i've been interested in getting this (and some other anime) of late, my interrst sparked by the new Jap Tranformers cartoons.

But i'm very confused by it all, slightly differnet titles, boxed sets...Where do i start? Iw ant to get them in order.

Start with the Macross Saga, then the Robotech Masters, and finally the New Generation.

Im not as familiar with the entire video series, where does Southern Cross fit in? Is it even included in the movies or is it only the comic series that has it?

In Japan, there were 3 series: Macross, Southern Cross, & Mosepeda. These series were combined & edited & brought over to the U.S. as Robotech.

Harmony Gold released this edited/combined version on DVD. You can find some reviews of the Robotech discs here:

Animeigo has released the original Macross series on DVD. There's a review of the Macross discs here:

Hope this helps.
