OOP DVD Criterions
Can anyone direct me to a link that will tell me exactly all of the Criterion DVD's that are out of print ??
And what the "going rate" is for each disk??? Or would anyone like to just list all of them here on this thread with what they are going for these days??? Peace out |

I don't know about any link, but I decided to compile a list myself for you. The OOP disc list was courtesy of Criterion's website, where as the prices I've compiled are averages from both eBay and Half.com. All prices are obviously in dollars. Certainly eBay is the place to purhcase these discs, rather than half, but I put them in for comparisons sake.
OOP Disc Title eBay Half.com 400 Blows 225 300 Charade 25 30 Dead Ringers 25-30 30 Hard Boiled 45-50 70 The Killer Not listed 300 RoboCop 35-40 30-35 Salo 40 - 275 Not in stock Sid and Nancy 70 80-90 Silence of the Lambs 25 35 This is Spinal Tap 60 - 130 150 Unbearable Lightness of Being 20-25 20 The reason for the huge gapwith Salo and Spinal Tap on eBay is due to the high price not even being bid on, but nearing the end of the auction where as the low price had a few days to go. Therefore I had no idea how to gauge these discs. I'd just assume it would be somewhere between the two prices, but most likely a lot closer to the high price. Also, the average prices for RoboCop WERE cheaper at Half rather than eBay. Therefore if that's the disc you were looking for, definitely compare the two, whereas it's basically a no brainer to go to eBay for these discs. Also, nobody had The Killer up for auction at eBay, hence me not being able to price it. That's the list. Hopefully this has helped more than just you, but everybody else. |

Ummmm....I spent all that time centering the text, and it's all squeezed together. Anyway. The first number is the eBay price, where as the second is the Half.com price. The difference is that the second number has a space between it and the first number rather than a hyphen. Salo and Spinal Tap have spaces between the numbers and the hyphens, but this was only to show that there was a big gap between them. They are the eBay numbers however. The Half price has a space after the second number in that case. If that was confusing, even my explanation, I'm sorry. I tried.

The only reason Salo has a low start is because theres a wicked large run of bootlegs of it... without a white ring, I believe... its a bootleg.
Buyer beware!

They have no choice. They lose the rights to other companies. For instance, MGM has the rights to Robocop, This is Spinal Tap and Sid & Nancy now, while Winstar has the rights to The 400 Blows, and Buena Vista has the rights to The Killer and Hard Boiled. Those companies don't license to Criterion, so Criterion is forced to let the titles go out of print.

Criterion has to license its titles from other studios and they only have the rights for a set amount of time. If the studio decides to license their film to a different DVD producer once the Criterion rights have expired, then the Criterions go out of print. In nearly every OOP Criterion case, that is what has happened (MGM put out their own versions of Silence of the LAmbs, Spinal Tap, Unbearable Lightness, Robocop and Sid and Nancy and Fox Lorver did 400 Blows and the Woo films) As for the story behind Salo, beats me (a little De Sade humor for the kids out there)

I'd assume that they were if they were Criterion discs, but are Salo and Charade any good?
I'm somewhat timid of Salo just by seeing the cover. Charade just looked kinda trippy. I've obviously never seen either, but was interested in renting from Netflix, if they even have them. Just wanted a quick opinion. |

Salo is a waste of disc space... indeed... sickening movie.
Check out the bootleg area of Criterion's site... has lots of info.
