scary parts?

That was me, for about three weeks after that.

Se7en. I left the cinema in a state of shock.I had heard nothing about the film prior to seeing it and i was blown away.

I just remember shaking my head in disbelief at the devastating ending and mumbling to my girlfriend, "i have got to buy this on laserdisc".

No film in the 6 years since has given me the same feeling I had after watching Se7en.It still get's me everytime i watch it on dvd although i try to limit myself to watching once or twice a year so i don't flog it to death.

I first saw The Exorcist when I was about 10 and I was terrified. I couldn't take showers with the curtains all the way drawn and had a very difficult time going to sleep in the dark for weeks.

I DID own a clown doll and needless to say I was terrified of it

Open closets or lights on in closets at night would freak me out too

I still don't like it :barf:

I'm a horror fanatic, so I haven't seen anything horror-wise (even in youth) that has SCARRED me!

What scares me is the evil that is man! A movie that has kinda scarred me was Spielburg's Amistad! Good God, those scenes on the boat, the whipping to death of some of the slaves, the starvation, the rapes, the "unloading" of excess slaves (with a rock as an anchor & all of them tied together)! It truly made me cringe. ONE viewing is all I can bare of this film! Breaks my heart & has left a deep imperssion on me!!!

I barely remember Cujo, I vaguely remember the whole movie being in the car... :P

Anything with torture, slave torture, etc. counts.

I'm not sure if I would use the word scarred, but the ear scene in "Reservoir Dogs" and the rape sequence in "Salvador" stayed with me for days after I watched those films.

And of course "SE7EN".

The scariest scene ever put onto film was in Kindergarten Cop, when Arnold's dreaming and he looks out the window and the killer is out there looking at him.

When I was a kid, Empire of the Ants scared the shit out of me. Westworld was another one. After I grew up, only one movie has had that kind of effect on me. Prince of Darkness. On the way home, I had to stop at a friends house cause I was shaking so much...

This may have only been because I had built up some anxiety before I finally watched this movie, but the only movie (not counting when I was a kid) that shook me up was Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This was when I was in college and I rented it after class one day (oh, how I miss the free time I used to have). That scared me so badly that when I walked around the house afterwards and walk past a room with some dark shadows, I would think I would see Leatherface. And this was during the day!

It would have to be:

- The Shining, which shows Jack Nicholson at his absolute scariest, not to mention that flood of blood crashing through the doors of the hotel

- Schindler's List, because of the horror of the Nazi holocaust that occurred in real life was graphically portrayed on film

- the aliens' attack on New York in Independence Day, which the 9-11 attack on the World Trade Center reminded me of, and I could hear the music from that scene in my head when I saw the news reports

- and any so-called "movie" put on screen by that so-called "moviemaker" named Kevin Smith. :barf:

Good thread, loner!

I remember seeing a film in which someone was sinking in quicksand...I think it was BEASTMASTER...I was just petrified of quicksand for many years, even though my Mom assured me there was no quicksand around where we lived.

The opening sequence of "Amityville Horror". To this day, I check and recheck the doors to make sure they're locked.

"POTENTIAL" SPOILERS:

The following movies haven't scarred me for life, but the scenes still freak me out:

1. In The First Power when the homeless lady rises up to the window of the apartment building.

2. The scene in The Others when the kids are in the closet and they see the old lady.

3. The "enhanced" scene in the new version of The Exorcist when the face of the demon appears over the mother's shoulder in the kitchen.... and of course the spider walk.

I think I jumped 10 feet in the air when these scenes took place.

I know what scene you're talking about. It was eerie because the bad guy looked like he was floating towards Arnold too. Man I love that movie. It's on DVD right?

Exorcist I don't think I was right in the head for about a week after seeing this. The devilish sounds of Regan coming from upstairs is what I remember the most.

Poltergeist Jo Beth Williams in her underwear is nice and all, but seeing maggoty fried chicken drumsticks and evil trees pulling kids out of bed definitely gets to you. And how about the corpses in the swimming pool? Lovely.

The Shining I agree, the blood coming out of the elevator and those two girls that appear out of every corner. Whenever I walk through quiet hotels I always think of those images.

Arachnophobia Whenever I saw a couple spiders in my house, I thought to myself "Uh oh, the infestation has begun! I have a Queen Spider in my basement too!" Where's John Goodman when you need him?

The Night of the Living Dead What freaked me out was that you couldn't kill them. They just kept walking ad clawing their way towards you and ate your brains. I even thought the possibility of real zombies in remote towns could be real when I first saw it.

Alright, Alright! But it was because of my age (as most of U). My father was away on business and my mom and I went to go see Return of the Living Dead at night (that's the one that says "Brains!"). My mom's doesn't drive, so to AND from the theatre we had to walk by a cemetary...keep in mind its dark (very few street lights) and creepy as hell! Needless to say, I couldn't sleep alone that night!

This might be corn, but another one that comes to mind is from the Blues Brothers. The scene toward the beginning where the Bros. visit the nun & John Belushi falls down the stairs. At the top of the stairs, the nun says something, folds her hands on her chest & eerily floats backward with this creepy stare! Just something that stuck to me as a kid!

I knew it Riddler!

One of my favourite damn creepy scenes is in the Changeling. When George C. Scott replays the tape from the seance (sp.) and hears joseph's voice...

oooooohhh! scary kids!

Actually most of that movie gives me the willies still. :p

The clown scene in Poltergeist was profoundly disturbing to me when I saw it for the first time at the tender age of ten.

I saw The Exorcist for the first time when I was about thirteen. That was sixteen years ago, and I still haven't seen that movie again in its entirety. Freaked me out something BAD. Unlike the next movie I'm about to name, I would be willing to see it again, as long as it was daylight outside.

While seeing Arachnophobia didn't exactly scar me for life, I will absolutely refuse to see it again. I don't react well to the nearby presence of spiders.

Return of the Living Dead is the only horror movie that scares me to this day. The whole concept of zombies that are able to speak and run (and I mean fast) has never sat well with me. It, I believe, is grimly possible.

But then, I'm also crazy too.

When MGM releases this on dvd I will pick it up.

OK, a sensible answer this time...

I agree with the spider-walk scene from The Exorcist....however I found the version of this scene on the 25th aniversary scene (as a deleted scene in the documentary) far more un-nerving - the way Regan reaches the bottom of the stairs and then starts flicking her tongue affected me more (The new version cuts off with the digital blood)....

...also the subliminal demon's face(s) caught me off guard the first time...as mentioned earlier...

...the opening scene of Jaws has made me nervous of swimming in open water ever since. I still do it when possible but I can not help but think of that music and those events!

AND WORSE OF ALL (and I can see it now....shudder) the sister locked up and chained to the bed in the back room in the film version of Pet Cemetary....this was mentioned in another thread....and I still run cold thinking of this........

Just you mentioning that scene gives me chills I had read the book, but I couldn't picture her, then I saw the movie...then when I read the book again, those scenes were so much worse.
And I really never thought of Jaws, but now that I see it mentioned...yeah. A few months back, I was snorkeling, and the music just popped in my head. Here I am, swimming with the fish and I'm thinking shark! Not a good idea.

That whole film is just filled with freaky stuff. That scene, the one with the woman in the kitchen, or the kid who was playing with the gun...

Glad (?) you agree.

What makes this scene even more effective/chilling is the fact that :

a) I've only ever seen it once - when it first appeared on VHS
b) the ONLY thing I can remember about it are those scene(s) - the face / the spine etc etc
c) I thought the film as a whole was poor, but those scenes did their bit!
d) Not a lot usually freeks me out like this
e) Other people I know that have seen this film/scene don't understand my fear of it - I absolutely refuse to watch it again!

Arghhhhh, it's 1:45 in the morning here in the UK in a dark house by myself and I now feel very "cold"! They say you shudder when somebody walks across your grave, well thanks to the above memories I now feel somebody is dancing a jig on mine!
