Movies that have aged

i wanted to start a thread on movies that are dated. Here are a few

Psycho ($40,000 for a house)
Friday the 13th (now they would pick decent actors)
Saturday Night Fever

I'd have to pick anything with Anthony Michael Hall...look at 16 Candles
Jaws
Airplane
and anything that was made in the 70s and takes place there too.

One of my favorite movies, Excalibur, has aged. The special effects are beyond dated and look extremely cheezy now. It's weird how some movies made previous to Excalibur have aged much more gracefully. I think I've read somewhere that Excalibur was made on a shoestring budget, that may explain a lot.

The movie that first comes to mind is The Eiger Sanction. It's a horribly aged pile of crap from 1975 directed by and starring Clint Eastwood.

Great score by John Williams, though...

The Star Treks haven't done well, neither has most of the SciFi genre excepting Star Wars and the first two Alien(s).

Bad 80's flicks are fading fast. Flashdance, Dirty Dancing, Police Academies, Real Genius etc, etc.

Star Trek takes place in the future.. in space. How can it age?

Oh, yeah, Shattner's had several toupees since then, but....

Almost everything prior to about 1977. People seemingly couldn't act back then, it's all like children at a school play with maybe a couple exceptions. All of them aged, impossible to watch.
Take a look at Get Carter, the original, for example.

I'd probably agree with you more if you had said the exact opposite.

The Andromeda Strain

I think the reference to Star Trek is in reference to the original series. I love ST but you have to admit the series is aged (e.g. switches, dials, and tube computers in the 23rd century). The movies have done a little better though. The first one is definately aged but classic. Wrath of Khan is aging much better as well as most after that.

As for the sixties acting style, that was the acting style of the time. The performers we have today grew up watching those shows and have definately been influenced by them. In 40 years people will look at what we watch now and probably say the performers couldn't act. You have to remember to examine these things in the context of the time they were created.

I think another reason for the Star Trek reference may have to do with the timeline. According to Wrath Of Khan, clones are supposed to be relatively common by the point we're now at in history.

There's also the fact that STNG looks so good. Yes, they're different timelines but ST looks dated. And hokey.

Are you refering to Star Trek the TV show, or Star Trek the movies with the original cast? If you mean the TV show, it's most certainly dated however Gene was dealing with a limited budget and the hairdo's a mini-skirts were the fashion of the time.

The movies however are timeless. There isn't too much said or shown that reveals the date the movie was made. Other then Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home where they travel back to our modern San Francisco.

The Wizard with that kid from the wonder years.

A big 8-Bit NES commercial. In the days of X-Box, PS2 & Gamecube, I doubt this would promote a lot of interest anymore.

"And now presenting...Super Mario Bros 3!"....oooooohhhh

Another one just "popped in there"...

Superman III - Those programs Richard Pryor was supposedly "hacking into" in the beginning were mere Commodore 64 looking programs when U typed the 'LIST' command.

Pryor's Boss: "How Did U Do That?"

Pryor: ........... (with a dumb look on him).

Those were the days. I remember watching that over and over again to see if I could find more secrets in SMB3. Is that on DVD yet?!?

If you're referring to the movies (other than the distinctly '80s post-apocalypse-meets-Venice-Beach wardrobe donned by Khan and his followers), methinks you judge too harshly...

I watched ST the Movie last week and didn't think it stood up well. I can't put my finger on the reasons why though. The effects were SOTA and well done and I always did like v'ger. Maybe I'm just tired of the cast.

The costumes always bugged me, although I did like the movie itself, mostly.
Also, Robert Wise seemed a strange choice for directing Star Trek... He's an immensely talented director, but his films, for me, lack warmth. (The Andromeda Strain & The Day the Earth Stood Still are two examples which come to mind... very good movies, but very cerebral versus emotional.) Under his direction the characters stiffened considerably...
Contrast the chilliness of ST:TMP with the follow-up Wrath of Khan... Even the costumes are symbolically attuned to this: The muted cool Greys, Blues, etc. of the first film were replaced by the burgundy tunics we've become familiar with...
