Let's get ready to rumble: Hunt for Red October vs U-571
Ok, which sub movie is more intense and why?
******** SPOILER ALERT ************* If you have NOT seen either of these movies, rent or purchase them BEFORE reading this thread! ![]() *********************************************** I have to go with Hunt for Red October since EVERYONE was trying to find and sink Red October, except for the U.S.S. Dallas and I just thought there was more tension in Red October. I think BOTH movies ROCK (not counting historical accuracy in U-571), but I give the slight edge to Red October. And you? ![]() Peace.....

Definitely Red October. I enjoyed the intelligence community aspect of it, as well as the political elements of the story. I also find it far more quotable:
"Next time, Jack, write a g**damn memo!" Although I did like U-571. My old roommate and I saw that in the theatre, and then we went and played Axis & Allies. Great recipe for an evening when there's no girls around.

I have to go with U-571.
The overall realism of the movie (the facts around the decoding machine aside), made it seem more intense to me. But that's not taking anything away from Hunt for Red October....I thoroughly enjoy that one too.

Red October, by a LONG shot, IMHO. The performances were second to none. The story line was first rate...and C'MON...IT's SEAN CONNERY!!!

Hunt for Red October. I love that movie. U-571 and Crimson Tide were enjoyable but not in the same league IMHO. However, lets not forget that the best submarine movie ever is Das Boot.
I don't own Red October yet because I was under the impression that the DVD isn't among the best (poor transfer, no extras). Am I wrong? Is there a special edition on the way?

CRIMSON TIDE does indeed blow both out of the water (I've never had the pleasure of seeing DAS BOOT, because I'm holding out for the original 6 hour version), but of the two offered, I voted U-571, if for no other reason than its kinetic energy, which is completely lacking from the well-acted, but totally plodding and sluggish, RED OCTOBER...

Thanks for the feedback guys. For those who mentioned Crimson Tide, I also like that movie VERY much and for me I thought it was about as intense as U-571 so I consider them to be about equal.
Keep in mind that I don't think any movie is "better" than the other, only that Red October was more "intense" for me. I own all 3 movies and will have "sub marathons" where I will watch Red October (LD), then Crimson Tide (LD), and U-571 (DVD). At the end of this marathon, I'm usually pumped up and looking for the phone number of the US Navy.... (Of course, I then come to my senses and realize I'm not military material and spin more DVDs..... )I have NOT seen Das Boot yet, but it IS on my list of must see DVDs... Peace.....

I voted for Red October... U571 was mearly ok in my book, Crimson Tide was ok as well but my favorite sub movie.
Das Boot - more of an audio experiance than a video one. A gritty war movie that glorifies nothing. Cramped conditions bad food just all around feeling of danger for the seamen...... The line from the captain telling the photographer to wait until the crew grew beards before taking pictures... says a lot about the whole movie. Brilliant film.... great disk. |

I'm holding out my opinion on HFRO vs. U-571 (I've seen the former, I own the DVD for the latter, but hasn't been viewed as yet)

The two of them combined can't match up to DAS BOOT...not the films and not the DVD's...

German (Dolby Digital 5.1), English (Dolby Digital 5.1), English (Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround), Spanish (Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround) I hope the lack of a DTS track doesn't dissuade you from owning this. Quite a few audiophiles have pointed out that this DVD has one of the best audio mixes ever heard for a war film (that's saying a lot)

I agree, Red October is the one. Crimson Tide I rate second followed by U-571. All quite good though. The first 2 just happen to have 2 of my favorite actors also with Sean Connery and Denzel Washington, so maybe that's unfair.

I also voted for Red October.
I remember when it came out in theaters and home video. It even had a 8-bit Nintendo game. I don't think Crimson Tide or U-571 ever had a video game to accompany them. Red October 4 life. (no NWO pun intended) |

Chalk up another Red October.
Crimson Tide is a distant second, with U-571 an even more distant third.

easy pick for me...Hunt For Red October!!!...I'm still waiting for Paramount to reissue it as a Anamorphic SE
Crimson Tide is a great sub flick too....is it even on DVD? I don't recall seeing it around...probably needs to be upgraded as well knowing that it's Disney/Touchstone/Hollywood film from the mid 90's. Das Boot obviously sits at the top of the list of Submarine thrillers we all live in a yellow submarine..yellow submarine..yellow submarine........... ![]() |

I agree with Istagi.
I really didn't like the historical INaccuracy in U-571... it was the British who broke the code... and for the movie to play like the Americans did, and then to mention this alteration by stating the real facts at the end ... well it loses some points for that. But outside of that... I still think that RED OCTOBER along with CRIMSON TIDE are above U-571. Which has very good sound and a enjoyable story... even if inaccure. :-) Great idea... watching these SUB type movies!! |
