August 6 = Greatest Release Date for SF/Fantasy Ever?

Okay, maybe I'm a little too excited, but seriously look at these titles:

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - Not just a great "Trek" outing, but a great film period.

Clash of the Titans - One of my favorite fantasy films of all time. You gotta love those Harryhausen effects.

V: The Final Battle - Maybe not as good as the original, but it will be nice to complete the collection.

Lord of the Rings - I don't think I really need to comment on this one!

For genre enthusiasts, next Tuesday will surely be a wallet-buster!

I think it's the greatest day in DVD history (well, for me anyways):

  • Hot Shots!
  • Hot Shots! Part Deux
  • Lord of the Rings
  • The Simpsons: Season 2
  • Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan DE
  • Time After Time

My most ever purchased in one shot. Man it's going to be expensive.

I'm waiting for LOTR SE also. I'm generally quite good at holding out. I'm also holding out on BLACK HAWK DOWN and there are dozens more I've waited for like PULP FICTION, GOODFELLAS, BLUE VELVET, and it looks to be paying off.

I've caved before though, PEARL HARBOR...not a stellar, but I couldn't wait to hear it and experience it, so I snatched it up.

Anyway, back to the thread at hand. I'm getting STAR TREK II for damn sure...I've held off on the Trek films also, and it is paying off. (Although I don't want all of them. Maybe half) As for COTT, I haven't seen it since I was 11. I remember enjoying it, but thinking how cheesy the effects were even then. If I thought they were bad when I was 11....then However, they may actually be charming considering all the freaking CGI out there now.

Man that is a great sci-fi day. To bad I won't have the cash to get all that I want.

But I can get a few.

Thank goodness the finances are looking a little bit on the up side for August, because I'll definitely be getting Star Trek II DE and Lord of the Rings next Tuesday, no doubt about those two!

For me the greatest date in DVD history will be Nov. 5, when Babylon 5 season 1 box set comes out.

    Star Trek TNG: Season 5
    Band of Brothers
    Lord of the Rings SE
    Star Wars 2: AOTC

I better get a DVD player for my car because that's where I'm going to be living

The Scorsese collection will include five of the director's top Warner titles, including new special editions of Mean Streets, Goodfellas, After Hours and Who's Knocking at My Door?, while the Streisand set is slated to include such classics as Peter Bogdonavich's What's Up, Doc?, Up the Sandbox and the 1976 remake of Main Event. Both talents will be involved in their respective collections, and with production already underway, watch for more details to emerge next year. As always, stay tuned!

    Interesting...

I have been thinking about Clash but I might rent it first since I haven't seen it since I was a kid.

If I branch into TV I might get V.

I was really looking forward to Wrath of Khan until I found out it was a director's cut. Oh well.

Yup! Lord of the Rings, Simpsons, Hot Shots, HS Part Deux! Its gonna be expensive as hell. But Ill only get Lord of the Rings and Simpsons that week since theyll be on sale. Hot Shots can wait for me to get money since it wont be on sale and itll probably stay the same price for a long time. Clash of the titans I wouldnt mind getting but my cousin has been dying for that movie and hes gonna buy it so Il just see it with him and/ or borrow it whenever I want to see it since we hang out all the time.

September is going to be a BITCH for me though. Two new dvds comes out each week that I want!

A good idea for a new "smily face" for this BB would be a dollar bill with wings.

The changes from the theatrical cut are pretty minor.

Personally, I think the greatest day ever for sci-fi will be the day that a rogue Lucasfilm employee (or ILM employee) transfers the original Star Wars IV, V, and VI THX restored non-special edition films to DVD with DD5.1 and releases them.

    Hmmm...

First of all, if you apply yourself, Warsies have taken it upon themselves to screw Unka George and remaster the laserdiscs to DVD. Look for "Star Wars-The Original Vision", since there will be NO bastardized effects on this disc! Plus, there's a disc of extras!

    Cheeky lot, aren't they?

Second, I was a bit turned off by the idea of a director's of Khan, as well, until I noticed it's a whopping four minutes, with no new scenes added, just a few extensions of old ones. That if you've ever spent a little time with the television cut, you've seen already. I don't know about you, but once I heard that, I thought "Oh. Okay, who cares?" It's not like TMP where they edited out seven minutes (eight minutes too few, in my humble opinion) and put in new effects (I'm not a fan of this usually, but Good Lord, it looks better by lightyears!) On the other hand, since Robert Wise was never allowed to actually FINISH HIS MOVIE, I support this.
Lucas can go suck an egg, once I find that "Original Vision" it's everybody out of the pool for me!

pretty good day for sf indeed...

but, I will wait for the Star Trek films when they are ALL released as SEs as I just have a nagging feeling that Paramount is going to pull something (super SE boxset, with extras never before experienced!). It has been hard to resist this long, but I am sick of getting screwed.

LOTR - gotta hold out for the special set with bookends (so when I get all three they will have there own spot on my shelves). Besides, I know so many people with *cough* lesser *cough* systems (not that there is anything wrong with that) that are buying the theatrical cut and they are already setting up times for screenings at my house.

Doctor Who - The Tomb of the Cybermen comes out on August 6th too!

Doctor Who - The Ark in Space comes out on August 6th too!

Exorcist II: The Heretic comes out on August 6th too! Though listed in the horror genre, this movie borders on fantasy, science fiction and comedy.

You forgot Wolfen - even though it's horror, it's one of the better werewolf movies out there - with The Howling and American Werewolf in London.

    And it's out 8/6.
