Mary Poppins Reissue??

I would like to see other fans views on the Mary Poppins dvd. I think it is one of Disney/s worst. Though the dialogue recording in Disney films was terrible, the music was well recorded and this shows in the dvd, but the picture is one of the worst dvd pictures in my collection. No 16x9, tons of film grain, I think that the laserdisc looked better after a comparison. The dvd was obviously taken from different elements, while at least the laserdisc was consistant in quality. Then to blow it up on my Sony vp11ht projector, well, I can't even watch it. On the laserdisc, Disney included an isolated music track (score only, no vocal). Where is that and what must be a wonderful vault full of extras (including the 10 minutes cut before release), a commentary with Julie would have been nice too, plus all of the reissue trailers. I would hope anyone interested has been writing to Disney at Disney.com, this is one of Walt's best achievements and deserves better. Walt would be appauled!

Yours is not the first dismal review of the MP Dvd. I don't have MP (& it's killing me not to) but I won't do it until they release a new edition that does this classic justice.

I had the original Mary Poppins dvd as one of my selections from the now-legendary "3 DVDs fror $1" sale at 800.com back at Christmas 1998. I took the chance to upgrade to the new Gold Collection edition to get the couple extras they had with it.

I don't have a very high-quality setup (25" low-end Magnavox TV purchased in 1993) so the picture quality issue doesn't affect me much... but I would also like to see better attention paid to this movie. However, I can't see Disney revisiting it. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think they don't see it as commercially viable compared to all their animated pieces. (Not only is it not animated, it's pushing 2.5 hrs, which is darn near the length of two kid's movies these days.)

I am waiting to see if this will be reissued. Its a wonderful film. So many fun characters except for Dick Van Dycke. He got on my nerve but still is funny. I like Dick but for some reason that accent just seems bad.

The laughing scene with the older man is so funny. There are so many good scenes in the film. I also love the servants especially when they run to position when the cannon was being fired.

I am definitely waiting on this one. Fortunately there are many other discs that I want to so I have some distractions while I wait.

I hope a better edition comes along one of these days.

the movie is a classic, and the "Feed the birds" song used to always get to me.

The video is certainly not on par with the recent Vault Disney releases and Mary Poppins is certainly deserving of Vault Disney treatment, as it is undoubtedly one of the greatest live-action Disney films from Walt's lifetime. That being said, the Gold Collection's 5.1 mix was a lot more active than the 2 Vaults I have watched, I was pleased with that. And the few extras that were on the disc - the making of, Hollywood premiere, and trailer were all entertaining. It is worthy of better DVD treatment, certainly, but I didn't find the current Gold Collection disc all that bad. You want bad - look at another Robert Stevenson film from the 60's - Blackbeard's Ghost. Now, that's an awful looking (and P & S) DVD with NO extras.

I think I've seen this cover already, but the details and DISC fronts are new to me:

Quote:
Title: Mary Poppins
Starring: Julie Andrews
Released: 14th December 2004
SRP: $29.99

Further Details

Disney Home Video has announced the new 40th Anniversary release of Mary Poppins which stars Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. This new two-disc special edition will be available to own from the 14th December, for around $29.99.

The film itself will be presented in 1.66:1 along with a brand new Disney Enhanced 5.1 mix, a Dolby Digital 2.0 Original Theatrical Mix and a Dolby Digital 2.0 Enhanced Mix.

Extras on disc one will include an audio commentary with actors Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke, Karen Dotrice and composer Richard Sherman, a feature that enables you to jump to a song of your choice and finally some Poppins Pop-Up fun facts that display during the movie.

Extras on the second disc will include all-new animated short entitled The Cat That Looked At A King which based on one of the chapters from the original series of Mary Poppins books, a deleted song “Chimpanzoo” which is reconstructed using the original storyboard and concept artwork and accompanied by a new rendition of the song performed by co-composer Richard Sherman and a Magical Musical Reunion featurette that reunites Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke with co-composer Richard Sherman as they gather around a piano and reminisce.

Next up will a fifty-minute making of documentary, a Musical Journey with Richard Sherman featurette in which the composer looks at some of the film’s locations, two Scene Deconstructions, a special effects featurettte, a Gala World Premiere feature and a Dick Van Dyke make-up test.

Completing the package will be a wealth of publicity trailers including the original and re-issue ones, some still galleries and an interactive game in which you can test your Mary Poppins knowledge. We've attached the artwork below:

good call clemato.
It was supposed to be issued earlier this year,
after the Alice in Wonderland reissue, but took a bit longer.

Very excited about this one actually.....

It got held back so that they can tie in with the stage musical opening on London's West End this December.

The new short is what I'm REALLY looking forward to!
