This, an unrated Last House on the Left, Return of the Living Dead SE -- when the hell did MGM get so cool?

They've gotta do something to top the incredible string of things they've done recently...just look at the Terminator and Usual Suspects Special Editions. I can't wait to see what great new cover art they use for the Escape From New York Special Edition later this year. Hopefully they'll just use the original poster art for it.

MGM, you get:

for this one....

The cover looks great. I don't know anything about the film.

Hey, that IS nice. It still makes me miss the original poster art, though. Maybe they'll include it on the insert???

For a comparrison, here's the last VHS rerelease artwork.

The film is one of Carpenter's lesser known works. It's not up to par with Halloween or Escape From New York, but its a good B-horror film with good atmosphere and more Carpenter score. It's got alot of great faces in it including Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis, Hal Holbrook, Janet Leigh, and alot of well-known character actors who's names you can't quite remember.

This is one of my favorite horror movies of all-time. It's fantastic and HIGHLY UNDERRATED!!! I think a lot of people have never even seen this film. I remember seeing it in the theater with my dad and it scared the hell out of me!!!

I have it on Special Edition Laserdisc, which still looks pretty good, but I am sure I will be breaking down and buying this. Does anyone have the specs on this? The cover looks sweeeet!!!

The laserdisc had a commentary with John Carpenter and Debra Hill, television spots and an outtake reel ... I hope we get much more on the dvd!

Well, if you own the LD, you might be a bit disappointed. It looks like the supplements are pretty much directly ported from the LD, with the exception of the isolated score track. However, I do believe that the transfer is new.

Actually, I was going from memory on the extras ...

The laser also has the isolated score track and the theatrical trailer. Other than the cool cover, it looks like it is directly imported from the laser ...

I'll have to watch it again to see how the picture quality is ... this might not warrant another purchase, but thanks for the info

This is a lost classic, and an eagerly awaited release for me...
I own the laserdisc, but with a new transfer, a new documentary I´ll buy it ... Let´s hope there is a new commentary and it would be great if they had put the score on this too.

Now Let´s bring out Escape from New York SE...

They live and Prince of darkness are coming later this year and Carpenter has made a commentary with Roddy Piper on They live...

I´m a happy man

Cool cover on the fog release, hope they put the original on the inside...

I remember when I was in college my friend Tiffany and her friend Jeff used to talk about "The Fog" and how bad it was. One time it was on Monstervision and we all watched it, and we couldn't stop making jokes. It was slow and silly, and it took itself way too seriously... 'Oh those aincent pirates coming out of the fog... Creepy.... There's Barbeaubot running and screaming from the offscreen smoke machine... Watch those titties shake... Shouldn't we be watching "Swamp Thing" to take advantage of the view?...

Later that year, I wrote a paper on Carpenter and rented everything he had done up that point (this was pre-Ghost of Mars but post Vampires), including the SE LD of "The Fog." I thought maybe that the cropping had renderded the movie terrible, as had happened with Prince of Darkness (although I still couldn't sit through all of that even on the LBX Image DVD) as Carpenter uses scope extremely well. Maybe TNT had made Joe Bob groan over all the cuts they had made from the R rated version, as he would so often mention the pointlessness of watching certain movies on the network. But no, it was the same stupid piffle just in 2.35 and with a little more (ineffective) violence. Now as I have made clear in many other threads my favorite kinds of films are horror movies. I also love bad movies. "The Fog" is both, but its not bad enough to be funny or ambitious enough to be an interestingly egotistical failure. It's an utterly pointless piece of celluloid. It manages to do nothing to the viewer on any level, rendering it one of the few entirely ineffectual horror movies.

It may be one of the few films (like Tron) that is better viewed under the worst circumstances, pan and scan VHS preferable. It can't allow itself to be outclassed by the presentation or it collapses under the weight of its outstanding and emphatic mediocrity.

So you didn't like it Disco Stu?

This movie is not even close to the piece of sh!t that you make it out to be. I have seen plenty of crappy horror films in my day and this ranks up there as one of the best, not the worst. I'm not even that big of a John Carpenter fan and I would say this ranks up there with Halloween.

I think someone needs a nap ...

So I just read at dvdfile that there is a NEW 28 minute documentary included as well as the featurette from back in the day. Neither available on the Laser ... then add in the new anamorphic transfer and the low $19.95 ticket price (I'm sure cheaper elsewhere) and this one warrants a purchase afterall ... can't wait !!!

I've been waiting for this flick for ages!
Saw it on TV once when I was about 12 or so and it scared me shittless at some point.
Can't wait to see it again on dvd.

I stand by its unentertaining shittiness, as opposed to the entertaining shittiness of They Live and Big Trouble in Little China. Assault on Precinct 13 and The Thing are his two best however.

The Fog is only good if you make fun of it.

Oh, and I recently had a nap.

Okay Stu,

I think you've made your point. I think though that your energies would be better spent though contributing to another thread of discussion than continuing to trash a film that a number of people DO happen to enjoy, either as a campy light horror film or as a serious scare-fest. While we can all safely assume that this disc won't be on your high priority or low priority buying list, there are a number of people who (myself included) have eagerly been awaiting this announcement. The only reason I even started this thread was to show people the cover art, which, while not the original poster art, I felt was better than a number of the photoshop half-face hack jobs that seem to be used for cover art these days (ala the video release).

I'm not trying to convince those who already like the movie. To each his own. And I would have left the thread alone if there hadn't been all of the off-topic praise of the film. As you said, this was a thread about the cover art. I felt equal time was necessary, as it would be if a whole bunch of people were dissing a film and someone came to its rescue. Oh and the cover art is better than the video release, so I'll give MGM credit for that.

The Fog...

...highly recommended.

I usually don't start threads just to praise a disc, but I felt I should this time.

This is the best I've ever seen The Fog look. That, coupled with the ol' commentary being included and a new half hour doco makes this a must have for any Carpenter fan. Go pick it up.

(Plus, after all these years of watching the very average UK VHS, I can watch The Fog without cringing at the horrible matte covering Hal Holbrook's surprise entrance in the church. It's all but invisible now.)

Lo Pan,

We'll merge this in with our existing "The Fog" thread.

Thanks for posting.

And I am all over this title tomorrow.

just a few more hours and it will be mine.. all mine...!

"the fog" is one of john carpenter's most technically perfect films, from the direction to the cinematography and score. the story is supposed to sound like an old-fashioned campfire story--thus the old-fashioned campfire story opening! there is a great deal of restraint in the amount of gore shown, although it is bloody by early carpenter standards. most of the gore in the film is hinted at by the great horror sound effects. there are many genuine scares in the film, and it is right up there with the best zombie movies.

I thought Disco Stu's review was amusing. It brought a smile to my face. Come on guys, we can have some disagreement on the threads can't we?

But anyway, I haven't seen all of THE FOG. I read the movie-tie in book as a kid because I thought it had a cool cover too.:p I'm really looking forward to picking it up and seeing it as it was meant to be seen. I'm a huge Carpenter fan...(my faves are "Halloween", "Christine" and "They Live") and so I'm looking forward to sitting back and enjoying this finally from start to finish.

Also, I've got chime in on all the support for MGM. They've been marvelous all year, releasing so many titles and so many awesome special editions like "Mad Max", "Blue Velvet" and "The Last Waltz"...they are absolutely on fire right now...cheers for satisying the DVD consumer. Someone over there really cares.
