Sex and the City on DVD

a friend lent us his "sex and the city" dvds. i got through one and a half episodes and just couldn't watch any more. besides the weak writing the dvd quality right off the bat is total crap. the amount of grain in the picture is amazing. it looks like walls and faces are made of sand or bedbugs. avoid this dvd set at all costs.:flush:

It depends on how much you like the show. The amount of grain is atrocious, but if you love the show, you'll put up with it.

The other two seasons look much better.

I love this show, I don't know why. I guess I just hang out with chicks too much.

Thanks for the head up! I was thinking of buying "Season 3", because there's a store that sells it cheap (for a box set). Good thing I didn't buy it!

No offense to redshifter, but basing such a successful TV show on it's first 1 and 1/2 episodes is hardly fair. Any show takes a few episodes to find it's feet.

The first few episodes, while ok, were really pretty aimless...it does eventually find it about half way through or so, and the second and third seasons are even better.

It is, however, a show about chics with guy problems. Yes there's nudity and sex, but it's mostly chics dealing with their guy problems. Really funny chics, though, with really interesting problems.

Sadly, the First season does look like pretty bad, video quality wise. Not so bad that it's unwatchable, but it does take some getting used to.

I made it through the entire first season, and I thought the show was fairly mediocre. Not necessarily bad, just nothing special.

I admit I haven't seen the 2nd and 3rd seasons, and I agree that even the best shows often take a little while to get going. This show, however, was pretty heavily praised right out of the gate.

I thought the 12 episodes I saw were mildly amusing, and there were a couple of episodes that I thought were fairly good, but I've honestly seen more insight into relationships and life in general on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

I agree with Dehrian!

You have to like the show first before you can just complain about the video quality. And in my opinion it is not that bad at all. I have all three seasons that are available on DVD and they are very funny and sexy. I overlook the so called grainy picture because of the shows great quality. But ofcourse its a great quality show its HBO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is definitely more of a female show. My wife bought all three seasons and she absolutely loves it while I find mildly amusing. To me its mainly women talking dirty and telling crude jokes.

Get the third season!

I haven't seen the first or second seasons, but, frankly, we're talking about thirty episodes, fifteen hours, not much plot advancement, you can pretty much just pick up the third season and watch it.
I'm pretty much a hardcore movie nut in general but I lean towards action flicks and idiot comedies, cult movies and horror movies. Check my disc collection if you don't believe me.
The third season on "Sex and the City" is hilarious, though. While it is about four women and their guy problems, and frankly, the lead character is an uninteresting cipher, this is mostly about public embarassment and people humorously screwing up, so to speak. It's basically a well-acted sitcom that can be honest.

I suspect the reason it was so popular out of the gate is that this started out as one of those NY/LA shows. You know, a show that you have to live in or be from New York or Los Angeles to find funny. Most of SNL and Seinfeld (which was never THAT funny) are other examples. I suspect the third season is actually when it became a show worth watching for the REST of us.

And what's wrong with that? It's about damn time women started telling crude jokes! We need to equalize the sexes, dammit!

I am confused. If you dont like the show, why did you buy the DVDS.

The show is great and I am a guy so no, it's not just a Womans show.
If you want something more sedate, watched Touched By an Angl.
S and the C hasnt one all those Emmys by a fluke.

The Sex and the City DVDs do indeed have quite a bit of grain on the video transfer, but the quality of the show makes up for it.

If you just started with the first season, you're really missing out on a lot. The jokes get funnier about halfway through the first season, and the 2nd season is even better.

I've gotten through 2 of the 3 3rd season discs, and it's just great!! The one that had me rolling for hours was the "funky spunk" episode. Haven't watched anything that funny in a long time.

I rented them.

Like I said, I found the episodes mildly amusing; just not my thing, I suppose. To each his/her own.

It has been nominated for everything under the sun, and is again this year, but I think it has actually won only one Emmy: last year's Outstanding Comedy Series.

Of course, there have been a lot of shows that have won Emmys when others deserved it more, but that's another, highly subjective matter.

At any rate, like I said, I just wasn't all that impressed with the first season. Maybe one day, I'll get around to looking at the other seasons; I'm just not in a hurry to.

I used to really like this show. But in twoyears of watching these women destroy every meaningful relationship, I had enough. I can only take so many "men-are-pigs" jokes. I watched last week's episode. My god, talk about product placement. Krispy Kreme, AOL, amazon, Weight Watchers, and a slew of books were slapped up there. S&tC is over for me. Oh, well, waiting for Six Feet Under.

point taken, you can't judge a whole series based on the first couple of episodes. but that first episode where they flashed the words "toxic bachelor" under every guy they introduce just wasn't funny to me. ha ha, all men are pigs, or else they are just pussies, so frickin funny. i wonder how long a show would last if they flashed the words "bitch on wheels" under each of the female characters? you had guys making speeches like "sure i fuck models. why fuck the skirt when you can fuck the girl in the skirt?" or the asshole who videotapes his fuck sessions with (again) MODELS (without them knowing) and winks at the camera. how the hell could the main character just sit there and passively accept this guy's actions? oh, we're all so rich and decadent, anything goes, tee-hee--what a load of crap. if the 1st episode is a taste of things to come, i pass.

the same friend lent us the us version of "queer as folk", and even though i sometimes had to fast forward through the sex scenes (which for me got to be a little stomach-turning), it is a truly first-class dvd set, with a great picture quality, smart and funny scripts, and believable characters you eventually care about. although i think qaf did short-change the lesbian characters a bit (only one sex scene for the girls? come on!)--you can tell the series is geared towards gay guys than gals. still, it is a great show.

This is the only episode that does this. If this is what you based your opinion on for the whole series, I think you need to see a few more episodes before judging the whole series fairly. It gets better midway through once you become familiar with the characters.

Just a quick comment about the quality of the show itself..

I'm not much of a PC person myself but even I dislike the show because of how ridiculously offensive it can be as a reverse sexism vehicle.

I mean, could a guy show get away with an episode where one of the main protagonists sleeps with a woman simply out of pity because she only has one breast and lost the other one to cancer? The protesting public would be all over that... But since SATC is a woman show, its ok to have an episode with a "pity" f*ck where a girl sleeps with a guy cause he lost a testicle... Gimme a break..

My friends have long debated this subject (male and female) and we're pretty evenly split along sex lines. We did a little digging and found that this relates to the theory of "misandry" (basically, misogyny reversed). I dunno, I don't like the show and think that it just dumbs women down like Cosmo, but hey to each his own. Or hers.

like i said, i'm not making a statement about the whole series. they just really lost me on the first episodes. and judging from jasonkurtz's post it sounds like the misandry doesn't stop there.

Misandrist?

Hmmmm...well, I can safely say as a guy who takes little to no "feminist" bullshit (I have no trouble with the stuff about equalizing the sexes, etc., which I happen to think is real feminism, but the 'blame-men-for-everything-and-pretend-women-could-do-it-better school I'm definitely not a part of) that the third season didn't strike me as particularly misandrist; just that these women are fundamentally screw-ups, which is actually pretty realistic.
The show itself of course isn't, which I think makes it easier to go down. These characters all have great apartments, which could be believeable in two cases, but Carrie must have made a LOT of money on that column...and Charlotte must sell a HELL of a lot of paintings... Personally, I think the fact that this is a sitcom pretty much removes me from taking any of it remotely seriously or seeing it as political.
Some guys are assholes, in the show as in life, but most of the time it's these women shooting themselves in the foot. At least two of the characters would have had great relationships if it weren't for their personal flaws (or in Carrie's case, some willpower.) The onrunning male characters are generally pretty decent guys who get misused (with the exception of Big.)

Theta, thats sort of what I'm talking about... Remember "In the Company of Men"? Asshole guys use a nice slightly handicapped girls... Do you remember all the controversy and all the people talking about the sexist bullshit? That movie didn't even try to portray the characters in a positive light (imho) and it still caught flack.

Fast forward a couple of years, reverse the sexes, and you've got one of the most popular shows on cable.

Um, no offense, but as near as I can tell, that's not what I'm talking about at all. The guys in "In the Company of Men" are actively malicious, the women aren't (well, intentionally, anyway.) They're just not people you or I would remotely want to date. I mean, seriously, once you got to know Carrie, or Miranda, or Charlotte really well (let's not even pretend we'd be able to get to know Samantha that well), would you want to date them? I wouldn't.

So could you maybe clear this up a bit?

Oh, and you're dead right; "In the Company of Men" does not apologize for the protagonists or pretend they're decent people for a minute. It's a useful litmus test to screen out intelligent women from women who only call themsleves "feminists."

My problem with the show is that it seems the main story arc is: Will these girls get a man? And everytime (Aiden, Richard, Big) they fuck it up. Big and Richard had faults, but when Carrie lost Aiden, I just thought, "Fahlkin' hell, she's never find anyone better." If she was afraid to marry Aiden than no one will work for her. So screw her and her damn shoes.
