Anyone ever do this...

I go into the store to buy a specific movie. one i've wanted for a while, one i know will be a fine addition to my collection. a sure thing. a contemporary classic, perfect for any occasion.
then i get there, and i start to wander around in the air-conditioning and hospital lights for too long, looking at all the sale racks and something weird starts to happen.
i end up buying something else that i had never really thought of buying until that moment. or two somethings. or three. and i don't even come home with the thing i set out to get.
example: i head out with the intention of finally getting Usual Suspect SE and, for some bizarre fucking reason, i get back home with and i'm staring at copies of "The Last Boyscout" and "Firestarter" on top of my TV, and i'm backing away slowly.

i used to have such a good rack of DVDs. all perfect movies. it has now been infected with impulse buys like "No Escape", "House on Haunted Hill", "Deep Blue Sea" and "Caligula". not that they're BAD movies. well, some are bad movies, it's just that "Caligula" looks a little strange sitting between "The Caine Mutiny" and "Cape Fear."
but how can you seriously buy "American Beauty" like you told yourself you would, when you glance over on the shelf and see "American Pimp" right there next to it??

i was just wondering if anyone else had this problem. it's kind of like going taking home all nine of the ugly puppies from the animal shelter. they need a home too.

so what's the strangest impulse DVD purchase YOU made? when you went to get "Ben-Hur" and came home with "The Big Hit" instead cause it was looking up at you and whimpering with those big sad eyes...

It happens. How is No Escape, by the way? Maybe I'll pick it up tomorrow instead of Citizen Kane.

I have that problem.

I end up buying DVD's I see other people on here buying after they rant and rave about the disk.

I've also ended up with some doozies by doing the ole, "Buy 'this' and 'that' and get 'this one' free" type deals.

And speaking of Caligula. It looks kinda funny seeing it on my shelf as well, tucked neatly right in between "Bring It On" and "Can't Hardly Wait"...

Thats one thing about organizing titles alphabetically and not by genre, you can end up with some pretty interesting order to your DVD library.

OK! ok! I've done it! and I'll do it again too!

Yes, I've purchased the following while on a mission to buy something else:

Designing Woman - with Lauren Bacall and Gregory Peck, directed by Vincent Minnelli

Greenfingers - Clive Owens, Helen Miren and THE KICK ARSE David Kelly!

Wet HOT American Summer - Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Paul Rudd, Molly Shannon and a bunch of other fun people!

Legally Blonde - Reese Witherspoon. What a fun film!!!

Mr Deeds Goest to Town - Gary Cooper and Jean Arthur. I love this film. Its just good!

Not Another Teen Movie - I read about it on the forum. Read the reviews and yet I still went ahead and bought . Actually, most of the members posted how silly and fun this film was so I somewhat knew what I was gettin' into. Its a fun film. Very silly but funny.

Jeez...I thought this was normal. I did it every week. I know what you mean about some of these "lesser" films tainting the collection. I just add more acclaimed films to balance it out. I have to somehow justify owning Van Wilder (the menus seduced me).:p Just have fun!

I do the same thing Flash, I read these damn forums, and all you guys convince me to blind buy all the time!

For instance, I'm getting Reservoir Dogs, and I'm going to buy The Fog blind (for $10.00 I couldn't resist).

I'm gonna be living in a box with my DVD collection.

Yeah, I do that too. The last time I went to the store, I was looking to pick up some Kurosawa, but came home with The Black Hole and The Beastmaster.

I'm usually pretty good at restraining myself from impulse buys. Most of the time, I'm able to exercise self-control and just buy what I had intended to get on each visit to the store.

Whenever I see something completely new that I hadn't heard anything about before, I make a mental note of remembering the title name, and then search for info online when I get home..

I've done a few impulse buys when I first started collecting DVDs, and most turned out badly, as I ended up selling or trading away the discs.

I have it planned out all nice that I will go to Best Buy this week and get The Sopranos Season 3 for $67.99. Thats plenty enough to spend in one trip ... right? Then I see that they have the nerve to put Terminator 2 on sale for $16.99. I find that I have less and less restraint as time goes on.

The Fog is only ten bucks??? i'm all over that!

eric, coming home with the Black Hole and Beastmaster was cracking me up. I can relate to that. I also picked up the Black Hole for no good reason, but now i find that it makes a great double feature with another questionable title "Event Horizon" (in between Eraserhead and Exotica). they got almost the same plot, but the ghost ship in "Black Hole" with all those black metal beams and grates is creepy in my opinion. and it looked very impressive when those orange lights finally came on. good job for a kid's movie. if there was just someway to erase those floating wisecracking garbage cans from the movie....

BeanBandit, "No Escape" definitly has its moments. a great opening and a great ending. gets a little goofy in the middle though. and this is the first time i've seen Lance Henrickson as some Ghandi dude and that was just wrong. makes for a good triple feature with Lord of the Flies and Battle Royale. plus it's only like 6 bucks new at some places.

Is "No Escape" the film with Ray Liotta on a prison planet or something? That was a movie I partially saw several times back when I had premium cable, but I was never able to sit through the whole film in one sitting. It's strange, as I now see it was directed by Martin Campbell, whom I've loved his following works: Goldeneye, Mask of Zorro, and Vertical Limit.

Maybe I should give "No Escape" another look.

My problem is I always keep a list of "want to buy" movies in the back of my head. I usually don't know consciously what's on it but while browsing I'll see one that's on my mental list and I'll remember that I want it, so I'll get it. It's especially hard at Best Buy because I find their layout is so awlful, it's hard to find a movie unless it's on an end cap, or in their new release section. So when I stand there looking at the titles, every now and then one will pop out at me...so I buy it.

I have totally done this. Sometimes I'll go in with something in mind and it won't be there, but the URGE to purchase just won't go away-so I have to come up with something. I think my collection's still pretty solid in terms of quality, but now I just go ahead and PLAN to buy Teen Wolf or Can't Buy Me Love(I love both these movies). There's plenty of good stuff to balance out the bad. Besides, every so often I'll "clean out" some of the shite to sell off and buy more good stuff. Attack of the Puppet People is one I bought on impulse. So were Fathom and Modesty Blaise, but they were cheap!!
