Y Tu Mama Tambien MPAA Rating

digitalbits.com says that MGM is going to release R- and unrated versions of "Y Tu Mama Tambien," which is weird because the movie was unrated for its theatrical release. I assume the R-rated version is for Blockbuster and all those other video chains that won't carry unrated titles. I can't think of another movie that has put out a more censored video version (actually I can, "Galaxy Quest" went from its PG-13 theatrical release to video PG by sadly dubbing over a few curse words).

I'll have to see the R-rated version first, since I've not seen the Unrated and will not do a blind purchase.

Didn't Requiem for a Dream have an edited-for-Blockbuster, R-rated version?

John Woo's The Killer had a censored, R-rated version as well.

I think a lot of NC-17/unrated movies are released on video in two versions - original/uncut and edited/R-rated.

Original Sin and Showgirls did as well.

The difference between the R-rated version and the Unrated version is probably going to be pretty big b/c there is a lot of sex in the movie (not gratuitous either), so hopefully those of you that are renting the R-rated won't suffer too much. Still the best movie I saw this year.

Actually, Galaxy Quest was rated PG in theaters and had no dubbing done for video release.

And why would you want to do this? Why would you purposefully want top see a censored, made-for-Cockbuster version of a supposedly great film? I must be misunderstanding your post in some way if your are saying that you "have" to see the R-rated version first (???). Dude, just go to ANY videostore other than Hollywood Video or Blockbuster (who pander down to their customers and make horrible assumptions of their preferences) and check out the true version of the film. I see no reason why a person HAS to see the censored version unless you are many miles away from a non-monopolizing video store chain....
Sorry if I completely misunderstood your post, it just seemed a tad weird to me, a lover of filmmakers' true cuts of their films.

With that said, I look forward to seeing this movie as soon as the unrated (i.e. theatrical version a.k.a. the only version that should matter) comes out on DVD. It will likely be a blind purchase for me.

Well see as Block Buster, Hollywood Video and my local video store all only do the censored version. I can not see the UR version with out buying it. And I will not do a blind purchase for it. I've never seen a trailer, a tv spot. I'm just going on cricts words. So I'll have to settle for a censored version and then if I like it a unrated version.

That's right. The movie was originally intended to have a PG-13 rating, but they scaled it back before its release, and if you ask me, they could have handled the "Screw that!" dubbing job a little more carefully.
