Films you fear will never make it on to DVD

I was thinking about this yesterday, and was wondering if there's any films that people think will never make it on to DVD. For me, I think things like Married..... With Children and Cheers won't ever come out.

Normally I'd fear no such thing. If the market is anything like VHS, there will be opportunities for everything. Blockbusters, indie cult films, 50's nudist colony flicks...

That said I'm worried about ED WOOD. I heard that the reason it hasn't shown up on this medium yet was that it was on Divx, under a contract that said it couldn't be released to the rival medium. I hope someone fixes that soon...

Here's a few films I think will probably never see the light of day on DVD:

- Superman II Special Edition (with all of the lost Marlon Brando scenes and other scenes directed by Richard Donner before Donner was fired and replaced by Richard Lester, though some of those scenes made it to the extended TV version)
- Superman IV (the complete 134-minute version)
- Schindler's List
- Grease
- Saturday Night Fever

Now as for what should have never seen the light of day on DVD to begin with:

- anything by those pitiful "moviemakers" Trey Parker :barf: , Matt Stone :barf: , and Kevin Smith :barf:

- Freaks and Geeks (TV): definately fear this great TV show will never get its first (and only) season released on DVD. I loved this show and was devastated when NBC cancelled it . I heard A&E was trying to put together a DVD but that didn't pan out. the music rights issues alone might prevent this from seeing the light, as each episode included several classic songs, mostly from the late 70s, early 80s.

- Undelcared (TV): see Freaks and Geeks, but substitute NBC with FOX.

- Death Spa : nuff said

- Trust : love this Hal Hartley film, unlike DVD distributers

- Lost Highway and Wild at Heart : I'm actually pretty hopeful these will get released. Not sure exactly when though.... soon please!

- Hoop Dreams : perfect documentary

- Paradise Lost: The Child Murders of Robin Hood Hills : see Hoop Dreams

- The Thin Blue Line: see Hoop Dreams

- Short Cuts : not sure what the hold up is on this masterpiece

- Repulsion : I'd love to see Criterion release this great Roman Polanski film. Seems unlikely though.

- Palookaville : never saw this film, but would love the opportunity

- Laws of Gravity: see Palookavile

- Living in Oblivion : oblivion is where the plans for the DVD seem to exist

- Krush Goove , Beat Street, Breakin' , and Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo : need more early hip-hop culture movies on DVD!!!!

- Glengarry Glen Ross: I keep hearing rumours, but keep getting disappointed by a lack of foreseable release.

- Freaks: another title I'd love to see Criterion do

- Day for Night, and Blow-Up: see Freaks

I could keep going, but I'll stop for now

Hi,

There is a horror movie from 1972 called The Other about twin brothers: one evil, one good. Great movie. It never made it to laserdisc, and I hold out very little hope for dvd. I have the VHS tape. I work in an A/V section, and we are planning to buy a dvd recorder. This will be the first movie I record! I think it will be the only way to ever get it on dvd.

Others I am STILL waiting for are all Warner titles that I have on laserdisc, but would rebuy if they had extras:

-All the Barbra Striesand films (What's Up, Doc? imparticular, and as mentioned by someone else)
-Wait Until Dark..
and most of their older, vintage titles. They took centuries to get them to laserdisc, so I guess it will take just as long for dvd. What is wrong with them??

Saturday Night Fever IS coming out this year, but Grease is STILL tied up in legal music rights so I hear. Eventually we will see it, but who knows when. The LD goes for MAJOR bucks on ebay!

Mostly everything else that is odd that I want has been released, so I guess I am lucky.

Thanks, and have a great day!

Chris

The one movie that I can think of never being released and want on DVD is:

Three o'clock High

I love this movie!!!!.....It's basically film school in one movie. You gotta love all the camera moves...lol.

Oh yeah....great fight scene at the end

Too bad my copy on VHS is about finished. Release it already!!!

Peace out:thumb

Nothing!

With my Mac's "Superdrive" and a DV camcorder, anything I can find on tape or LD can be converted to DVD. Quality might not be so great... but, hey...

Space: Above & Beyond - the one-season FOX tv show in a box set of all uncut episodes...

Kolchak: the Night Stalker - the series episodes in a one-shot boxset...

Thriller - either two seperate season boxsets or one large boxset to go with my The Veil boxset

any Abbot & Costello features that haven't been released yet - most importantly Hold that Ghost, Who Done It?, ...Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff, ...Meet the Invisible Man, ...Meet Dr. Jeckyl & Mr. Hyde, and Time of Their Lives...

The Ghost & Mr. Chicken - a classic Don Knotts thriller-comedy. The organ music playing in this still creeps me out more than those crappy Haunting, House on Haunted Hill, and Thir13een Ghosts remakes...

a full anamorphic widescreen edition of Private Eyes - a thriller-comedy with Don Knotts and Tim Conway...

an anamorphic special edition of A Fish Called Wanda with an audio commentary with John Cleese, Kevin Kline, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Michael Palin...

The Missionary with Michael Palin...

an anamorphic special edition of Scream...

and the following tv series on DVD in season-based boxsets: Night Court, Three's Company, Knight Rider, and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.

BWilliams, what is your problem? Why do you feel the need to CONSTANTLY bash these filmmakers every chance you get? You don't like them? SO WHAT! We know, already!!! You've posted the same statement numerous times. Time to give it a rest.

Back on topic, I'm worried about the following not making it to DVD:

-BLOODBATH AT THE HOUSE OF DEATH (a great horror parody starring the great Vincent Price)
-BETTER OFF DEAD (IMO the best John Cusak movie)
-I know there are others, I just can't think of them right now. I need to go through my very small vhs collection...

I thought that Better off Dead already had a release date. It's listed in Amazon as coming out July 16th of this year.

Mine are mostly horror.....

Fright Night II - I don't feel complete without this one in my collection.

Phantasm II & III - Both under Universal....c'mon Universal.

Cemetary Man - Michele Soavi's horror classic starring a very young Rupert Everett. Great love scene where he's lickin' some girls' cooty at a cemetary!

Their movies are not fit to watch, period. Truth is truth, facts are facts. If the truth bothers you, I'm sorry, but that's just the way it is. Let's leave it at that.

You're saying your opinion concerning certain filmmakers is actually truth/fact? Sorry, that sounds a wee bit delusional.

I'll second Song of the South, for sure.

Night Gallery eps

SNL with the original cast in box sets (I like that E! is repeating 60-minute versions of the shows, but thos entertainment headlines they throw at the bottom of the screen really steams my clams. "Excuse me, this is television history. If Liz Taylor is selling her wedding gowns on ebay, I can wait until 8 or later to find this out. Leave SNL alone!)

Battle Royale (I believe it's omcing out in R1, but I'll believe it when I see it)

Orca (come on! A killer whale with a vendetta against Richard Harris! Jaws 4 basically is a ripoff of Orca, which was a ripioff of Jaws!)

I'll also second Phantasm 2 and 3...someone call Anchor Bay, stat!

Electric Dreams-probably another movie that'll be a music rights nightmare

A Polish Vampire in Burbank

Piranha II: The Spawning

Napoleon

oh, & bwilliams' comments on Parker/Stone & K Smith are like mosquito bites: ignore them and they'll stop being so goddamn irritating.

I think they are called.

Mr. Boogidy

The Bride of Boogidy

I think they are Disney movies from a long time ago. I would even be happy with VHS versions of these movies. But Laserdisc would be way better.

Has anyone else heard of these?
