Films that suck now

With the release of more and more catalog titles, on more than one occassion I have come across a film I loved as a pre-treen or teenager. With fond memories I sat down to watch a film again in all its widescreen, 5.1 glory (okay, maybe 2.0) only to discover "What the hell was I thinking?!" In a way, I wish I had never watched it again - that it only remained a past favorite - but, alas, I added to my list of films that I simply outgrew. Some that fit in this category were "Clash of the Titans" and "Dead Again." I have a concern that "The Fog" might wind up in this category.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

BTW, I am not interested in arguing the merits of "Clash of the Titans" or "Dead again" or any other films. The point is whether an individuals subjective views change due to the re-release of catalog titles on DVD.

there has been a few movies that i remember from my childhood that i recently purchased though they are great fun from a nostalgia point of view and still great movies they just don't hold me like they used to (which is obvious because i'm 20 years older now )... clash of the titans (that seagull in the intro ) and the dark crystal being the most obvious two. although it is a revelation to see them in their OAR after all these years

Willow - one of my absolute favorites that I had not seen in many many years..... I watched it recently and well :barf:

I can not believe I actually thought it was cool or even mildly interesting. I like cheese but this movie was just bad

I don' t think the DVD medium has anything to do with it in my case, but yes, sometimes I revisit films I once enjoyed and find that they do nothing for me anymore. Here's one of mine: Apocalypse Now, either the Redux or original flavor. I once thought it a fabulous movie, but now I find it little more than a ponderous heavy handed dose of Conrad 101.

One movie that I thought was really cool when I saw it as a teenager and am now disappointed that it hasn't aged as gracefully as my memories of it is the Last Starfighter. I loved this movie when I was a kid, but seeing it again recently, it didn't have the same appeal for me anymore.

I've had this problem with several movies:
Black Moon Rising
Labyrinth
The Black Hole

I fear this problem with a few I'm waiting for:
Dragonslayer
Monster Squad

Good thread flix.

I picked up The Black Hole recently only to wish i had never bothered.Other films that spring to mind are Willy Wonker and Tron.Like flix, I'm not wanting debate the merits (or lack thereof) of these movies nor do i wish to take anything away from those folks who dearly love these films. For me personally, they just aren't the same films i remember and revisiting them has proved to be rather painfull!

I thought it was funny when I was 8, but it just didn't hold up that well. It has some funny parts, not enough to ever watch it again though.

I really liked Morons From Outer Space when I was a teenager. I bought it a few months ago and could barely watch the whole thing. Most of the movies I've bought that I liked as a kid/teen I've still enjoyed.

I used to like Pump up The Volume when I was younger. Watched it a few years back and it was laughably horrific. The whole idea that your life is gonna turn out alright if you can just survive the hellish torture that is high school-it's lame. Don't get me wrong, I hated high school(and I enjoy lots of 80s high school movies), but geez. I also had some trouble with Labyrinth. Too bad too, because it's written by Terry Jones. It's just way too cheesy.

I loved House and House II when they first came out, but when I bought the double-disc DVD and watched them, I just didn't enjoy them like I did back in the eighties.

Tron was a movie that I loved as a kid. I really did. So, I bought it and Luckily, I was able to trade it off.

Flix,

I got "The Fog" and thought it was excellent. I had never seen it as a kid (I mean, what is so scary about some stupid fog). I saw it a couple of weeks ago and it was great. Really nice special features on the DVD also, especially the commentary and documentary. You should get it.

My film I was disillusioned by was "Clown House." When I was little it freaked me out, but I saw it again (it has been banned because the director molested one of the kids in the film), and it was disappointing. I agree with "Dark Crystal" as well!

I can't believe I used to like this. I kind of realized then how cheesy it is. Every line of dialogue sucks and is so corny. The delivery and comic timing is way off and the whole film is no more than 'high-concept' trash.

Seriously bad.

I either go 1 of 2 ways...

1) I feel all young again and giggle (Bill & Ted)

2) I feel old and the "what was I thinking" vibe (Spaceballs)

I don't really have any instances going with exactly this topic, but I have something I feel is relevant...
I missed out on a lot of the movies that were popular when I was a child. So, I'd watch them with/at the suggestion of people who love them to this day. "Willow" was like that, as were several others.
Meanwhile, I saw "Bill & Ted" for the first time recently (blind buy) and thought it was hilarious. No nostaligia value even.

Age is a funny thing and does funny things to you.

Movies you liked as a young person may not appeal to you now as you get older.
But the ones that still grab you those are the films that are timeless and are the ones to hold dear they also seem to be the ones that stand the test of time because they're well made.

I have a funny feeling that LotR just might end up the Classic that everyone says it is only time will tell

And the cruelest trick Age plays on you is when your body parts don't work like they use to, and that includes your memory.

Ah but not me I plan to live forever!

So, it seems that most people have outgrown their fantasy films. Why is that? I've seen just about all of my favorite fantasy movies in this thread (Legend, Willow, Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal). I'm 20 and love them just as much now as when I was 7 or 8 and saw them for the first time. The one fantasy film I don't enjoy now is the Neverending Story. It's not bad, just sooo boring in some parts. And the Chronicles of Narnia are slightly cheesier than I remember.

I think I mentioned these movies I bought in another thread: Predator and Big Trouble In Little China. Another one I'll probably end up trading is Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

One I rented and thankfully didn't buy is Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Man! Was that movie ever slow paced which made the entire experience dreadfully dull. Yech! I remember, as a teen, sitting in the Lougheed Cinemas (or was it the Capitol 6?) with my Dad watching this movie and being completely captivated! Then, looking over at my Dad to see his reaction to all the state of the art special effects! He had fallen asleep. How ironic.

Legend has definitely lost a little bit of luster. Close Encounters seems a little dull now. Halloween has some clunky dialogue that I don't remember being so bad. T2 seems to have lost something too. Krull---:barf:. The Sword and the Sorcerer---

Then there are movies that haven't changed at all. Like the original Star Wars trilogy--still great. The Indiana Jones trilogy--those movies get better every time I see them. Predator is still as much fun as ever. The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Weird Science--still funny as hell. The original Terminator--still superior to the sequel. Blade Runner---still my favorite of all time by far.

Poltergeist is actually better than I remember---scary for completely different reasons and I caught some humor than was lost on me as a kid.

I watched this movie a little more than a year ago for the first time since I was probably 10. Not even Tim Robbins was able to keep me from taking out the old video.

I'm also watching the TV miniseries of Stephen King's IT for the first time in about 5 years, and while it's not bad, it's just not as good as I remembered it to be. That's slightly dissapointing.

I never saw Legend as a kid, so I saw it for the first time a few months ago. I liked it quite a bit, but only the director's cut (which was never even available before this DVD if I remember correctly).

I'm kind of afraid to see The Goonies again. I haven't seen it in so many years.
The NeverEnding Story is probably the number one movie of my childhood though. I watch it and it's such a weird nostalgic trip everytime! My old video has some rough spots that (as crazy as this may sound) can bring me back just as well as a familiar scene or line of dialogue.
I should still get the DVD at some point I know. I've never seen that movie in it's OAR!

It took me awhile but I thought of some. downhuman's post rang a bell: T2. Thought it was a hoot when I saw it years ago, now I don't.

Hook: I got this from the library a few months ago and watched it for the first time in years. It was the first time I think that I didn't totally "believe" it... not in that people can fly or anything, but just the FX work... the matte paintings and the miniatures... and a lot of the general shittiness.
