Disney "animal wave"

Is Fox and the Hound, Robin Hood, and Rescuers Down Under getting re-released on July 23? Does anybody know what type of edition they will be. Robin Hood, Rescuers Down Under, and Fox and the Hound are already available in the Gold Collection. Any info would be helpful. Are there any specs on Great Mouse Detective yet?

No re-releases are planned. Perhaps price reductions?

Regarding Great Mouse Detective, check the link in my signature...it has a list of all the Disney classics and their DVD specs.

Those titles that have already been released look like they'll just be price reductions to me. Anyone else agree?

Only other thing I can think of is repackaging or some kind of re-promoting deal.

They mentioned that The Fox and the Hound was getting its first ever DVD release, which is not true (I have the disc). The one that's out now has a 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The IMDB lists the aspect ratio as 1.75:1 and the DVD as being pan and scan. However, the packaging claims that 1.33:1 is the theatrical aspect ratio.

Does anyone know what the OAR of this film really is? Hopefully the new DVD (if it's a new one and not a repackaging) will have the correct aspect ratio, whatever that is.

This review notes the discrepancy between IMDB and Disney's own packaging. Given that the studios are pretty good at labeling discs as being modified to fit the TV screen (it may even be required now) I'd go with Disney's info.

In addition, I remember reading somewhere that Disney didn't start using the more common WS ratios until Oliver & Company, and even then, the OAR was 1.66:1. The problem was that it was difficult and time-consuming to compose animation for wider frames when everything was done by hand. If I'm not mistaken, Disney didn't move to 1.85:1 until The Lion King, and they pulled back to 1.66:1 again for Hercules, at least.

Of course, The Black Cauldron, A Bug's Life, and Atlantis were done in very wide ratios, but they're exceptions.

Disney features were created in 1.66:1 for a while before that.

My laserdisc copy of "The Rescuers" (1977) is 1.66, and the "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" (1971) and "Pete's Dragon" (1978) DVDs are 1.66.

I've never understood why "The Fox and the Hound" was 1.33:1 - ever since "Lady and the Tramp" (1955) and "Sleeping Beauty" (1959) were made, the OAR fluctuates between 1.33 and 1.66.

"The Black Cauldron" (1985) was the first 2.35 film since "Sleeping Beauty", after which ALL films were printed to film at 1.66:1. They were then, including "The Lion King" and more recently "Hunchback" and "Tarzan" matted further to 1.85:1. This is why "Hercules" is 1.66:1 - for video directors John Musker and Ron Clements prefer the slightly taller ratio 1.66, while others prefer the more "film-looking" 1.85.

All in all, this means that we should get "The Great Mouse Detective" in 1.66 at least!

I'm guessing that this will be a box set featuring the new release "The Great Mouse Detective" bunched along with the already available "Fox & The Hound", "Rescuers Down Under", and "Robin Hood".

I haven't heard anything about the latter 3 getting a new treatment, but I should would love it. I wish they would put the original "Rescuers" in it though.

I just got off the phone with Buena Vista Home Entertainment. It is price drops. Disney is doing a new line of DVD's and only one title will be released per year. The only two she mentioned to me that I cared about was "101 Dalmations" and "The Lady And The Tramp".

She did mention:

Bambi, The Lion King, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin, and thats all I could remember.

I did ask about the "Monsters, Inc" DVD, she said it will be awesome. They are making it up to us for keeping it delayed to the public.

So in summary, no new release for "The Fox and the Hound" or "Robin Hood"

UK, I stand corrected. I'm actually not surprised about Pete's Dragon and Bedknobs since they're partly live action, but I had thought that The Rescuers was 1.33. As for Fox, its ratio may just have been the personal choice of its director, just as Musker and Clements prefer 1.66 even though most Disney films are now 1.85 or wider. (BTW, I think Mulan was also shot at 1.85.)

Well if you believe conspriacy theorists, we didn't land on the moon.

But hey, I didn't know if the platnium info had been released. She acted like it was top secret news. And I never saw it released in the news section on here.

:flush:

Last October, Snow White was released as the first of the Platinium Titles. This October, Beauty & The Beast will be released. As far as I understand it, this is the release schedule:

2001: Snow White
2002: Beauty & The Beast
2003: The Lion King
2004: Aladdin
2005: The Little Mermaid
2006: Bambi
2007: Cinderella
2008: Lady & The Tramp
2009: 101 Dalmatians
2010: The Jungle Book

Of course, this is not set in stone and subject to change. The Lion King and Aladdin have already switched places since the list first came out. Originally, Aladdin was slated for 2003.

Okay. From what I've heard, this "Animal Wave" is going to be a promotion that Disney is going to be putting on for about a month. "Fox & The Hound", "Robin Hood" and "The Rescuers Down Under" are to receive price drops. There will also be promotional things in the stores and in the parks highlighting things to do with animals. Not sure what yet. Anyway, that's the latest I've heard.
