Any word on King Kong?

One of my favorite classics was on TCM today, and, after searching IMDB, I discovered King Kong is not available on DVD in Region 1. WTF is up with that? Is there a release planned in the near future?

I have no idea if/when a R1 will arrive so I picked up the excellent R2 release.

It's currently undergoing a full restoration by Warner (like they did with Citizen Kane) so it's going to be while, but the dvd will be released when the restoration has been completed

Thanks, that's great news -- the job they did on Citizen Kane was truly spectacular!

Maybe they're waiting to piggy back on the release of Jackson's King Kong...

Or not... Jackson's is a Universal release. I think they are just taking their time to do the best job possible (that film was in pretty sorry shape) and when it's ready, it's read.

Last I heard was maybe in 2004, but that may have just been a rumor.

In the HTF chat last year, the rep made mention that KK was undergoing restoration for its 60th Anniversary (2003), but wouldn't actually be out until this year.

However, they may well hold off until Peter Jackson's film to tie in with that - would be summer 2005.

Whatever, it should be well worth the wait - and it IS happening!

As much as I would like to see this in my collection today...it would be silly of them to release it any other time except to coincide with Jackson's King Kong premiere.

Actulally, it's slated for December 14, 2005, which would be winter 2005. Unless it's summer in the UK then, which it probably is, in which case you'd get it as a summer release. Hmm?

Not if they use the transfer that was on the King Kong/Son of Kong Turner LD. That is the nicest transfer I've sen of the film, especially the previously deleted scenes that were re-instated. On the Criterion LD, theses scenes were taken from a markedly inferior print, but the Turner LD was from a complete print that still had the deleted scenes in it. That version shows no drop off in quality of the formally deleted scenes. If you've only seen this film on TV, and haven't seen the deleted scenes of which I speak (Kong chomping on natives, grinding them underfoot, and carelessly tossing non-Fay Wray women over his shoulder), you are in for a treat!

Nope, UK is in the northern hemisphere, and therefore has the same seasons we do.
