Special Interest DVD's (NEED HELP PLEASE)

Hi there, I am going to be teaching Film History and I want to start buying some Hollywood / Film History DVD's. I was wondering if I could get some help on what titles would be great that would help me. I am not looking for an actual movie title. I need something that is a Special Interest or Documentary title. I have a few and have yet to order them. If anyone has any input on these titles please let me know.

"The Movies Begin - A Treasury of Early Cinema 1894-1913" - that is a 5 disc set. $70-80. Looks really good. 133 uncut, restored films.

"20th Century FOX: The Frist 50 Years"

"AFI's 100 Years, 100 Films"

"AFI's 100 Years, 100 Stars"

"50 Years: The Best of Hollywood"

"Goldwyn: The Man & His Movies"

Again, if anyone can think of any other titles that could help me I would be grateful for it.

Get 'Citizen Kane'. It includes a fascinating documentary about the making of the movie, and it's impact. And of course the movie itself is great.

A Personal Journey With Martin Scorcese Through American Movies is pretty solid. Lots of eclectic choices and great insight from Mr. Scorcese.

Try :

Treasures of the American Film Archives. . . it's another 5 DVD set. . . . I'd probably compare that set with the Movies Begin Set, and pick one to buy.

dvdfile did a special on silent films a while back, but they've restructured 3 or 4 times since they did it and i can't find the article any more. but. . . it listed a couple anthologies of early early silent movies that sounded great. Lumiere/Edison type stuff. . .

I would recommend That's Entertainment, but it unfortunately hasn't been released on DVD yet.

I second the nomination of "Citizen Kane." The second disc has a great documentary about Kane's role in movie history.

You also can't go wrong with pretty much any Criterion Collection disc, although that's not really what you're looking for.
