Am I the only one who likes the Reservoir dogs transfer?

I watched my Mr. Brown tonight, and I thought it looked great...I was worried after all the bad press, but I really didn't notice much of the color saturation, and the picture is very sharp. No complaints from me . I think this just became my new favorite dvd.

Also, one comment: BEST MAIN MENU EVER! that montage with the music is sweet

I agree, best menus ever.

The transfer: wasn't too bad. A hell of a lot better than I expected. It's certainly clean. But when you watch the trailer the colors look a lot more natural. Also, I like the keep case under the slip case. I wish more DVDs were like that, like MiB Deluxe. Unlike, Seven, Fight Club, Moulin Rogue, etc. I'd rather have a standard keep case and put the cardboard away.

After watching at least part of the movie most of the bad press seems mostly undeserved. The picture looks sharp and the whole color thing to my untrained eye is mostly unnoticable.

Damn I wanted the brown sooo bad. I just got the Pink cuz thats all they had. I also like the video. I thought it was sort of stupid of them to put the full screen version on the 2nd disc. They coulda used that room to put more extras! Like the action figure cutting off the ear

The transfer is just fine...all the bitching aside...I think its the intent of QT to make this look like a 70's caper flick...it looks a damn sight better than the previous releases...film included!

I agree, the transfer looks fine, and all the menus are beyond excellent. Not to mention to awesome special features, a lot of which I laughed a lot during

I agree. I was very suprised.

The sound is also very good. I remember my old shitty VHS, I couldnt even make out half the words. I picked up so much more badass dialogue watching this DVD.

Well this is strange because the screen shots that I've seen make the new transfer look like crap. Saturated and washed out.

I picked up the old one for $10 last night. I'm going to get Mr Brown over the weekend just for the extras.

I wish I could do my own side-by-side comparison, but I'm not set up for that.

This is the only good thread that I've read about the new release of RD.

All the other bad opinions were based off of screen-captures and such. I was a little dissappointed at first when i read the reviews, but when I saw it in person, I was more than satisfied.

Along with the great menus and entertaining extras, this makes itself one awesome DVD.

Anything can always be better, but this is great for now

I have no clue what all the complaints are about. My Transfer is excellent, It's not washed up AT ALL. I have DVDs with much worse transfers. This one is quite good!

I didn't think I was too sensitive to transfers, but this one is definitely "washed out". Look at the scene of Orange on the roof rehearsing his story. It looks like they are in heaven or something because of all the excessive brightness.

The sharpness and compression levels are fine. Somebody just cranked the brightness up a few ticks too much- that's all. You can fix it with your own TV settings, but I'd rather just watch the original DVD if I'm not watching the extras.

The brightness was a tad high, but it's still a very acceptable transfer, it was trashed way too much.

I remember when it first came out on VHS. I heard it was pretty good but a little violent. My wife is Ok with that so long as the violence isn’t over the top.

Guess what. She fell asleep. No, I'm not kidding. She thought it was boring and a little confusing.

OK, I finally broke down and bought Mr. White. I just finished watching it on my roomates Pioneer DVD player and 36" Trinitron.
I've seen some bad DVD's in my time, but I definitely do not count this as one of them. It looked nothing like the screen shots people keep showing. So if you aren't sure about this because of the complaints, rest assured that unless you're a video snob that needs everything to be reference quality you will be happy with this disc.

I didn't have any problems with the transfer, though some screen shot comparisons show a little darkness.

Overall, I am happy with this release.

I can't believe you guys are so easy to please...

Didn't you saw Artisan's first DVD? Didn't you saw a theatrical print??

Anyone who saw the first release or the UK version (and can compare it) can't be satisfied with this dark and washed out transfer.
I wouldn't usually bitch about this, but I waited too long for a "not bad"-transfer of a masterpiece like this one...

P.S.: This transfer WASN'T made with QT's final say over it. Harry Knowles asked him a couple of days ago (on the Kill Bill set) about the Dogs transfer and QT said he didn't saw any of his new DVDs yet...

I'll say this much more. I compared the picture on the back of the box with the same scene in the movie. Looks the same so if you don't think the picture on the back of the box is too washed out or dark then you'll be happy with the video because the whole movie is that same quality. Whatever you do don't go by the screen shots people have been posting or by anyone's opinion who has only seen those screen shots. The actual transfer looks much better and isn't nearly as dark.

Yeah, I counted 21 Mr. Brown's at the Suncoast I go to. Is there anything special about Mr. Brown other than being "limited". Is it any different than the others other than the cover?

I bought Mr. White and threw the cheap cardboard cover away. I'll stick to using the normal keepcase underneath. Don't know why people care so much about an obvious gimmick to sell more DVD's at the release (i.e. everyone gobbling up Mr. Brown before they stop using that piece of cardboard).

Well, there's also the booklet you get inside. I thought it was interesting that the TV ad for the DVD (shown on ESPN during the 49'ers/Giants game) said it was available in *4* covers. I got the impression that they don't want to mention Mr. Brown because people may not be able to find it.

You might have a bad connection on one of your speaker outputs. Whenever something like a gunshot comes along it might be trying to send out too much power which causes it to short out. Check all of your speaker connections to see if there might be a place where a short could occur.

Keep in mind, the hardware you use to view the movie can have a great impact on how the picture appears as well as how that hardware is calibrated.

That is why edge enhancement is such a big deal to sooo many people. Something that is VERY interesting, people tend to slam Star Wars Episode I for being literally plagued with edge enhancement and I read a post on AVS Forum where someone got to see Star Wars on a pure digital setup. I think it was aHTC (HT Computer) with some form of digital video output connected to a front projector with a digital video input (not sure of which standard or port type) and he said the video result was absolutely stunning. He also went on to say that those who do NOT have digital video connections are really missing a LOT of what DVD has to offer (in terms of video quality).

Most of the HDTVs on the market today have analog video inputs and we've been very happy with a good progressive scan DVD player/HDTV combo.

I guess those who complain about the video transfer just "expect more" since their gear tends to expose flawed DVD authoring a lot more then the gear most people tend to have.

A LOT of people have HDTVs and a fair number of people here have HDTVs (or front projectors) with progressive scan DVD players (or HTCs) connected to them, but I would speculate the vast majority of people with DVD players have them connected to non-HD displays (of some sort).

So, when people tend to complain about DVD transfers and stuff the FIRST questions you should ask are:

A) What kind of gear are they watching the DVD on?

B) Is that gear properly calibrated?

Peace.....
