Which multi-disc sets are the best to own??

Since I am starting a collection, I want to know which two or three disc sets are the best to get. I mean like Gladiator, From Hell, Cast Away, The Others, dvds like that...which ones are the must get and must own titles? I haven't seen Brazil, for example, but I am inclined to get the Criterion editon of that film. Is that movie any good?? Just curious to see what multi-disc titles you all have in your collections that I may want (I still am looking for that two disc Halloween set!!!).

Rent any film that cost more the $15 before you buy it. That is sort of my mantra. Brazil is cool, but even though I'm a big Gilliam fan I didn't like it as much as his other films and have some what put off buying the set. It is a great set though.

For 2-disc sets, you should get Fight Club, Se7en, Citizen Kane, Moulin Rouge, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and a bunch of other cool ones...

Come on people! Godfather! It's an offer you can't refuse.....

(Criterion's Brazil looks great, but it's damn pricey!)

I will admit, even with five discs, the Godfather Trilogy is an excellent selection, though I don't have that one in my collection. I've debated about
getting that one for a while.

Other good multi-disc sets to get:
- Star Wars: Episode I (THE standard for all of the other Star Wars films to follow on DVD)
- Gladiator (to quote Spicoli, "Awesome! Totally awesome!!!")
- Star Trek: The Motion Picture Director's Edition
- Snow White Platinum Edition
- The Abyss SE
- Akira SE
- Cast Away
- Terminator 2 Ultimate Edition (the 2-disc set qualifies here, though they also have the DVD-18 of the film)
- Metropolis
- The Fantasia Collection
- Toy Story: The Ultimate Toy Box (this one is a real must have!)

And of course when they are released:
- Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Director's Edition
- Beauty and the Beast Platinum Edition
- Monsters Inc.

I Agree with most of the one listed above...

I'll Add:

Armageddon Criterion
The Doors
E.T.
Independance Day
Minority Report
Speed

J.

(added: I agree with those who have said to rent first as well. Also the post below says that it's all about the movie - that is a BIG Amen!)

I would highly recommend you rent some of these first before laying out your hard earned money. Ultimately, it's about the movie. So, if you end up hating/disliking the movie, then its not gonna matter how great the extras are, or how impressive the presentation is.

That said, most of the ones listed so far are real good choices.

This is so damn true. Make sure you know you like the movie, not just get it becuase it's a "collector's edition". I have the first release of Pearl Harbor, but I'll never get the Vista Series edition cause the movie just plain sucks ass.

BUT, a very good movie and specal edition relase is the Canadian 3-disc set of Brotherhood Of The Wolf. Extremely cool movie and threre's 2 documentaries that are more than an hour each. And the movie has a deafining DTS track.

Just a quick note: As some of you know, a few studios have taken lately to dropping the two-disc sets in favor of single-disc releases at a slightly lower price. Fox has been at the forefront of this "movement," reducing The Sound of Music, Cast Away, The Abyss, Patton, and others to a single disc. Moulin Rouge is next, with a single disc version to be released this month.

I've also seen a few single-disc titles from Columbia, including Lawrence of Arabia and Close Encounters. I don't recommend buying blindly or getting movies you don't like, but if you want a specific two-disc set, get it while you can.
