if so, which ones do u regret, and which ones do u cherish??

I see every movie I buy beforehand (for the most part). I've bought blind a few times in the past, and they turned out to be worth while.

If I ever dislike a title though, I just trade it online.

Darksim> Why did you put the words "(criterion)" after the Royal Tenenbaums. There is only one edition, so I doubt there would be any confusion.

out of 150 DVDs or so. I'd say only about 15-20% were bought blind. I simply don't feel safe in spending money on films I'm not sure I'll love and want watch multiple times over again. That said, the DVDs that I do buy blind are usually movies that I'd really wanted to seee in theatres but misssed out for some reason or another, or are films I've read many reviews/ essays aboput and feel confident in having them added to my collection. I like to consider myself a fairly good judge of what will be a safe blind purchase (The Royal Tanenbaums - missed it in theatres, love Wes Anderson) or a risky one (Zoolander - love the creative forces behind the movie, but was glad I rented it instead).

I buy movies blind all the time. Nothing is as exciting for me as to pop in a new movie I have wanted to see.

I totally agree, seamonkey. there's an unexplainable thrill from buying a DVD you've never seen. you get more bang for your buck, even if the movie is so-so.

Yeah, I agree... that's why I don't buy movies blind, for the most part. The only time I'll consider a blind purchase is if the movie seems like a VERY safe bet (I've never had a movie that seemed safe enough for me), or if the DVD in question is unavailable for rent but I'm fairly sure I'll enjoy it.

Snake,

That was not necessary. Most people identify Criterions as Criterions, even if there is only one version of the movie available. And you know that.

True, but the same can be said for going to the movie theater. It's not like that is free. Tickets tend to cost around $9 each so two tickets plus babysitter = way more than the DVD.

I don't just buy every DVD or just based on the cover. I hang out here. Buy DVDs people recomend and buy movies that are by favorite directors/actors etc.

Sure sometimes I get a stinker. Last night I watched Mothman, I thought it stunk. I bought it from the various good reviews it received. I'll just turn around and sell it/swap it and get something else.

I cherish all of my blind purchases, I think I have a sixth sense about picking out movies I'm going to enjoy Well, ok, Requiem for a Dream was a bit iffy (excellent as it was, some parts were just too hard to watch, especially at the end)

I have 3 categories of blind purchases:

1) Movies I didn't watch in the theatre because I knew I was going to buy the DVD anyway, and decided to skip it at the theatre -- ie: Jimmy Neutron for me. These I don't mind blind purchasing because I was going to see it anyway.

2) Movies I didn't watch in the theatre because I wasn't that excited about it and/or didn't have friends that wanted to go see it with me. -- ie: Gosford Park for me.

3) "Classic" Movies I have just never seen. -- ie: Doctor Zhivago for me. These I find good purchases, because they are "classics" for a reason.

For me, it's the category 2) movies that give me pause. Sometimes I stand there with the DVD in my hand thinking -- six months ago, you weren't in any big rush to see this -- so why do you want to OWN it?

All & all I'd say that 1 in 5 DVDs I purchase are blind -- and I've had a lot of good fortune.

I buy a fair amount blind. I always think about renting it first but then I think if I pay 6 or 7 bucks to rent it from blockbuster and really like it then I have already spent extra money on it and I won't feel like watching it for a while because I just saw it. In that case I usually look for a good price and buy blind. I have a pretty good idea of what I may or may not like so I haven't been dissapointed much. I read alot of reviews before I buy blind.

Sorry, I just found that behaviour quite odd. It makes sense when it is something that has another release say in another region or another version existing (ie. some criterions have anchor bay eqviliants, like Time Bandits). I was merely curious as to his motivations.

I've bought Waking Life, Mulholland Dr., To Die For, Sexy Beast, Say Anything, PI (it came in the two-pack), Prizzi's Honor, Panic (highly recommended btw), One-Eyed Jacks, Iron Monkey, Harry Potter & The Scorcerer's Stone (I am officially a fan of this series), A Bronx Tale, A Better Tomorrow 1 & 2 and I havent been disapointed by a one of them. I usually only buy stuff that Ive rented or seen in the theatres, but I do make exceptions (i.e. Mulholland Dr.). I have been burned once, and that was when I bought the GoodFellas dvd. Had I known it was a "flipper" I would never have ordered it. I've always loved the movie, but a "flipper" is not worth $20.

IMO a flipper is worth $20 when it has Goodfellas on it! The only reason I sold my old copy was because I knew an SE would be, and has been, announced.
