What are your favorite DVD menu screens?

The Phantom Menace - all three of them.

Terminator 2 - interesting levels.

Men In Black - really captures the mood of the film.

My favorite menu screens, without a doubt, are on This Is Spinal Tap - the MGM Special Editon. Hysterical!

Agreed, very funny. That is the one DVD that the total package, film, special features, menus, etc. all make me love the film even more. It also has the best commentary track I've ever heard.

Its such a treat to have a movie with a nicely designed menu. Some of my favorites are:

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil - with kd lang singing skylark it expresses the tone of the south so well and along with the way the camera moves around to the statue and the way the wind blows on the tree and the speed of the film, simply wonderful.

Rebecca - Criterion Collection - subtle, but oh oh oh so affective.

Donnie Darko I love the sound of thunder in the back with the landscape. Its simple but sometimes I have it on and the sound is so soothing. I wished that the thunder could go on longer before it loops again.

Summertime - Criterion Collection - The background is Venice and it is beautiful in those wonderful technicolor.

Moulin Rouge - if you have it, you know why, if you don't then for goodness sake rent it at least.

Gladiator - beautiful and atmospheric. The music is wonderful!

Austin Powers The Spy Who Shagged Me - Psychedelic and FUN FUN FUN!

Elizabeth - Beautiful and lush. I love how they show the each character eyes and they fade into the other character's eye.

The Matrix - for those of you who do not have this film, aamm the menu kicks arse, just in the same way as the movie does!

The Sound of Music - Beautifully designed with wonderful sound of nature. This is also a good one to leave on and just listen.

Spartacus Criterion Collection - bold and affective.

Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace - All three menus!!! Don't need to say anything about this one.

Well there you go. These are some of my favorite things.

The new animated menus for the R2 release for Farscape (season 3) totally blow away any animated menus for previous sci fi releases...including the old R2 (seasons 1 and 2) and the R1 releases of Farscape. I actually just sat and watched the entire montage like four times when I put the disc in, it was that cool!

The first time I watched Requiem For A Dream I had to check to make sure I got the right disk. After I had watched the movie, and knew what the "theme" was, I thought the menu screens were brilliant.

I am worried that Memento and Harry Potter are going to get me posting I prefer static menus. IMO menus should be cool, but not an adventure game on the level of Myst.

Requiem for a Dream

Abyss

T2

The Cell

From Hell (although the deleted scenes font is way to small)

Bond menus

Planet of the Apes

Spy Game

fancy menus are nice and all, but I prefer static menus which play the score all the way through like Apollo 13 and other old Universal titles.

funny but I find Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace kinda of basic.

The first two ALIEN movies have interesting menus...

the newer BOND films are fun...

TERMINATOR 2...

on another note I miss LDs... sometimes these menus can be annoying waiting through animating and stuff (.i.e. CAST AWAY)... I just want to go to something else! With laserdiscs... you put them on... no selecting sound or wanding though trailers, menus.

With laserdiscs it was just a DOLBY DIGITAL, DTS or THX trailer and the movie started... just like the movies.

Don't get me wrong... DVD menus are fun the first time... but alot wear thin. Unless it like APOLLO 13 where you have the complete score on it.

Cheers :-)

Mine is Walking with Dinosaurs... now that was different. All the cute little dinosaurs roaming around. And the individual episodes are cool too. having the backdrop with the shadow of the main creature... really cool.

Favorite DVD main menu screen?

My favorite menu screens are those that have motion and sound.. where you can just leave it on the menu and it repeats endlessly.. here are some of my favorites..

1) Jaws: video of the ocean and the buoy.. sounds of ocean surf and the 'ding' of the buoy. Pure enjoyment.

2) Castaway: video of the highest point on the island looking down at the beach.. sounds of wind, seagulls, and the ocean..

YES I LOVE THE OCEAN! CAN YOU TELL?

3) A Fish Called Wanda: video of Wanda in a fishtank.. sounds of a fishtank. Who needs pets? You don't even have to feed her!

4) Amityville Horror: video of the house with flashes of light in the windows.. sound of the VERY scary theme, rain, and shotgun blasts going off... (My all time favorite scary movie)..

5) Ghostbusters: video of a virtual city.. sound of traffic and the theme song..
