The Mothman is here...

I notice "The Mothman Prophecies" has just got a release date.

As I live in the U.K. it has only just got a cinema release here I was wondering what this film was like.

Also (due to living in U.K. as well I guess) I did not know anything about this subject until a week ago, but with the release of the film there has been some articles in newspapers about "The Mothman" and the apparent events surrounding it, and I must admit I'm very intrigued... I am even considering buying a book or two on the subject!

Anybody seen the film and wish to comment on whether it's a worthwhile purchase/viewing?

I saw this in theaters and I have to say ot was pretty good. I really enjoyed it, there were a few things they could have done maybe a little differently. Other than that I thought it was an excellent film.

You never really see the Mothman. That was my major beef.

Yeah, and because you spelt it wrong, I didn't know it was a spoiler, and now you've RUINED THE ENTIRE FILM FOR ME!!!

To answer your question, it's a mediocre film. It's worth a viewing...maybe not a purchase.

Ok, I saw this movie and I really thought it sucked, It was good in the begining and it was really boring in the middle, it was average in the end.
It was kind of like a shitty Final Destination (am I the only one who thought this movie was kind of like it?)

I had hoped that the DVD of this movie would be a director's cut or an extended version. I didn't think the film progressed the right way; it spent too much time on some things and not enough on others. Anyway, I still thought it was decent enough... go ahead and see it even if you don't buy it.

If you want to read about the events the movie is based on, the best source would of course be the book by John Keel (which is also called The Mothman Prophecies). But I can give you a basic description if you want.

I know about the various eye-witness accounts of the so called MOTHMAN, and the finding of the slaughtered animals, and the bizarre lights in the sky.

I have also read about strange premonitions about 46 people dying in the water - and ten the bridge collapsing....

...is there more interesting stuff to this or does the above event pretty much sum it up?

(Don't worry about spoilers - as I say I'll probably buy book(s) on the subject anyhow!)

The Mothman was seen by over fifty people in dozens of separate sightings in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. It appeared mostly in Nov-Dec 1966 but sporadically throughout 1967 (I think the bridge collapsed in Dec 1967).

The interesting thing is that the witnesses' descriptions were almost always identical. Mothman was supposed to be humanoid and tall, having wings (with a ten-foot span) instead of arms and glowing red eyes each two inches across. When it walked, it shuffled and kept its head low. It took off from the ground by shooting straight up and could easily keep up with speeding cars (it had a tendency to chase them). Its ability to fly seems to preclude the idea that it was someone dressed up. An identical creature was seen in around 1960, and similar sightings have been reported elsewhere. But of course, no one was ever able to take a picture of it.

I haven't heard anything about animal mutilations happening in that area at that time, but the Mothman encounters were accompanied by many UFO sightings (yes, one person claimed to have seen Mothman and a UFO simulataneously), and some Mothman witnesses said they experienced "poltergeist" activity in their homes.

For those of you who have already seen the movie, I should mention that "Indrid Cold" is a "real" figure in UFO lore. He was first seen at the beginning of Nov 1966. A man called Derenberger was driving home to WV from Ohio when a spaceship landed in the road in front of him. A man came out and identified himself as Indrid Cold; he grinned constantly (the grinning man is a common feature in alien encounters), somehow speaking without moving his mouth. Cold asked Derenberger a few simple questions, mentioned that he himself came from "a country much less powerful" than the USA, and left. But Derenberger claimed that Cold visited him other times and sometimes brought others from his planet. Several people did report seeing UFOs near Derenberger's house. Derenberger even claimed that Cold took him to his home planet, a place called Lanulos. (Interpret this story as you will.)

We do see the Mothman in the movie, briefly, at the beginning. (An actor was credited with playing Mothman; I don't know what they mean.) I don't think they showed Mothman much because it was supposed to be some sort of energy phenomenon and not a real creature. Still, people thought they saw it, and it would have been nice to hear of a few more sightings in the movie.

According to the reports and articles in the UK press here, farm animals (horses mainly) were found to be slaughtered with "strange perfect incisions made to their throats"...

...also the reports say that all witness' to the Mothman were overcome with a strange unexplainable fear, some were paralised with fright, others hysterical.

It sounds like the book is far more interesting than the film, I do not usually tend to believe in things like this but I must admit I am quite intrigued...

...maybe it's the fact that (apparent) new footage of the Loch Ness Monster was shown on UK TV today...

I'm glad they didn't. It makes him/it more mysterious. I mean, look at Jeepers Creepers. That movies was pretty good until they showed the creeper, and from then on, it just sucked royale ass. Anyway, I really enjoyed this movie and will definitely get the DVD.
