This may be bad news for you, George McFly. I check the Randy McNally Road atlas and I looked for Hill Valley, CA on the cities and towns listing.

Hill Valley is a fictional town. I'm sorry.

Roseanne will console you I'm sure :p

coming from a lifetime BTTF Fan (they are arround) Hill Valley only exists in Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gales immagination. In fact downtown Hill Valley is nothing more than part of Univerals backlot and the courthouse was used in the 50s tv show leave it to beaver as Wallys High School. I always thought that San Dimas in Bill and Ted was made up but its real, ive been there they do have one of the most excellent water parks ive ever been too with the exception of Wet and Wild in Orlando FL

Dave hit the nail on the head. The outside of Marty's house (a set was used for the inside shots) does exist, somewhere in LA I believe.

also a interesting tidbit BTTF was filmed at the same time as Disney Channels The New Leave It To Beaver in the same downtown hill valley set so the production of BTTF had to take down the courthouse clock face/ statues, and the columns in front so Disney could film the high school shots. I wonder if they used it again for the new movie that came out a few years ago.
PS I never thought id see all of us McFlys in the same thread at the same time, sorta like a 'family reunion'

Yeah, that "downtown" is a part of the stupid Universal Backlot Train Tour or whatever it's called, at the Universal Studios in burbank, and the "main street" was used in Gremlins as well.

the Hill Valley courthouse was also used as the high school exterior in the TV series of "Weird Science."

Marty's high school is actually the Nixon high school in Whittier, California which is about an hour or so outside of L.A.
