The best spine...seriously
Okay, I think we've just about covered everything. But I wouldn't be surprised if this has already been done. What's the best spine? This is a nod to all of those graphic artists who have to fill a 1x6 area with appealing graphics. "Who cares?" you ask? Well, for one, I do. As someone who designs DVD sleeves among other things, I'd like to know.
Unless you only have three DVDs, then the spine all there is to entice you. Sitting on the shelf with hundreds others, the spine has to grab your attention and say, "Watch me!" What spine does that for you? Why?

I don't like much junk on the spine. The best spine IMHO is a black one with just the title of the movie in the correct font and color. Sometimes I like a little icon of the movie at the top of the spine. Imagine having an entire collection on a shelf where the spines are all matching? When the DVD specs were first decided, the studios should've settled on a
I don't like bright colors on spines, such as the Austin Powers discs have. The Disney and James Bond discs are a virtual spectrum, and sort of define their respective series. I detest bilingual spines such as Alliance discs offer. |

I haven't decided on mine yet, but when I give mine I think I'll give one for single disc width, one for double alpha disc width, and one for slipcases like the Se7en Platinum series which will be high on my list. IMO they are different categories based on the space to work with.
I do like a good spine. ![]() |

Sorry about the screw-up of starting a new thread. Here's my picks for best spine.
se7en (2-disc special) The Fast and The Furious Tombstone (vista Series) Blow Legend (ultimate edition) M:I2 Unbreakable There are others but those are the ones that stand out in my mind, which I guess is the point. |

Boy we really have been to the end of conversation topics and back. But you are right. When your collection is on the shelf, the cover art isn't going to draw your attention and when choosing a DVD, you're basically going on spine alone.
I'm quite fond of the Mulholland Drive spine. It captures a bit of the mysterious feel of the movie. Fight Club is also a great spine.

I'll tell you what I HATE: The bi-lingual ones we are increasingly getting stuck with here in Canada.
Oh, and the SE Basic Instinct that doesn't even identify the movie! And don't get me started on titles where the text is backwards -- Cannonball Run. The title(s) that scream out the most to Watch Me? The Sopranos Seasons.

I can't stand the spine for Happy Gilmore. I understand the reasoning behind the purpose of the thumbnails, but Sandler with a ball in his mouth? What the hell is that? In fact I never liked any of the art on Happy Gilmore. He looks like a dick on the cover too. Did the designer even see this movie? I mean he's only playing because he's getting money for his grandmother. But they try to make it look like Sandler's asshole movie. God help us if the same guy gets to design the cover for "Punch-Drunk Love."

I second that vote to #51.
Brazil CC is a great package with even a great spine. But on the downside, while taking a closer look, I realized to some ass had cut my spine of Gladiator right across the d. I assume it must have been during the opening of whatever box the shipment came in. Please be careful with them boxcutters boys!!! |

I'd have to say The Phantom Menace, but I'm not sure. The Fellowship of the Ring maybe, but it has yet to be shelved (it still stays over by my bed and will until my current obsession with it fades) so I can't really say anything about that one yet.

I like the spines for the Rocky movies. When all 5 are line up, they form a picture of Rocky at the end of #4 when he's holding the American flag.
And as cool as I think SW & LOTR's spines look, on my shelf, they are hardly noticeable. They kind of blend in with everything else.

"X-Files" season box-sets.
The sides with Gillian Anderson. If only my wife would stop turning it around to the David Duchovny sides.

The Royal Tenembaums. When it comes to standing out and saying 'watch me!' you can't beat that pink
![]() The worst are total black with the movie's title in white, sometimes not even the correct logotype. You can't get any more boring than that. Now that I look at my DVD's again, Gosford Park's is nice too, but hard to read at a distance. |

Wow, we've really scraped the bottom of the topic barrel now haven't we?
Lol.I like boxed sets where the spines line up on order to form a picture. Probably my favorite single title spine is The Royal Tenenbuams, is its perimeter looks like a book. Very clever. -Flash

Strange thread, but I'd hafta say my favorite spine is Iron Eagle. Block letters slanting upwards in red, white, and blue. Simple, yet elegant and patriotic.
