What's your favorite STAR TREK show

Okay, what's your favorite version of STAR TREK, and which one would you like having complete DVD sets of?

I'm not a huge Star Trek fan, but I enjoy the original series the most. Gotta love Shatner.

I'll watch pretty much anything Shatner does. Good, bad or indifferent, the man's ALWAYS entertaining!

Shatner's hammy overacting make the original series the best.

No question. TOS takes the cake. I have watched every episode of every Trek series produced thus far, when they first aired, and I loved them all, but nothing will ever compare to the sheer fun factor of watch Kirk and company seek out strange new worlds. As good as they are, most of the newer series (with the possible exception of Enterprise) have an undercurrent of somberness that TOS did not suffer from.

I got into Trek through The Next Generation. I still have a fondness for that show. Sure, there was no character conflict between the crew members, but that allowed the writers to focus on concepts.

However, over a long period of time I need character conflict to keep me interested - Deep Space Nine delivered. It still had Gene Roddenberry's Human Starfleet - but they were put in situation's Picard and Kirk's crews never encountered.

Classic Trek is interesting from a historical viewpoint, but everything after Deep Space Nine is basically worthless.

DS9 is by far my favorite, it had a continuing story arc, which is something the other trek's didn't (well Enterprise sorta does, but it’s not a very good one). I found that the universe in DS9 could change, while in the other series it was pretty much always the same. You knew that by the end of the episode Picard/Kirk would save the federation, and in the next episode everything would back to the way it was, almost as if it never happened. But in DS9 things could change (like when they had to abandon the station to the dominion).

Bottom line is I found the story in DS9 far more interesting, than in TOS, TNG, or Voyager. Of course my favorite show is Babylon 5, so maybe I'm biased towards a somewhat similar show

I've watched most of the series (except Enterprise, which is just underwhelming), but my favourite is TNG. It just has the best characterization and really good writing.

DS9 struck me as being too tabloidy. I liked Julian Bashir though. He was awesome.

Voyager had some good moments.

TOS never really interested me, but the movies are quite good.

I have all of T.O.S. on DVD. It is my favorite out of all the Star Trek stuff.

I watched a few seasons of TNG years ago, but that quickly faded for me.

Anything post TNG I have not watched.

I'd like the Animated Series on DVD, that would be great.

Honestly, I have enjoyed each series - except for Enterprise, which I don't watch anymore. But the only one that really had me craving each new episode was DS9. Can't wait for the DVD's.

TNG had a lot of great episodes and they had great characters

But DS9 just had a story arc that was brilliant and great characters

these 2 stories are Star Treks' finest.

I'd like to see Deep Space Nine on DVD the most. It's definitely a series that needs to be seen in order, especially the last two seasons.

TNG is my fav, tho Braga et al. have comepletely dehumanized the Star Trek universe since Gene passed away.

DS9 = boring
V'ger = awful
Enterprise = entertaining (only series I've been able to handle on a regular basis since TNG)
TOS = rocks. fun as hell to watch...and make fun of.

I'm like many of you, TNG is my favorite. While I like and watch almost anything Star Trek, TNG is my favorite of the five series, because I'd watched it from the very beginning and never missed an episode. Now I just need to get off my fanny and get Season 3 on DVD, but that won't be until who knows when, when I can save enough money for it, not to mention Seasons 4-7.

While i admit to liking a good portion of classic Star Trek, I wasn't able to get into it until the movies, partly because I was born the same year as TOS, and my earliest recollections of the series came in watching the reruns during the 1970's. And the one episode the stations kept running over and over was "The Apple" - ugh! But it wasn't until the 1980's when I got to college and the local Fox station here started showing Star Trek each night. And since it's played on Sci-Fi over the last couple of years, and now with the complete series on DVD, I like the remastered versions of the episodes.

My next favorite is a toss-up between DS9 and Enterprise. DS9 was extremely rich with characters and storylines all throughout the series, it felt like a seven-year episode. That was a series that took chances and didn't back down from it - many of the Worf episodes, the Dominion War stories, Garak's mysterious background (and after seven years and Andrew Robinson's excellent novel, we still don't know everything there is to know about Garak, or do we?), Gul Dukat's descent into evil and insanity, the epic space battles that TNG should have had, and some of the most attractive ladies ever to grace a television screen on DS9 (Jadzia Dax, Kira, and Leeta - yowza!!!!!!!!)

Enterprise is running neck and neck with DS9 because of the premise. They've still got quite a way to prove themselves, and they need to start taking more chances with the stories (as in "Shockwave") than teasing the fans with making it sexier and sprinkling profanities into the episodes. But it's a fairly good show. (And after listening to the Enterprise CD and the full version of the theme song, I can now say that I think the song stinks! At least the full version, that is.)

Voyager is, well... Voyager. I watched it, but for some reason I could never get into it like TNG or DS9 or Enterprise, or even TOS for that matter. It just played like a TNG wanna-be.

And I won't even get into TAS. The original Alexander Courage theme was simply bastardized for TAS and should have never seen the light of day. At least they tried.

While I am a loyal fan of TNG, I will have to give the nod to DS9. While TNG had some of the best episodes of Trek ever, DS9 was just overall a better written show. It also was more loyal in many ways to Rodenberry's original vision, and that of science fiction. It really addressed issues of today in the future with thought provoking episodes. Plus, the story arc was great. It made you care about even the bad guys.

While DS9 had some great story arcs (some which lasted for a whole season), I always prefered the roaming starship concept instead of a stationary space station.

I kinda also had problems with DS9 with Sisko being the "chosen one" or emissary. That whole subplot kinda bothered me, along with the entities in the wormhole, which seemed a bit strange. The Cardassian episodes were usually my favorite (with Andrew Robinson as Garak and Marc Alaimo as Gul Dukat), along with their Mirror Universe episodes, which were among my favorite DS9 episodes.

TNG gets my vote as the best Star Trek series, as it had great episodes, and had better villians like the Borg and Q. Yesterday's Enterprise is still my favorite Star Trek episode from any of the series, along with the timeloop episode where Kelsey Grammar made a cameo as the stranded starship captain.

I've only seen TOS episodes on reruns, but never really got into them. At least some of the movies like Wrath of Khan and Undiscovered Country were pretty cool.

Voyager wasn't that good. Got more interesting when Jeri Ryan joined the cast, but there was something that was missing from this entire series. At least the Voyager finale was more satisfying than the DS9 finale. And Robert Picardo was pretty funny as the holographic doctor.

Enterprise mostly blows chunks now. Except for the continuing storyline with the Suliban, most of the first season has been pretty bad. I'd be surprised if this series lasted the full 7-year run as each previous series has.

TOS is simply the best for me though it pales in special effects to what I would rate second best, TNG. I was there for the original run and to this day it remains one of my favorite all-time TV shows. Favorite episode is Balance of Terror, with Mark Lenard as a Romulan Captain going one-on-one with Shatner and Enterprise. Several others such as The Trouble with Tribbles come to mind as very entertaining.

DS9-Only watched it for Kira.
Voyager-only watched it for Seven-of-Nine
Enterprise-haven't really watched it for shit. (But I like T'Pal)

Bones, I want you to find out what killed these Tribbles!

I haven't figured out what keeps them alive yet!

I disagree. While I loved both series, DS9 was less SF and more space drama. TNG had more good thick SF stories. DS9 veered into more war and politics, which was cool on a huge story arc level and as a change of pace for ST. But I'd have to say TNG was much more SF.

MO:

TNG is just awesome. Good characters, good SF, and some great moments.

DS9 is an excellent ongoing story with most of the best characterizations in ST.

TOS has some excellent, original, good SF but was dragged down by the cheesiness and sub par acting.

VOY had some good parts, but it was lacking in a lot of ways.

Enterprise I'm struggling to watch. I just watched the season finale a couple days ago finally and man did it SUCK! The writing is terrible, the characterization is horrible, and the the stories have been sub par. Bleh!

What I disliked about DS9 was the oppressive feel of the whole enterprise (pun intended). Roddenberry's vision was always one of an optimistic future, where money didn't exist and people worked together for a common good. You know: communism.

But DS9 seemed to be the polar opposite, presenting a bleak house on the brink of disrepair. TNG was about exploration, bettering ourselves as human beings, learning and adapting. DS9 was about trying to stay alive.

For me, the original series is too campy to enjoy. I can watch it sometimes, but I generally find it too amusing to take seriously. DS9... well, I've already gone there. Voyager's characters never grabbed me, and my inability to care for them hindered my enjoyment of the show. Enterprise I turned off during the pilot once the theme kicked in, and I've never gone back.

TNG, however, had all the right ingredients. It's one of the best TV shows ever, IMO.

TNG by far. The original comes in a close second if you look at its best episodes. The cheesiness factor only came into play intermittently. Of all the "bad" episodes of the series, though, TOS has the most.

DS9 I have mixed feelings on. It wasn't really true to "Trek" ideals, but it had a very engaging and ongoing storyline, you could really get into the characters, and it was nice to see darker themes for a change. As long as I had TNG to fall back on, I considered this a very good secondary.

Voyager - I've never seen so many highs and lows in a series. When they got it right, they REALLY got it right. With the series premise, how could you not? I don't remember the name of the 2-parter, but the one that had the bad guy from Robocop (Boddicker) as the Captain of the temporal ship....and the "Year of Hell"..some great stuff. But the bad far outweighed the good. I've probably only seen half the episodes in the series because I was eventually so put-off. As soon as Seven came on board I knew the next series would be on the toilet. Seven was good because they wrote her well, but I could see the direction they were taking it...

Enterprise - And I was right. It's a shame that all I have to look forward to now for decent Trek is the movies. I don't care for the theme, but I can see how people would like it. I taped this show (the pilot) and wasn't hesitant at all about taping over it later. The in your face sexual innuendo, incredibly lame dialgoue that tries to be too "hip", luke-warm stories, inconsistency in regards to the timeline...some may be argued but when it's all put together it comes off...to me...as a very cheap, B-grade sci-series that happens to have the Star Trek stamp on it. It's a shame, too, because I love Scott Bakula

Oh well, bring on more TNG DVD sets! Looking forward to the later seasons of DS9, too. Here's my ranking of the series..odd how as time goes by, it seems to get worse:

TNG-
TOS- (the better episodes)
DS9-
Voyager -
Enterprise - :barf:

I agree with most of your stuff gachamann.

I guess another reason I liked DS9 so much is, like you allude to, it was a nice change of pace for ST. It was great to work on another level for a while.

I'll throw in my 2 cents.

1. TNG. This is when I really started watching Star Trek. I loved the charachters and it still has he best Star Trek episodes. I think the biggest plus for me with TNG is Picard. If you look at which charachter has the most screen time in each show (the captain), I think Patrick Stewart is hands down the best actor in the Star Trek Franchise. I also really dig Worf.

2. DS9. I enjoyed the change of pace with a space station vs a starship. I think the show dragged a bit the first few seasons with too much soap opera storylines. When Worf joined the cast and the Dominion war plot kicked in DS9 was great.

3. TOS. Gotta gives props to the show that started it all. They made some great shows with very limiting technology. I just can't get past some of the cheesiness of it and the dreadful acting of Shatner. It is great to watch and make fun of however.

4. Voyager. I couldn't really get into this one as much. It seemed to have one good episode, then a couple of bad ones. I don't think the consistency was ever there. Jeri Ryan was hot though.

5. Enterprise. I haven't seen enough of episodes to make a sound judgement on it. I missed the sea
