Star Trek III Collector's Edition in 2002
The Digital Bits has just received confirmation from Paramount Home Video that the upcoming DVD re-release of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock will in fact be a collector's edition and not a director's edition as with the first two films. That means Leonard Nimoy is not going to provide a revised cut of the film. Hopefully we will get some good additional supplements in this new DVD, like deleted scenes, new featurettes, actor and director commentaries, etc.
I just wonder about Star Trek IV, though, when it is re-released. Will it have the extended prologue shown in European theaters along with deleted scenes and more? With III coming out by the end of the year, I would probably say IV would come out around the first quarter of 2003.

I would never say that I was disappointed with this news. After all, a director's cut doesn't mean a better cut. As long as it has a decent commentary track along with some deleted scenes, etc. I'll be a happy camper. Now of course, all I need to wait for is for 2006 to come along when I can buy a box set of all the Star Trek SEs.....

Star Trek 3...in october!
Just when I had all my "must haves" budgeted, Paramount announces that Search for Spock is coming 22 October.

I've heard that all were going to be SE's too. Not sure if they include the 3 Next Generation films. Anybody know about those? In any case, I have a ST4 & ST6 that will be ebayed.

About 10 to 12 years ago, wasn't there a VHS release of TREK III which had some extras at the end? It was part of a short lived line from PAramount which also included a release of FATAL ATTRACTION which had an alternate ending.
Does anyone else remember this or am I just crazy? |

Actually, frulad, it was Star Trek IV. That tape was part of a special
"Paramount Director's Series". Before the movie(which was in widescreen no less), there was a featurette on Trek IV. That same featurette is on the existing Star Trek IV DVD. Not sure if it will show up on the impending Special Edition DVD, but who knows. To quote Spock, "There are always possibilities." |

I have to agree with Movie Guy. Trek 4 was released as part of Paramount's Director Series. Back in the early 90s, Paramount was pretty coool "Great Movies, Great Prices"...now they seem to be trying to get back on track. For a while they were "Great Movies, lack of Great Features, not so Great Prices

I was holding off buying the star trek movies last year. I figured that they would release a box set when the movies were all out. Of course, that box was is now available. I was about ready to purchase it awhile back. I heard that Wrath of Khan will be re-released as a special edition. I didn't buy the box set. I guessed that Paramount would go back down the line and make all of their movies special editions. I am glad I waited. Between the the original movies and the Next Generation box sets, I am spending too much money to Paramount. I wonder when DS9 box sets are going to hit the market.

woohoo
robin curtis commentary! YES!
I'll take that over the hour of (existing) deleted scenes anytime.... You'd think they would include at least one or two deleted scenes on a 2 disc set, but oh well. |

I rank ST3 in the middle of the pack of the ST films. It's still a bit disturbing to me to see Christopher Lloyd somewhat miscast in this movie as the lead bad-guy Klingon. I love him as Reverend Jim in the Taxi TV series and as Doc Brown in the Back to the Future trilogy, but seeing him as a Klingon just never went well with me. It's also interesting to see John Larroquette as one of the other Klingons before he found some success on TV sitcoms.
Loved the design of the very popular Bird of Prey Klingon ship here, and of course, we get to see the Enterprise go boom!! I'd have to think about whether I'll get the SE for this. If I see a good sale price for the SE, I'll probably pick it up.
