What DVDs did you decide to rent before you bought?

What are your most notable DVDs that you rented first but then had to buy a copy for yourself?

My most recent:

Memento
Traffic
A Knights Tale
Almost Famous

The only ones I can think of in my collection are
  • Boogie Nights
  • Requiem For A Dream
  • Titus

Amazingly, I actually do manage to make it to the movie theatre to see the films I end up buying on DVD.

Ditto. If I rent them, usually seeing the movie once is enough for me.

These were the ones I rented which I went and bought afterwards:

The Talented Mr. Ripley
Titus
Me Myself I
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
Romance

When I first purchased my DVD player, I used to rent many films. I would watch a movie every night. It was fun. The listed DVDs were purchased as a result of those rentals. I haven't rented since September 2001.

I try and see as many movies in theaters as I can. But there are some that slip by that I end up renting. I mean, I really do like to rent before I buy. Such as with these:

Requiem for a Dream
Ghost World
Basic Instinct
Reservoir Dogs

Rarely, if ever. I usually know when a DVD is released if its a buy or a rent. If I'm not sure, I usually wait until it comes out on pay-cable before I decide.

Here's my system: If I see a really good movie at the theater, I'll buy the DVD when it comes out. If I missed it in the theater, but still want to see it, I'll rent the DVD first, then, if I enjoyed it enough to watch it a second time, I'll eventually buy it. I don't know how much money you all make in a week, but most people can't afford to buy any movie blind. I only buy blind if:

A.) The movie is dirt-cheap (Under Fire).

B.) I'm a big fan of the director (Obsession, Hard Eight).

None really. I guess Chasing Amy but it was because i had no money to buy the expensive DVD (also non in stock) and Dogma (waited for SE of the movie) but everything i bought without renting. That was about 1 year 4 months ago i think.

I often do this but it'll be hard to remember which ones. What I generally do if I'm not 100% sure I'd want to own is rent something when it first comes out, then if I like it I put it on a wishlist and buy it the next time I get the urge to watch it.

I did that with Close Encounters even though I had seen the film, I hadn't seen this particular version nor had I seen any version in years so I wanted to be sure.

Am currently awaiting the urge to see Man Who Wasn't There again because I LOVED it when I rented it.

Some others:

American Beauty (sorta.. I saw it on PPV first)
Bubble Boy
Cider House Rules
Apollo 13 (received as gift 2 years after renting, lol)
Misery (rented Polygram version, bought MGM version)
L.I.E. (rented rated VHS cuz it was out early, bought unrated DVD)
Malena (rented VHS)
Rushmore (in this case I loved it so much I bought it immediately)
Unbreakable
