Exorcist- The Version You've Never Seen Question?

Was this version released on DVD yet? I went to amazon.com and it says "This item will be released on July 16, 2002. You may order it now and we will ship it to you when it arrives". I never really saw this movie but i heard its the scariest movie ever.

Also, which version is better? The "25 Anniversary" or "The Version You've Never Seen"

And whats the difference between the two?

Yes, it was released over a year ago. Amazon is probably out of them and are expecting more copies then, or it could be a price drop. Amazon has done this with numerous other titles, and I have to wonder if it could be a ploy to get more titles listed on their "coming soon" list.

I haven't seen TVYNS (which means they're not lying to me on the cover ), but the general consensus seems to be that the original is better. If you get that one, make sure it has the words "special edition" at the top of the case, as that disc was done much better than the original release. Actually, you probably won't have to worry since the original thankfully went OOP when the SE was released three years ago.

I own the 25th anniversary edition on DVD & I think it looks great [of course, I don't have a home theater in my home like many others on this board do].

However, I would assume the "new" version would have equal or better audio/visuals. But, the original cut of the Exorcist is superior to TVYNS in everyway a movie can be IMO.

And I believe the DVD is cheaper too.

Go here for a list of differences between the two versions of the film:

I've seen both versions of THE EXORCIST on DVD, and I have to say that as far as picture and sound go, they're both terrific. But the original version is a LOT better than the newer version of the film. Some of the scenes in the newer version, like the "spider-walk" sequence, are just silly; the newer versions conclusion is totally pointless.

But, bear in mind that I like the original versions of the STAR WARS trilogy much better than those bogus "Special Editions"...I could (legitimately) be accused of being a purist.

Re:

If you are looking for better a/v, then TVYNS is the best. It offers a DD EX track while the original is just 5.1.

But my opinion is that the 25th version is better. You get a better cut of the film (I think all the added scenes are in the deleted section on this disc) and you get a huge documentary. Plus picture and audio are great. So this one is the clear winner.

Yo,

ALL of them are OOP. Even the 25th Edition and the Version No One Ever Seen.

All of them are out of print.

Actually, I believe the 25th Ann. and the original crappy release are out of print.

The Version You've Never Seen is just receiving a price drop. MSRP is being lowered to 19.99.

the 25th Aniv. version has more special features, and a more in-depth and livelier commentary by Friedkin.

The Version You Never Saw has a new commentary, but since Friedkin had to so it again, it is a rather dry and redundant one. (He simply describes what's happening on screen mostly.)

My suggestion would be two rent the "VYNS" and buy the 25th as a keeper, if you can find them. It's just my opinion that you'll get more enjoyment out of the 25th Aniv. whereas the VYNS is actually missing a lot of the features.

I have to agree with what everyone else is saying. The VYNS has better audio/video, but the 25th anniversary is a far better disc in terms of content quality. (Also, I've seen two different covers for the 25th anniversary disc, one with "Special Edition" across the top, and one without it, but I think they're the same disc; as long as it says "25th Anniversary.")

As everyone else has said, the 25th Ann. version has a better version of the movie, the terrific documentary, a better commentary from Friedkin, another track with some commentary from William Peter Blatty and some sound effects tests, and some extended interviews with both Friedkin and Blatty.

Hope all that helps.
