Sling Blade DVD

I really liked Sling Blade and I though Billy Bob was awsome and Dwight Yoakams performance stole the show so I was going to get it this afternoon. Herein lies the problem I've only been able to find one review for the dvd and it wasn't very good. Does anyone have this in their collection and how would you rate the disc I've read one of the main problems is the lack of extras and a poor transfer? Does anyone now if there is a special edition in the works maybe containing the short film Some Folks Call It A Sling Blade the movie was based on?

Completely bare bones.

MSRP $29.95

Bent over and no kiss. Gee thanks, Paramount.

If you want the short film, you have to get it on VHS.

Actually, the short film is now available on DVD. I saw it at Best Buy the other day and was wondering what it was.

Amazon has both listed, as does DVD Empire. "Some Folks Call It A Sling Blade" was released by a company called Vanguard sometime this year, I believe, and it has a MSRP of $20, going for $15 or $16 at most places.

Yea, it's bare bones, but prices aren't at $29.95, you can get this at best Buy for $22.99, and they probably sale price it at $19.99, worth checking out if you are interested in the title.

Vanguard

I wouldn't get the "Some Folks..." disc. Vanguard is one of those houses that use VIDEO MASTERS on their discs. Look no further than the "special edition" of "Thesis", which is a fun thriller, but the transfer is crap and the subtitles are almost Image-Entertainment bad.

$22.99 is abusive for a bare bones DVD and symptomatic of Paramount's view of the format.

There is a Criterion LD

The reason this is overpriced is because it was one of the first discs that Disney released.

I have this in my collection, and am very proud to at that. Sling Blade is definitely one of my favorite movies. I did notice that Criterion did a LD of it. It has deleted scenes and a BBT commentary and everything. I naturally re-suggested it to them to have it be put on DVD, but we'll have to wait and see if any of my suggestions are actually put forth. Usually just ones that they did a LD of that badly need a new edition. But yeah, the transfer and everything is certainly nothing to gloat about. It's fair I guess, but the movie just rules. Dwight Yoakam's character (Doyle) is one of my favorites ever, right next to Tyler Durden.

Sling Blade is actually a Disney/Buena Vista release, not a Paramount film. It still is overpriced for a barebones DVD, I agree there.

Strange though, as Buena Vista just lowered their prices on a bunch of titles a week or two ago, like Crimson Tide which used to have a $30 MSRP and was lowered to $20. Best Buy had it on sale for $12, but I'm still holding out for a special edition.
