Is Brazil Criterion worth $45 as a blind purchase?

Hello, I am concidering getting the Brazill CC set but since I have never seen the movie and doubt the local Blockbuster has any version of It I was wondering what you guys think of the film and features.
Thanks for the help.

I love the film but I know a lot of people who don't. If you like any of Gilliams movies chances are you'd like this one. It's a great set as well, the extras are well worth it...

I personally love this film. Its brilliant!!! There's so much to see in this film and that makes each viewing a treat.

Maybe this will be helpful:

If you liked "Baron Munchausen", "Time Bandits", "Twelve Monkeys" and "The Fisher King", then you will LOVE "Brazil" and this set is the best way to go.

Contains Gilliam's full length "director's cut", a disc full of supplememtal stuff, and the Universal "happy ending" studio cut.

Never before has the film process been so extensively rippped apart to show what goes on between artists and moneymen.

Ironic, then, that these themes are touched on in the movie itself!

Yeah, how do you feel about other Terry Gilliam flicks?

I've seen Brazil before buying the CC, and knew I'd love it, so I think it'd be hard for me,or anyone else for that matter, to advise you on the subject.

Unfortunatly all I have seen by him is Monty Python and the Holy Grail, cant really compare the 2...The description of Time Bandits interests me too and its cheaper too, but Brazil has the better features.

I'd say "no" since a lot of people are split on this movie. I personally didn't care for it although I did enjoy Monty Python and 12 Monkeys (although I'll probably never watch it again). I'd find a place where you can rent it first if you're really interested. Make sure it's the director's cut though.

There is a movie only version out there which I've seen at my local Blockbuster... might be worth checking out before splashing the cash.

Rent it first. I like Gilliam's other films, but for some reason I've never been able to make it through Brazil.

i bought brazil: criterion blind as well... i don't think you can really compare it with python. subtlecynicalhumour. maybe its not for everyone, but i think it was an excellent purchase... i think its also the most 'complete package' for a film as well, but i guess it helps that the film had a 'history' -- i have to admit though, i have never watched the third disc / 'love conquers' all version. i did plan to though... jus tnever got around to it.

It's one of the few DVD special editions I have where I watched all of the extras (over the course of about five days), and one of the few discs where I've watched some extras more than once. Even if you're not the biggest fan of the movie, the meticulous documentation of the making of the film (which had a turbulent and controversial history) makes it worth the price, I think. Too bad it's not anamorphic, but it's still worth the price.

$45.00 for a movie you never saw? I would not do it. But then again I never saw the movie. So I would not know about how good or bad the movie is. I saw the trailer & it was pretty bad.

Best. Disc. Ever.

If you love film you should not miss this. The director's cut is the only "real" version of the movie and is only available on this set.

the extras, as pointed out above, are the best ever.

and besides, if you really don't like the movie, I would be willing to bet you can sell this fantastic set on ebay for at least half what you paid for it, and you'll be richer for having the experience.

Again It's one of those love it or hate it flicks. Personally I think it's brilliant, one of, if not my favorite film. If you buy it and don't like it don't worry, open copies of this puppy sell for at least $40 on eBay, so you'd just be out the cost of renting it. Actually since I haven't had the extra $40 to buy the DVD (I have the same set on laserdisc-and that puppy cost me over $100:rar: ), why don't you buy it and if you don't like it sell it to me-off eBay-no fees and it would go to a really good home!

That's not exactly true. It turns out the Universal release of "Brazil" which came out before the CC DVD set, is also the director's cut. The running time on the label is wrong by about 11 minutes. But the CC version looks better, though still not anamorphic.

I finally broke down and bought it! It cost me about $75CND so it wasn't to bad, although I still wish it was cheaper then that. But it is 3 Criterion discs, which kick ass! So anyway, I still recommend seeing it first, just because it is so polarising. If you see it, and like it, buy it when you have some money burning a hole in your pocket.

Is it true that the CC of Brazil is NOT in anamorphic? Is it in 5.1 or would that really not affect the viewing of the movie I'm just curious because I have been considering it as a blind puchase as well.

I don't have it in front of me, but I KNOW it's not anamorphic (its only drawback), and I'm pretty sure it's in Dolby Surround, NOT 5.1. But hey, that's the original soundtrack, so that's cool by me. IMHO, if we're gonna be sticklers about OAR, we should be purists when it comes to original audio soundtracks as well. 5.1 is nice, hey, it's great, but if it's not what the director envisioned...

I'm not that obsessed with anamorphic personally. I don't have a widescreen TV yet, and it is a pretty good transfer anyway (miles above the VHS and laserdisc versions...).
