john carpenter - the coolest man alive? :)

just saw these on HTF taken from an interview he did about the fog dvd -

On studios that release pan-and-scan-only DVDs: "It makes me sick to my stomach. Look, there never has been a widescreen version of 'Once Upon a Time in the West' all the way through on laserdisc or DVD or anything, and it just makes me sick. You can't watch that thing in a pan-and-scan version; it's an atrocity."

On open-matte presentations as a compromise to pan and scan: "Well, anything is better than pan and scan -- anything. But if I had my druthers, I'd give the option. Just put an extra disc in there and give the original matted version of whatever it is -- whether it's widescreen or whatever -- and then give the idiots their pan-and-scan version."

He does indeed rock. I've just been realizing latley that he's probably my favorite genre director of the past 20 years. Sooo much good stuff. And he's a huge Howard Hawks fan too! The guy really is very cool. I could say I've enjoyed his latest efforts(I haven't though). But he's still done many many films I adore(THing, Assualt on Precinct 13, Dark Star, Big Trouble in Little China, Halloween and on and on).

carpenter's interviews are a hoot. did anyone see him on bravo's "music and the movies" show on film music? he talks about how his music is like "carpet"--you stop noticing it but all the while it supports and cushions you. next to tommy chong he's my favorite stoner!

Eww. This isn't true is it? If so,... I think the respect points he just gained at the top of this thread just got deleted.... ten-fold.

I'm not going to make any judgments about carpenter's drug use, but he does appear to be a little on the stoned side....

I like that he shoots his films in the widescreen format, and insists that they be on widescreen for DVD. Plus his music is always so creepy!

Well, he's wrong about 'Once Upon a Time in the West', there was a widescreen version on laserdisc along with a cropped version.

I agree though that the movie looks horrible cropped.

Nothing wrong with being a stoner dude!!!
Hell, Just take a look inside the Houses of Parliament

Carpenter Rocks..I absolutely love the commentaries on The thing and Big Trouble with him and Kurt
Carpenter loves his cigarettes, you can hear the lighters clicking loads of times whilst listening to the commentaries on the above.
There must have been more smoke in that studio, than if Cheech and Chong had been there.
I can't remember if I've ever seen carpenter without a cigarette whilst getting interviewed,Especially during the intoductions to his season of movies that were broadcast on Film 4 last year.

The Halloween Laserdisc commentary was superb and I can't wait to savour the Fogs commentary.

Peace

Carpenter is the man I still think he's got one or two good films in him.

And as far as his "drug use " goes its not anybody's business and who gives a flying fuck the mans body of work speaks for itself.

Now I know he's not the greatest Director out there but he's made some great films that some of these young upstarts might take a lesson from. He absolutely advanced the art of film making and is just as important as Speilbergo, George, or Francis

he is the man smokin' or not and although I love the man's ability to do nearly every job on a movie, his musical skills are minimum at best. Although he has gotten better.

Two of my favorite moments from a sci-fi fest we had at my house last year were the "magic" window and pipe from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1916) and the reaction from the crowd when the Duke's theme music came on in Escape from New York. That music is awesome, Carpenter pimps out.

Dude, Carpenter tokes? Shit, well, at least my man Lou Reed is clean and sober!

Actually the pot hypothesis explains Ghosts of Mars, I guess. *shudder* Well, whatever, the man's earned his place, he can make a stinker or two.

I can almost understand trying something once to "see how it is".... but as a "lifestyle", ... I find unhealthy addictions abhorrent.

It's not some kind of 'moral' objection, either.... (I feel the same way about regular ol' cigarettes, too),.... it's just a common sense thing to me. In terms of Pot... sure there's the 'all natural' argument.... and I don't contest that. Tobacco is (or was) natural too. But how is inhaling charred, smoky bits of any substance into your lungs natural?

Fucking up your body with drugs is no different in my mind than sitting in a chair with a hammer and pounding your various body parts.

But that's just my opinion .... it's your body/mind/life.

[/end drug rant]

ANYWAY.... he's still a fine filmmaker, and his P&S comment was très cool.

PD> A dope-fiend is not the same as a pot-head. Plus, marijuana has some medical benefits so it isn't completely unhealthy.

And was that a Reed line a joke, because he definitely was a heroin addict. Hell, there was a classic interview when he was asked, "Why do you look so young and healthy?" and Lou responded "Because I'm back on drugs."

.
You've opened yourself to a huge amount of criticism with a kind of empty and fascist statement. Drugs as defined by the governement are rather arbitrary. Is caffine not far more addicting than pot (it sure is, marijuana is hardly addictive, at least in my and other people's experience), sugar, alcohol, etc?

You also cut yourself off from about 95% of the population, who have tried drugs at some time in their lives (whether they'll admit it or not, you can try to ask your parents, but since you're still of an impressionable age, I doubt they cop to it). There is no question that "Big Trouble in Little China" and "They Live" without some enhancement. "They Live" is the ultimate hippie movie. "Dude, what if the man (i.e. republicans) was actually a race of aliens intent on brainwashing the earth with messages about how important money and material possessions are?"

And as much as you may try to distance yourself, when you listen to the musicians that were on drugs when they created your favorite stuff, you are, in effect, voluntarily and enthusiastically hanging out with them. If they were in concert you'd go, and you'd pay a pretty penny to do it.

I would like to add that McDonalds is less healthy than Marijuana, so you must hence dislike all those who eat fast food daily?

Once again Stu makes an excellent point.

In reference to "Requiem for a Dream", director Darren Aronofsky asked actor Jared Leto to give up one thing he's addicted to for the entire production of the film. Leto chose sugar. This showed him addiction is something very common, and everything can be a "drug" to someone.

Alchohol is more addictive and dangerous that marijuana. Hundreds of people aren't killed driving "under the influence" of pot.

I've smoked marijuana before. Not that I plan on doing it again, but does that change your entire view as me as a person? Of how smart I am? Of anything? If yes, it's a sad thing. I agree that smoking and drinking are indeed unhealthy, but I wouldn't not be friends, or not associate myself with a person due to their prior personal life.

hey, what happened to the John Carpenter widescreen discussion?
