Miracle Mile anyone?

Anybody here dying for a dvd of Miracle Mile to come out? I dig that movie a lot. I have gotten into arguments with people about it, and it seems like a love-it-or-hate-it proposition. I also wish Night of the Comet would show up on dvd. And Three O'Clock High.

Three O'Clock High is unquestionably amazing. A cult classic among my friends and I. So stylish and so funny. Just damn good. I think it's been slightly lost in the shuffle of other classic 80s films, but it deserves a place there.

Are you guys Tangerine Dream fans or do you just like the movies?

Seriously, when I get a DVD burner, I am going to put Miracle Mile on DVD because I like it so much. Thank God for DirecTV with TiVo and the Starz channels.

I like the movie AND I'm a TD nut. 140 concert recordings and all their albums (~50) and soundtracks.

I have miracle mile on laserdisc and the print it...ehhh, sooo, i hope someone gets off their ass and releases this...The music IS very cool in this film, but certainly not the best Tangerine Dream (that would be Risky Business)

I'm certainly a fan of tangerine dream in films, but i don't own any of their albums or anything. Both Sorceror and The Keep are better films for having TD music in them. Of course it works perfectly in Three O'Clock High and Miracle Mile!

I'd be all over it as soon as it hit. Lets hope, pray, plead, and threaten to get it out to coincide with Anchor Bay's 2003 release of The Day After on DVD.

I know I'm dying for all three of the films you mentioned Skip

Why do I feel like I did read something about a Night of the Comet DVD though? Anyone else remember that?

mbowen, I hope you did hear something about Night Of the Comet on dvd. That would be spectacular. The company that put it out is like Atlantic or something(by way of Fox Video). Hopefully the rights aren't in limbo or something. A special edition of Night of the Comet, Three O'Clock high or Miracle MIle would be a dream come true for me, but I'd settle for just OAR.

It's Pan&Scan, not OAR....

P&S? Seriously?! What, are they trying to appeal to the mass market with that one? Miracle Mile is going to appeal to a certain crowd... exactly the crowd which isn't going to buy a pice of shit pan&scan job. Everyone else never heard of or has forgotten it. Morons!

As an owner of the P&S laserdisc of Miracle Mile, I'm hanging onto it until they see fit to put out a decent widescreen transfer of this awesome, overlooked film.

Sucks. Why even bother re-releasing it on DVD?

Most people out there don't care if a film is full frame. That rarely plays a part in people's buying patterns.

Around here, sure. There are always people who boycott non OAR titles, but they are in a small minority.

MGM, which has been good in the past about releasing widescreen and 16x9 transfers, may not have the right elements to make a widescreen transfer (this isn't an MGM film).

Over on the Home Theatre Forum, there is a rumor that a widescreen remaster was done not too long ago, but it is just a rumor.

Was Miracle Mile even shot in widescreen? My first experience with the flick was the HBO VIDEO vhs. I was under the impression it was a made for cable tv movie.

Assuming it wasn't--chances are there simply might not be any widescreen elements to work with.

or the home video department is just flubbing up here.

Yes, it was released. It lasted about two weeks in theaters before being squeezed out by summer action movies (including the 3rd Indiana Jones, if memory serves). During that brief period I saw the movie three times and dragged several people out to see it.

The movie was powerful, though about 1-2 years too late. The fear of what the movie suggested had largely passed with the end of the cold war.

Interesting observation: The last shot of the movie actually had a greater impact in the theater since the print is typically scratched somewhat (even on day one of release, when I first saw it). This adds a random texture to the last shot, which appears pristine in the video release.

I don't know. I don't know if you could get to be more of a serious film buff than myself. Because of that, I'd rather see a film anyway I can, rather than not at all.

But as I said before, if you really like a film, I don't see why you wouldn't get a non-OAR version of it.

I'm probably older than a lot of you here, having lived before the cable and VHS years . Back then, you were lucky if a film showed up on commercial TV, edited and with commercials. For most films, you could only read about them.

Then on VHS, you always got non-OAR.

Later, on laser, you still got non-OAR for a lot of titles.

So, living through all that, I can not take on the "OAR or nothing" attitude. I'd rather see the film than not see it because it isn't a perfect transfer. I don't want to become one of those characters from CINEMANIACS.

Today, I still buy a lot of older titles on used VHS because I want to see them. Seeing them that way is better than not seeing them at all.

Now don't get me wrong, I think all films SHOULD be released OAR, but if they aren't, I won't avoid the title.

I already paid $100 for the OOP pan-and-scan laserdisc of Miracle Mile, so I'm not going to plunk down again for the title until they do it justice. But that's just me. It's a great movie so - yeah - if you don't have that kind of investment in it already, it's still worth it.

Regarding VHS, I rarely purchase except in rare cases where there's little to no chance of a DVD release. For example, I bought National Lampoon's Class of '86 (an obscure troupe musical comedy concert) and some local (Seattle) Almost Live comedy collections. Of course, I burned these to DVD so I'll have an archive long after the magnetic media starts to give out, protecting my investment.

I nearly did the same with The Ninth Configuration a few years back, but I was glad I waited. Fortunately, I live very close to a videostore that offers a great selection of obscure titles, so renting is usually an option. Though I generally end up buying if it's something I really like.

I have not seen the movie since I caught it on VHS around the time of its release.

What I found gripping about it was the real-time aspect of the movie. From the time Anthony Edwards gets the phone call to the end, the movie is essentially in real time.

I remember thinking when I heard that James Cameron was making Titanic, that a 3 hour movie could essentially depict the sinking of the ship in real time. I assumed that was what would happen, but, sadly, I was wrong.

Maybe real-time unflolding on screen only works in short movies like Miracle Mile.
