Hunchback Of Notre Dame: What's with all the grain?

Considering that the movie is less than six years old,the ammount of grain and blemishes on the new Hunchback DVD is almost appalling. The laserdisc transfer was gorgeous, so what's the deal? At least the DTS sounds great.

It looks to me like Disney have dropped the ball recently with there transfers or rather the quality control, hasn't there been some digital blemishes with a couple of recent releases? I read some people complaining about them in the recent Tron and Peter Pan releases...

You got that right! Check out this list of glitchy releases in chronological order, most of which I have personally confirmed. These are not player problems, as most of these glitches affect a wide range of major DVD player brands and models.

Snow White
Will not play on XBOX and many PCDVD players (CORRECTED REPRESSING AVAILABLE FROM DISNEY)

Atlantis (both CE and normal releases)
27:24 MPEG blocking (numerous players, CORRECTED REPRESSING AVAILABLE FROM DISNEY)

Tron CE (CORRECTED REPRESSING AVAILABLE FROM DISNEY)
38:16 MPEG blocking (numerous players)
1:07:05 framing errors or discoloration (Sony players)

Peter Pan SE
42:53 MPEG blocking (numerous players)

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (CORRECTED REPRESSING AVAILABLE FROM DISNEY)
1:04:05 Severe Combing at layer change (numerous players)

Hunchback of Notre Dame
30:18 MPEG blocking (numerous players)

To report errors to Disney call the # on the DVD itself, or go to:

maybe that's why Disney started the "Guaranteed" program? they knew the first pressings were bad, and started the program to replace them.

I read somewhere (probably on this forum) that Disney isn't quite following all the required DVD specs, and that's why they're not using the standard DVD logo. I don't know how true this is, but considering the complaints that are arising (though I haven't experienced them myself) it might be true.

As for the Hunchback DVD, I didn't notice that it looked bad, but I didn't do an A-B with the LD.

Apart from video quality, I'm put off that they didn't see fit to include more extras, given that they already had a boatload from the LD box set. Those extras include three deleted songs sung by the cast (with optional commentary by Alan Menken and Steven Schwartz), two story reels and a presentation reel (all with Menken and Schwartz singing), a much better multi-language reel, and a lot of layout and character artwork.

I do like the commentary track on the DVD, though. That's very nicely done.
